CALENDAR COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course will provide students with an introduction to statistics. Students will learn to solve
problems using computer spreadsheets. Topics include: measures of central tendency and
dispersion, probability, sampling, normal & binomial distributions, confidence intervals,
hypothesis testing and simple regression analysis. Students will be required to have basic Excel
skills.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The students will be able to:

1. Collect statistical data using appropriate sampling techniques
2. Organize statistical data and calculate measures of central tendency and variation
3. Calculate the probability of an event when they are mutually exclusive, independent and
dependent
4. Use the binomial and normal distributions to make probability estimates
5. Set up confidence intervals for population means and proportions
6. Use sample information to test statements or claims about parameters

7. Use computer spreadsheets to solve statistical problems
8. Use simple regression to determine significance of relationship between two variables.

SHARED RESPONSIBILITY

Students are expected to attend and actively participate in all classes. Our class time is Friday at
8:30 am – 11:20 am and these live sessions are compulsory. Come prepared with a print-out or
soft copy of the Blackboard chapter notes at the start of class. While in class, please turn off your
cell phone. NO recording or photography in class. Apart from teaching content, these sessions
will enable the instructor to provide assignment overviews, explain concepts and work out
problems actively with students.
Students generally choose to be in college classes, so disruptive behaviour is rare but
problematic for those who want to learn if it occurs. It will be dealt with as per the Douglas
College Student Conduct Policy.
Students who miss a class are responsible for material covered in the missed class. Office hours
are intended to assist students who have attended class and who wish additional help, not for the
transmission of missed class content.

EVALUATION

MyLab Assignments (8) 16% (2% each)

Term Exams (2) 40% (20% each)
Computer Lab Test 10%
Participation 4%
Final Exam 30%
Total 100%

Participation will be based upon attendance and contribution to class problem solving.
Note: Students must achieve a grade of at least 50% on the combined examination components
to pass the course. The final grade will be converted to a letter grade (see attached chart).
