Background of the Study:

The impetus for this research lies in the profound impact that early caregiving and parental guidance
have on the emotional development of individuals, particularly during the crucial phase of adolescence.
Historically, the family unit has been recognized as the primary source of emotional support, playing a
pivotal role in shaping a child’s psychological and social well-being. Parents, as the primary caregivers
and emotional anchors, contribute significantly to the development of their children’s emotional
intelligence and overall personality (Alina TURCULEÈ, Cristina Tulbure Journal Plus Education, 374-378,
2014).

Throughout history, the understanding of adolescence as a distinct and formative period has evolved.
Traditionally defined as the transition between childhood and adulthood, adolescence is marked by
significant physical, emotional, and cognitive changes. Parents have historically been acknowledged as
crucial figures during this developmental stage, guiding their children through the challenges of identity
formation, emotional regulation, and social integration (Natalia Jaworska, PhD; Glenda MacQueen, MD,
PhD, 2015).

However, the emergence of orphanages and similar care institutions introduces a unique dynamic. For
adolescents residing in orphanages, the absence of direct parental care becomes a defining feature of
their formative years. The historical rise of orphanages can be linked to various societal factors, including
wars, epidemics, and economic hardships, leading to an increased number of children losing parental
care.

The contemporary landscape is characterized by a significant population of children living in orphanages

or foster care, sparking broader discussions on child welfare, family dynamics, and social support
systems. This research is motivated by the recognition that adolescents in orphanages face distinct
challenges in their emotional development due to the absence of consistent parental figures. This issue
becomes particularly relevant in a world where the number of children in orphanages continues to be
substantial.

Understanding the emotional experiences of adolescents in orphanages holds profound implications for
their well-being, mental health, and future integration into society. By undertaking this
phenomenological research, the aim is to delve into the subjective experiences of these adolescents,
exploring the emotional complexities they navigate within the orphanage environment. Ultimately, the
goal is to contribute to the development of informed strategies, support systems, and policies that can
enhance the emotional well-being of adolescents in orphanages, addressing a critical gap in our
understanding of their unique developmental challenges.
