Physical Development Learning Plans

Activity #1: Movement Match Activity
I focused on the importance of movement for one of our
events and created a learning activity that allows kids to
play actively while enhancing their gross motor and
cognitive skills.

I developed a game called the Movement Match Activity

experience. We would ask the students to draw the
measurements of their hands and feet on a large piece of
paper as a class, perhaps using construction paper that
matched the colour of their skin to encourage diversity
and inclusion. In order to make sure the kids are getting
the recommended amount of exercise, I'll subsequently
ask them to take part in a number of rounds that will test
and build their stamina.
Activity Instructions
Duration of Activity: 40 minutes

Activity Instructions:

- Children take turns moving across given construction paper with hands and feet.
- Round 1 - children move at own pace to move across the paper
- Round 2 - children move at own pace but teachers call out which body part to use (example: use right hand first to move).
- Round 3 - With educators instruction from previous round, there will be a given time period that children will have to follow (example:
move across the paper within 2 minutes).

Take Home Assignment:

- Children will be asked to design an activity at home that demonstrates physical activity. Then they are asked to perform the activity at home
with friends or members of their family. When children come to class the next day, they will be asked to share their activity with the class.
Importance of the Activity

- Important to understand children are motivated

enough to participate in activities that involve
movement
- Incorporating activities involving physical
movement enhances cognitive development in
classroom
- By letting the children use construction paper that
represent different skin tone colours it allows the
aspect of inclusion and diversity to be recognized
What to Incorporate to Enhance Activity?
To Challenge Children We Can:

- Divide the class into groups so that everyone may

compete.
- Increase the difficulties on the mat by creating obstacles
(ex. grabbing bean bags when moving along the mat).
- Asking the kids to remain in place for extended periods
of time will challenge them.
- Implement an open conversation to gather feedback
when everyone assembles at the conclusion of the
session.
Activity #2: Musical Hoops

For the second learning plan, I created an activity

that would allow children to develop physical
literacy skills and fundamental movement skills.

The children will develop physical literacy and fundamental movement skills in this lesson plan I have created. While
participating in this activity, the children will also interact with different materials in the environment, such as the
hula hoops and the music. This versatile activity can be adapted to other age groups and include various fundamental
movements. To ensure that the children get the recommended amount of exercise, we might ask them to participate
in the activity in multiple rounds. This activity will build on the first lesson plan as it enhances motor skills by adding
in the component of fundamental movement skills and coordination, which extends the learning experience and
builds on the skills learned before.
Activity Instructions
Duration of activity: 30-40 minutes

Instructions:

● The children will move around the space as the music plays, avoiding the hula hoops on the floor. Once the
educator pauses the music, the children would then have to do as instructed to race to a hula hoop. Actions such
as run, hop, skip, crawl, etc., will be said when the music stops. The child that does not get in the hula hoop has to
do a silly dance or movement exercise if they are comfortable and then join again for the next round.
● Once we are done playing, we will work together to clean up and then have circle time to discuss our thoughts on
the activity.

Take home assignment:

- Children will be asked to watch youtube videos with their parent/caregiver to find any other movement games
they find fun and interesting. They will then try this activity at home with their family and tell us how it went
through writing or drawing.
Importance of This Activity
- It is important to introduce physical activity to children in a
positive way. This allows children to develop physical
literacy and see movement as fun and exciting.
- Incorporating fun challenges such as doing a silly dances or
doing five spins to join back in the game motivates children
as they are rewarded.
- Ending the activity with circle time allows children to
express their feelings by suggesting their input and also
allows educators to modify their lesson plans to fit the
children’s preferences.
What to Incorporate to Enhance the Activity?
- Instead of having the children run around, they might jump, skip
or gallop.
- Instead of having the children balance, they might perform
different exercises, such as jumping jacks, hopping in place, etc.
- Educators might also remove hula hoops for older children to
create a challenge and help children develop creative thinking
and problem-solving skills.
- Using music from different cultures allows for the activity to be
inclusive and diverse as we incorporate the children’s identities
which may be comforting.
