He is 19 years old. He is slim and handsome. It is clear from Telemachus’ expression that he
does not like what is going on at his home.

Telemachus tells Mentes/Athene that suitors have descended upon his home in hopes of
marrying Queen Penelope. They are not good guests – they eat and drink too much and they
never leave. They are all waiting for Penelope to choose whom she will marry since Odysseus
is not home.
10. What sort of song did Phemius sing? How do Penelope and Telemachus react to the song?
Phemius sang a song about Greeks returning from the war at Troy.
The suitors do not like that Telemachus is gaining confidence. They want him unsure so that
it is easier for them to push him around.
