Jane gets up and walks off. He follows her...

JASON (CONT’D)

Nikki, Karen and Scott say there goodbyes outside the

restaurant and hug.

KAREN
OK, good luck. When are you gonna
hear back?

NIKKI
We literally just posted it so -

KAREN
Well, they’re gonna love you.
You’re brilliant.
JA

Nikki keeps watching as Karen and Scott walk away. Scott puts
his arm round Karen and she puts her head on his shoulder. As
she sees that, Nikki smiles to herself.

NIKKI
(to herself)
Y

Yeah. I am.
AM

She takes a deep breath, turns and walks off happily.

28 EXT. STREET - LATER 28

START Jane walks down the road and Jason follows.

JASON
Jane! Wait.

He catches up with her. She spins round.

JANE
You’re a real dick, you know that?

JASON

JANE
Do you know how hard it was to be

She walks off again. He follows.

JASON
Yes. I know. I was young. I’m a
better person now.

She spins round.

JANE
Of course you are. That’s the worst
part of it.

You’re a better person cos you
practiced on me!

Jason thinks.

JASON
Well, not intentionally. That's
just life.

JANE
JA

Great, well I'm glad I got to

sacrifice myself in the name of
your self-discovery. I'd hate for
it to be for nothing.

JASON
So you’d rather I was the same

JANE
Yes! Oh my God, that would be so
much better! God! I know who that
guy was gonna be. Some sad old
secretary-shagging let down. That
would be fine. I’d have dodged a
bullet.
(pointing at him)
This! This is so much worse.

JASON

JANE
Cos this is what I wanted.
And it turns out you wanted what I
wanted all along. Just not with me.

So I just wasted four years with
the beta version, ironing out the
kinks for someone else.

Jane goes and sits on a wall. Jason follows slowly and sits
down next to her and there’s some more silence.

JASON
Don’t worry. There’s plenty of
kinks to go around.

They exchange small smiles.

JANE
The most annoying thing is you’ve

SO
JASON
Yeah.

JANE
I mean what was it you even liked
about me?

Some silence...

JANE (CONT’D)
Oh God, just think of one th...

JASON
I liked your strength. I liked your
spirit. I liked your faith in
people and your laugh. I liked how
you couldn't dance but you always
danced. I liked how MMMBop was the
only Hanson song you didn't like.

And... I liked how you were

genuinely happy for other people. I

liked lots of things.

(beat)
I'm sorry you didn't know that.

Few beats.

JANE
I didn't even need that much, you
know. Just... for you to hold my
hand every now and then.

JASON
I know.

Jason puts his arm round her and she rests her head on his
shoulder. There’s a few beats.

Make sure you raise him to be a

JASON

Jason comes in through the front door and hangs up his coat.

He goes through into the living room.

Jason sits next to her on the sofa.

NIKKI
Why do you smell like booze and
cigarettes?
JA

JASON
I met my ex and we spent the
evening together.

NIKKI
(laughing)

(beat then she hugs him)
AM

I really feel sorry for people who

aren’t us. I honestly don’t know
how they get up in the morning.

Nikki goes to exit the hug, Jason pulls her back. It’s out of
character and she’s surprised but goes with it.

31 INT. KITCHEN/LIVING ROOM, NIKKI & JASON’S HOUSE - A LITTLE 31

LATER

Jason clears things up in the kitchen. As he tidies, he lifts

a few things up to look for something. Nikki is in the living
room.

JASON
(shouting to the other
