Future University in Egypt Course Name: Fluid Mechanics

Faculty of Engineering and Technology Course Code: MPR 252/MEC241

Mechanical Engineering Department Instructor: Dr. Zakaria M. Marouf

Assignment (1)
1) What is meant by a fluid?
2) Define the term viscosity and show how the viscosity of a fluid varies with temperature?
3) Write the dimensional representation and the SI units for the following:
a. Density b. specific weight c. Pressure d. Dynamic viscosity
e. Kinematic viscosity f. v2/gy g. Surface tension h. v2/2g
4) If the specific weight of a gas is 12.4 N/m3, what is its specific volume in m3/kg?
5) Determine the specific weight, density, and specific gravity of a fluid that occupies volume
of 200 Liter, and weights 178 kg. Will this fluid float on the surface of an oil of specific
gravity (0.8)?
6) Determine the speed of sound in air at (a) 300 K and (b) 1000 K. Also determine the Mach
number of an aircraft moving in air at a velocity of 240 m/s for both cases?
7) A thin 40 cm x 40 cm flat plate is pulled at 1 m/s horizontally through a 3.6 mm thick oil
layer sandwiched between two plates, one stationary and the other moving at a constant
velocity of 0.3 m/s, as shown in the following figure. The dynamic viscosity of the oil is
0.027 Pa.s. Assuming the velocity in each oil layer to vary linearly, (a) plot the velocity
profile and find the location where the oil velocity is zero and (b) Determine the force that
needs to be applied on the plate to maintain this motion.

8) A 25-mm-diameter shaft is pulled through a cylindrical bearing as shown in Fig. The

lubricant that fills the 0.3 mm gap between the shaft and bearing is an oil having a kinematic
viscosity 8x10-4 m2/s of and a specific gravity of 0.91. Determine the force P required to
pull the shaft at a velocity of 3 m/s. Assume the velocity distribution in the gap is linear.

9) A 0.8 mm diameter glass tube is inserted into kerosene at 20°C. The contact angle of
kerosene with a glass surface is 26°. Determine the capillary rise of kerosene in the tube.

10) A 1.2 mm diameter tube is inserted into an unknown liquid whose density is 960 kg/m3,
and it is observed that the liquid rises 5 mm in the tube, making a contact angle of 15 o.
Determine the surface tension of the liquid.
11) What is the diameter of a spherical water drop if the inside pressure is 16 N/m 2 and the
surface tension is 0.074 N/m.
