Tubay Learned His Lesson
Tubay Learned His Lesson
The whole Ifugao tribe respected Apo Aliguyon. The Apo was a wise hermit who lived
in the deep forest of Mt. Lubuagan. Though blind from birth, he could sense the feelings of
people by the way they speak. He could tell if one is a friend or enemy by his smell. He gave
the best advise to troubled people and pacified anger of warring factions. He wore no
amulets, but he lived peacefully with wild beast and poisonous insects.
Tubay wanted to meet the Apo. He wanted the Apo’s blessing to lead his tribe. He
wanted to learn few techniques from him in ruling people. He wanted to get hold of Apo’s
possessions. So Tubay hunted him in the deep forests of the mountain.
He came to a small hut that stood alone in a clearing. He entered the hut and saw an
old man seated on the ground.
“What seek you young man? I am old and blind. What can I do for you?”
“How do you survive in this place? Who hunt for you?”
The Apo pointed some baskets hanging by the ceiling.
“Those are magic baskets. They are never empty of food”
He pulled a rope to his right. “This rope leads to a brook.” He pulled a rope to his left.
“This rope lead me to the forest.” I get my water and firewood with these ropes.
“What an easy life! I would gladly gives my eyes to be in your place.”
The Apo reached for Tubay’s eyes. Suddenly everything was dark. The Apo lead him
to a place on the ground.
“Sit down young man. Enjoy the easy life you wanted.”
Tubay sat down to enjoy an easy life. He groped for the basket of food. His hands found a
ripe papaya and ate it heartily. Soon he was thirsty. He pulled the rope to the right that will
lead him to the brook. But he was in a hurry. He slipped and tumbled down and wet himself
before he could drink.
Back in the hut, Tubay was chattering with cold. He had ti build a fire to warm
himself. He pulled the rope to the left that leads to the forest. He followed the rope and felt
his way in gathering dry twigs. As he picked up the twigs, he let the rope go. Tubay was
helpless and lost. He stumbled and fell down into a thicket. The thorns bore down on his
flesh.
For the first time, Tubay felt afraid. Fear gnawed at his heart. He might die in such a
helpless situation. He moaned and cried in pain. Strong bony arms lifted him up from the
thicket. A warm blanket was draped upon his body. The Apo touched his eyes. And he was
able to see.
“Tubay, if you want to rule your people, justly, you must know what it is to be weak
and in pain. The weak and the helpless need your help. Most. No human strength is enough
to lead the people. Kabunyian blesses the strength and sustains it.
