Despite his success and fame, Messi is known for
his humility and love for his family.

PART 4: SPEAKING
-T asks Ss to work in pairs and ask each other
about their favorite sport.
Section 1:
Talk about favorite sport
1. What’s your favorite sport?
-> Swimming is my favorite sport because
swimming helps me feel healthier and more at
ease. I am really happy about that. Besides, it
enables me to make new friends every time I go
swimming. Swimming will forever be my favorite
sport.
2. How often do you watch sports matches?
-> I never watch any sports matches because
watching sports is not really my cup of tea. As I’m
always busy with my work and study, I spare my
leisure time to pursue other interests like listening
to American music or going shopping
3. How often do you play sports?
-> Same to question 2
4. What is the most popular sport in your
country?
-> I think football is the most popular sport in
most countries around the world and Vietnam is
no exception, it’s not for nothing that it’s known
as the ‘king of all sports’ after all. The majority of
Vietnamese men, my dad included, love to watch
football in their free time and some of them even
practice playing football on the fields which is
really beneficial to their health. Besides men,
some women also show their strong interest in this
sport though it’s definitely a male-dominated
pastime.
Section 2: Debate.
“ Is winning important in sports?”
- T asks Ss to make a table with 2 columns
and write down their opinions on winning in
sports
- Then T divides class into 2 teams (for and
against team)
- Each team debates and give arguments
about the benefits and disadvantages of
winning in sports
For example:
FOR:
+ Winning does build confidence especially
when that winning represents a true
accomplishment
+ Winning teaches you to believe in yourself
when you are tired or want to give up
+ Winning motivates one to continue playing
and continue winning
+ Winning is also important in motivating
youth athletes to continue training to improve
and give them a reason to give their all when
competing.
+ Winning gains one access to rewards and
special privileges.
AGAINST:
+ Winning can only take us so far and unless
we continue to win, the only way is down
+ Losing affords us the gift of ascending the
ladder of excellence while developing
strength of character. It forces us to question
our motives and many times we return
stronger than before.
+ Losing can be a powerful motivator and
precursor to winning.
+ Losing offers us the wisdom of growth and
expansion because winning can lead to
complacency
