VIII Athene in Ithaca

1. Athene sails to Ithaca as Odysseus is sailing on his raft from Ogygia.

2. How does Athene look?


Athene disguises herself. She looks like a middle aged (someone in his 40-50s) traveler.

3. Where does Athene go once she arrives at Ithaca from Olympus?


Athene heads to Odysseus’ house.

4. Describe Telemachus.
He is 19 years old. He is slim and handsome. It is clear from Telemachus’ expression that he
does not like what is going on at his home.

5. How does Telemachus treat the disguised Athene?


Telemachus welcomes the stranger (Athene) and makes sure that he is given food.

6. Athene tells Telemachus that her/his name is Mentes and that he is the leader of the Taphians.

7. What does Mentes/Athene tell Telemachus about Odysseus?


Mentes/Athene tells Telemachus he/she is sorry for him and that even though Odysseus is
not home yet, he is smart and resourceful and if he is alive he will be home soon.

8. What does Telemachus tell Mentes/Athene about the situation in the palace in Ithaca?
Telemachus tells Mentes/Athene that suitors have descended upon his home in hopes of
marrying Queen Penelope. They are not good guests – they eat and drink too much and they
never leave. They are all waiting for Penelope to choose whom she will marry since Odysseus
is not home.

9. What advice does Mentes/Athene give to Telemachus?


Mentes/Athene suggests that Telemachus call an assembly and tell everyone what is
happening at his home in hopes that some on the assembly will support him and send these
suitors home. After the assembly Telemachus is to borrow a boat and go see King Nestor and
find out if there is any news of Odysseus. From there Telemachus must go to Pylos and
Sparta and see if anyone there has news about his father.

10. What sort of song did Phemius sing? How do Penelope and Telemachus react to the song?

Phemius sang a song about Greeks returning from the war at Troy.

11. How do the suitors feel about Telemachus showing confidence?

The suitors do not like that Telemachus is gaining confidence. They want him unsure so that
it is easier for them to push him around.

12. Who is Eurycleia?


Eurycleia is Telemachus’ nurse. She was also Odysseus’ nurse.
