Paraprofessional Media Technician I

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the site Principal, assist teachers in performing tutorial, clerical and technical tasks which may
include computer and library reference skills; perform a variety of clerical duties involved in the circulation, processing and
maintenance of media center materials and equipment at all school levels, and perform related work as required.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Tutor individuals or small groups of students, reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher.

Assist with daily or weekly lessons as prepared by the teacher; assist with administration of and scoring of a variety of
tests including keyboarding and accelerated reader.

Along with the classroom teacher observe and control behavior of students according to approved procedures; report
progress regarding student performance and behavior to appropriate teachers.

Provide orientation to students in the use, location and circulation of media center materials; instruct students on using the
card catalogue and computer software systems.

Assist students with the use of computers and provide technical support to teachers by being aware of content area
requirements and how computer curriculum can be utilized.

Confer, as needed, with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet student needs. In-service teachers about
computer programs available for their use and provide input as to how this can be implemented.

Assist in the development and implementation of a school plan for media center.

Perform a variety of technical and clerical duties in the media center such as the acquisition, circulation, maintenance and
distribution of library books, textbooks, periodicals and materials at an assigned school site, process new library books
and instructional materials, oversee the cataloguing of books and instructional materials.

Perform a variety of clerical duties in the Media Center such as answering telephones, requesting IMC materials, checking
books in and out, typing correspondence, cards, labels, overdue notices and a variety of other materials; maintain records
and files; monitor library budgets

Provide support to teachers by setting up work areas, displays and exhibits, operating audio-visual equipment, operating
educational training equipment and distributing and collecting paper and supplies.

Assist students by providing proper examples and general guidance.

Assure the health and safety of students by following applicable health and safety rules

Direct group activities of students as assigned.

Participate in meetings and in-service training programs as assigned.

Perform other related duties as assigned within classification

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Child guidance principles and practices

Basic subjects taught in the District elementary schools, including mathematics, grammar, spelling, language, reading,
social science, and science

Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary

Effective reading and writing communication skills

Effective oral communication skills

Record-keeping techniques

Dewey decimal system

Operations, procedures and equipment of a media center

ABILITY TO:

State law requires employees to be fingerprinted; clearance from the Department of Justice is required prior to
employment

Must provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States

Proof of freedom from active tuberculosis must be furnished prior to employment

Perform clerical duties such as typing, filing, duplicating and maintaining simple records with minimal supervision and
without significant error

Print and write legibly

Make mathematical calculations quickly and accurately

Understand and follow oral and written directions

Communicate effectively with children and adults

Understand the needs of students of a variety of ages and interests

Utilize interpersonal relations skills using tact, patience, and courtesy with students, parents and staff.

Supervise and discipline students according to approved policies and procedures

Operate and troubleshoot both a Mac and PC; MS Office Suite proficient; familiar with programs applicable for integrating
into the curriculum

Assist with the instructional and related activities of a media center

Learn the procedures, functions and limitation of assigned duties

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and one year of media center or other similar clerical
experience and demonstrated successful experience in working with youth in an organized setting. Must pass District
proficiency test.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

ENVIRONMENT:

Media Center environment subject to stand, walk, sit, kneel, squat, crawl, stoop and bend; lift, carry, push or pull up to 50
lbs.; work at computer requiring close/distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to
adjust focus and see small details; occasionally work on projects involving repetitive twisting/pressure involving wrists and
hands or arms above shoulder level; exposed to minor contagious illnesses (e.g. colds, flu).
