Lesson 1 : Identifying hypothesis

and conclusion in Conditional

statements
What is a conditional statement?

A conditional statement is a compound statement

of the form “if p then q” where p and q are
statements.
What is a conditional statement?

The first statement p , is called the hypothesis and

usually begins with if . While the second statement
q usually begins with then is called the
conclusion.
conditional statement form

if ,
then
Hypothesis (p) conclusion (q)
what is hypothesis?

Is a tentative assumption made in order

to draw out and test its logical or
empirical consequence.
what is conclusion?

Is a necessary consequence of one or

more propositions takes as premises.
Examples

If a number is greater than zero, then the

number is positive.
Hypothesis: The number is greater than zero.
Conclusion: The number is positive.
Examples

If the base angles of a triangle are equal,

then the triangle is isosceles.
Hypothesis: The base angles of a triangle are equal.
Conclusion: The triangle is isosceles.
Examples

If 3(n + 1) = 6, then n = 1.

Hypothesis: 3(+1) = 6
Conclusion: n = 1
Lesson 2: Transforming a
Statement into on Equivalent
If-Then Statement
YOu must...
1.Determine the appropriate hypothesis and conclusion for the
statement.
2. Express the hypothesis and the conclusion into the if-then form of a
statement.
3.Use appropriate pronouns of terms in constructing the conclusion
part of the statement.
examples.
a. Mark sleeps early and wakes up early
Solution:
a.Hypothesis: Mark sleeps early.
Conclusion: Mark will wake up early.
If-then statement: If Mark sleeps early, then he will wake up early.
examples.
b. Two congruent segments have equal lengths.
a.Hypothesis: Two segments are congruent.
Conclusion: The segments have equal length.
If-then statement: If two segments are congruent, then they have
equal lengths.
Practice!
transform to if then statement
