Research Project Title:

Tongue Twister Pronunciation Error Produced by Third Semester Balinese Students

Research Topic Overview:

This study is going to research the types of pronunciation error and factors causing pronunciation error
when the subjects read/tell a tongue twister. Pronunciation error in this study referred to error in
producing English diphthong when telling tongue twister. The research subjects of this study were
the third semester Balinese students. This study was a descriptive qualitative study because this study
aimed to describe the findings. Documentation was the technique of collecting data for this study. The
researcher used theories of English diphthong by Gerald Kelly and Yuliyanto Sabat and theories of factors
causing pronunciation error by Ladefoged. The steps of data analysis of this study were the identification,
classification, and description. The results of this study will show the types of pronunciation error that
might be substitution, insertion and omission, factors that caused pronunciation error and the suggestions
for those factors.

Research Question(s):

1. What types of error do the third semester Balinese students make in their English diphthongs production
when telling the tongue twister?
2. What are the factors that cause pronunciation error made by the third semester Balinese students?
3. How to fix pronunciation error made by the third semester Balinese students?

Theory(ies):

3. Theory of factors causing pronunciation error by Ladefoged.

Data:

The results of the data are the type of pronunciation error, the factor and the suggestion to fix the error
when the third semester Balinese students tell a tongue twister. This data will be collected by doing
qualitative study by requiring the subjects to read and record a tongue twister text and listen to their error.
Then, put the data of the spelling, correct instance, error instance, type or error and reason of the error.
Find the factor of the error by checking the data and give the suggestions to fix the pronunciation error.
Based on the explanation above, this study is a kind of descriptive qualitative study. The subjects of the
study will be the Balinese students of the third semester. They were chosen as research subjects because
they had pronunciation class and as Balinese people who live in the tourism industry make English
pronunciation important to learn.
