LOVE YOUR MOTHER (EARTH)
From “not in this lifetime” to “it’s now or never”
Sustainability at its core is the learned ability to coevolve with Mother Earth.
Sustainability has been at the forefront of global concerns for decades yet
minimal progress towards impactful improvement has been made. Global
warming caused by mass pollution has been drying up fresh water sources,
creating more frequent extreme weather events, and is disrupting food
systems. As conditions worsen and people are being directly affected, it is
crucial to develop new technology and societal systems inspired by and for
the betterment of the Earth. This new age communal mindset will result in
human reunification with Mother Earth.

Key Drivers:
❖ Feeling pressure and experiencing negative changes from global
warming and climate change
❖ Wanting to coevolve alongside nature rather than just taking from
it
❖ People negatively affected mentally and cognitively when not
connected with nature
❖ Negative effects of climate change
❖ Taking individual accountability for interactions with nature
❖ Gen Z demanding a change in policies and laws in Washington
❖ Agricultural and technological advancements creating
opportunities for more sustainable practices

MOTHER NATURE’S CALLING
From parasitical humans to symbiosis with earth
As the climate crisis prevails, people have increasingly
become more aware of the negative effects of their
actions and how their relationship with nature has
changed. Consequently, biophilia has become a
popularized concept, introduced by Edward O. Wilson
in 1984, suggesting that humans have an innate
tendency to interact and connect with nature and
others forms of life. Biophilia is being craved more in
society as we become more technologically dependent
and reliant on synthetic chemicals. We are realizing
how our systemic practices contribute to the climate
crisis and how that affects mental health. As we attend
to the mental health crisis people are realizing that
nature is arguably the best tool for improving mental
health and cognitive development. Subsequently,
people are taking personal accountability and are
inspired to foster the connection they have with earth.

phenomenons in order to foster connections with the earth?

#2 - What if more people develop new living habits that limit consumption and waste while
maintaining a circularly sustainable household?

#3 - What if reunification takes place in society as people become more educated and familiar
with the severity of the climate crisis, coupled with an increase in political stability?

NATURAL MODEL
From concrete jungle to sustainable materials
Biomimicry (the design and production of materials,
structures, and systems that are modeled on biological
entities and processes) started gaining momentum in
1997 with Jenine Benyus’ book Biomimicry: Innovation
Inspired by Nature, but has been gradually rising in
architecture. This rise stems from technological,
societal, and environmental factors. Technology plays a
huge rule in studying nature and how it works and that
has been integrated into architecture to create a more
sustainable and efficient design. People are growing more
concerned with the well-being of the Earth and in turn
coming up with ways to make buildings more
sustainable. In the past people mainly cared about
aesthetics and didn’t think twice about the Earth. Now
with biomimicry being applied to architecture and more
sustainable materials are being used, CO2 emissions are
decreasing.

NATURAL MODEL
From concrete jungle to sustainable materials
When Buildings Mimic Nature
When buildings mimic nature they are “indistinguishable
from nature.” Buildings that are true to biomimicry will use
scientific technology that replicates natural systems and the
goal for that is for humans to “coevolve” with nature. The
buildings that practice biomimicry are “focused on learning
from nature rather than only excreting elements from it.” A
couple examples include: the Pinal County Attorney's Office
in Arizona, which based it’s design off of the saguaro cacti in
the way it deflects heat from the sun, and an office building
in Harare, Zimbabwe, who established a design similar to
termite mounds. These innovations along with many others
were designed to keep the temperature moderate to reduce
the use of heating or cooling systems. Using designs or
resources from the environment offers natural solutions to
modern day problems.
Michael Pawlyn “Architecture and Design Features”
Michael Pawlyn offers new insights in regards to sustainability and biomimicry. He explains that biomimicry is
about restorative design; he says that, “human-made systems are generally extractive, linear, disconnected,
wasteful and reliant on fossil fuels, biomimicry is about creating densely interconnected, zero-waste systems that
rely on solar energy in a way that is actually restorative to the environment.” As of right now there are not very
many leisure buildings that use biomimicry but tapping into that industry could create awareness and help
individuals reconnect with Earth. DAAP3000 - Applied Trend Forecasting - Fall 2022

The Biomimicry Blueprint: Accelerating the Built Environment’s Sustainability Transformation

The built environment around us is rarely sustainable, relaxing, and healthy. Creating spaces that are connected
with biomimicry will increase the well-being of not only the built environment, but the people within it as well.
Sourcing, developing, or producing sustainable building materials will greatly decrease the amount of CO2
emissions caused by the building industry which is currently at 40% of the annual global emissions. Building our
spaces to be more efficient, renewable, and nature-oriented will reduce the waste produced and create a mutually
beneficial environment.
DAAP3000 - Applied Trend Forecasting - Fall 2022
Implications - What’s Next

#1 - What if in accordance to the US Green Building Council, you needed a biomimicry verification
to receive the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certifications?

#2 - What if the basics of biomimicry was taught in science classes and could be researched
further in college courses specializing in architecture?

#3 - What if the sourcing of sustainable materials had to be overlooked in order to validate the
practice and authenticity?

SUSTAINING OURSELVES
From conventional agriculture to sustainable new age

Previously, the agriculture industry had a more

limited perspective on sustainable farming
methods, focusing primarily on addressing soil
degradation caused by conventional agricultural
practices. Today, as problems faced by the global
food challenge (how to feed the growing
population while considering climate change,
food security, health/nutrition, etc.) such as the
rise in natural disasters, farmers have a renewed Placeholder space for image - your

more sustainable methods. This has been
recently seen in legislation through the inclusion
of the Conservation Stewardship Program in the
farm bill in 2018, which is being renewed in 2023.

In an underwater experiment off the coast of Noli, Italy, the
Nemo's Garden project is cultivating crops like basil,
strawberries, and lettuce inside plastic biospheres tended by
scuba divers. By minimizing freshwater use and eliminating
pesticide use, this self sustaining method of farming could be
very helpful in developing large-scale efforts in the future.

Biolumic’s Sustainable Rice Production

Agricultural biotech startup BioLumic
developed a rice seed treatment that reduces
water use and lowers emissions. Large-scale
implementation of their ultraviolet light seed
treatment could also help the global
population with problems like food
insecurity. Tests have shown results for 15%
increase in corn and a 12% increase in
soybean crop yields. Given the progress that
Biolumic has made, their technology could
play a large role in accommodating the
growing population.
Implications - What’s Next
#1 - What if sustainable farming practices, such as BioLumic’s rice production model, were
incentivized?

#2 - What if there was a global shift in consumption towards alternative protein sources and
plant-based diets?

#3 - What if small-scale farming operations proven to limit effects of climate change became
standard for all agricultural operations?

GREEN Z REVOLUTION
From greenwashing to an enraged movement

The Green Z Revolution was sparked from a mere desire to sell products but changed into a
genuine commitment with a purpose to constitute positive global change, strive for
self-improvement, encourage the betterment of our surroundings, and enhance relationships
with the world. This transformation sees companies transition from exploiting the issue solely
for their benefit to individuals taking a proactive stance. These individuals recognize the
potential to be the change our world desperately needs. These drivers are political, economic,
and environmental in the fact that governments are shelling out millions for a net zero future.
Gen Z is being the generation that will spark the change for our new world in the future.

GREEN Z REVOLUTION
From greenwashing to an enraged movement

Is that fork really biodegradable?

The U.S. and E.U. are implementing new rules to crack down on
greenwashing. People are tired of companies' claims of being
organic or sustainable. Being able to actually trust companies'
claims that their products are sustainable would be a huge step
for sustainable practices. “The proposed rules represent the
latest and most far-reaching attempt to address greenwashing,”
said Michael Birnbaum, a national security reporter for the
Washington Post. This could warrant the change that lawmakers
are hoping for.

Investors Call for Policy…

New policies are being implemented like reducing financial
support for fossil fuels, increasing subsidies for clean energy,
and passing green-friendly regulation to get towards a net zero
future. “We want governments to hear the message that we
want to happen,” said Olga Hancock, the co-leader of the
Net-Zero Asset Owner Alliance. Governments are getting behind
the movement for sustainability which could lead to them
funding more sustainable projects like introducing more
effective carbon pricing tools. This funding could lead to more
sustainable advancements that leads us to a net zero future.

How Gen Z around the world is reshaping
societal norms
A study done by Ernst and Young LLP surveying
5000 Gen Z members was analyzed. Gen Z is
focused on changing the future by tackling
issues they've grown up seeing like climate
change and addiction. Gen Z's eagerness for
change could spark a sustainability revolution.
Gen Z grew up quietly watching these problems
occur but are now stepping into a role of
responsibility towards the environment. “Gen Z
is laser-focused on enacting change and taking
action to achieve the future they desire for
themselves and the world around them,” said
Marcie Merriman, the cultural insights and
customer strategy leader at EY.

DAAP3000 - Applied Trend Forecasting - Fall 2022

Implications - What’s Next
#1 - What if new policies are implemented that allow for more sustainable materials to be
accessible?

#2 - What if funding for a net zero future allows corporations to find new sustainable
advancements and practices?

#3 - What if sustainable business practices were rewarded or incentivized by the government?

DAAP3000 - Applied Trend Forecasting - Fall 2022

CONCLUSION
Individuals taking action within themselves, their built environment, their food, and their community will

invent a new normal that has positive impacts on the overall health and wellness of people and Mother Earth. The

first step to establishing a sustainable mindset would be embracing biophilia and reconnecting with nature. With a

focus on biophilia, the prevalent problems that are derived from adopting unnatural chemicals and lifestyles will

begin to subside. Knowledge gained from that will uncomplicate the application of biomimicry into the built

environment and sourcing the sustainable materials needed to build a greener setting will become increasingly

easier. Once we have a greener setting we are able to focus on what we are using to fuel this revolution. The food

and energy we are putting into our bodies needs to be effective with the Earth in mind; having food that is not only

good for people but also the environment will directly prove to people what good can come from sustainability and

convince others to join in. Sustainability is a cycle that starts at the individual level and builds up to be the ultimate

green revolution.
