1. May I …, please?
Examples:
May I use your mobile, please?
May I know your mobile number?
This one is quite informal and can be used while asking your friend about your ability to do a
thing.
Examples:
Do you think I could pass the medical entrance examination?
Do you think I could complete this assignment by tomorrow?
The above phrase can be used when you are uncertain about the other person’s reaction.
Examples:
Would it be possible for me to use your mobile for few days?
Would it be possible for me to use your sister’s dress for now?
Examples:
Would you approve of me marrying this beautiful woman?
Would you approve of me pursuing a management degree in the USA?
Giving Permission
We use can to give permission:
Examples:
You can go home now.
You can borrow my pen if you like.
Examples:
We can go out whenever we want.
Students can travel for free.

Examples:

Ana may join our club now.
May is a more formal and polite way of saying that someone has permission:
Examples:
Students may travel for free.
Parents may come tomorrow.
Could is the past tense of can. However, when asking for permission, could does not have a
past tense meaning. Could has the same meaning as may when making requests.
Examples:
Could I leave early?
Could I open the window?

PRACTICE EXERCISES 1:
DIRECTIONS: Read the paragraph below. Write 5 sentences that give information.
Clouds are made of water droplets or ice crystals that are so small
and light they are able to stay in the air. But how does the water and ice
that makes up clouds get into the sky? And why do different types of
clouds form?
The water or ice that make up clouds travels into the sky within air
as water vapor, the gas form of water. Water vapor gets into air mainly by
evaporation – some of the liquid water from the ocean, lakes, and rivers
turns into water vapor and travels in the air. When air rises in the
atmosphere it gets cooler and is under less pressure. When air cools, it’s
not able to hold all of the water vapor it once was. Air also can’t hold as
much water when air pressure drops. The vapor becomes small water
droplets or ice crystals and a cloud is formed.

EVALUATION
DIRECTIONS: Read the article on Solar System. Give 5 informative sentences from the article
The planetary system we call home is located in an outer spiral arm of the Milky Way galaxy.
Our solar system consists of our star, the Sun, and everything bound to it by gravity — the
planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, dwarf planets such as
Pluto, dozens of moons and millions of asteroids, comets and meteoroids.
Beyond our own solar system, there are more planets than stars in night sky. So far, we have
discovered thousands of planetary systems orbiting other stars in the Milky Way, with more
planets being found all the time. Most of the hundreds of billions of stars in our galaxy are
thought to have planets of their own, and the Milky Way is but one of perhaps 100 billion
galaxies in the universe.
While our planet is in some ways a mere speck in the vast cosmos, we have a lot of company out
there. It seems that we live in a universe packed with planets — a web of countless stars
accompanied by families of objects, perhaps some with life of their own.

OPINIONS
When telling someone our opinions (especially when using formal English),
there’s a certain way we do it in order to sound polite.
It’s important to know how to clearly express your thoughts in an organized way
so that no one misunderstands you (or gets offended).
I think…I believe…

I guess… According to me…
In my view…In my opinion…
In my eyes…It seems to me that…

Personally, I think…I’d like to point out that…
What I mean is… Generally, it is thought that…
Some people say that…Well, it is considered that…
It is generally accepted that…My impression is that…
It goes without saying that…I hold the view that…
I’m of the opinion that…
In my opinion, the government hasn’t done a good job of handling the healthcare
crisis.
I think we need to study more to pass the test.
I feel like we aren’t doing enough to help her.
I believe that we should depend less on technology.
In my experience, men tend to be more immature than women of the same age.
What I mean is that he isn’t a good politician and we should vote for someone
else.
If you ask me, he’s a fine actor and I enjoyed watching all the plays he was in.
EMOTIONS

effort.
