Objectives:
The students will be able to:
a. illustrate random sampling;
b. identify random sampling technique used in research studies;
c. explain how the random sampling techniques were used in the
research studies.

Research Title:
How is your health in general? A qualitative study on
self-assessed health
Random sampling technique used:
Stratified random sampling

How was the sampling technique used?

There was a total of 40 participants in this study. They were chosen

using the stratified random sampling technique. The whole population
were divided into strata. Gender, age, socioeconomic status, and
health status was used as strata because of their supposed
relationship with self-assessed health.

The number of participants per stratum as follows:

Men – 20
Women – 20
Younger than 40 - 14
Older than 60 - 26
Low education - 19
High education - 21
No current illness - 20
Copd or back complaints - 20
Good self-assessed health - 26
Less than good self-assessed health – 14

The participants per stratum were chosen using the stratified random
sampling.

How was the sampling technique used?

A simplified clustersampling method, involving the random selection of210 children in 30

clusters of 7 children each, has been used by the Expanded Programme on Immunization to
estimate immunization coverage. This paper analyses the performance of the method in 60
actual surveys and 1500 computer simulated surveys.
