XX The Battle with the Suitors

1. Antinous was the first to die. What happened to him?

Odysseus shot an arrow through Antinous’ neck.

2. Only Eurymachus had the courage to speak. What does he say?

Eurymachus tries to blame everything on Antinous, who is already dead.

3. Who is fighting and helping Odysseus?

Odysseus, Telemachus, Eumaeus and Phloetius are fighting together.

4. What happened to Ctesippus (the bone-thrower)?

Ctessippus was killed by Philoetius’ spear.

5. Why does Odysseus spare Phemius and Medon?

Phemius is spared for all he did was his job, sing. Medon was spared because Telemachus
said the he was innocent and only was nice to the suitors when he was forced to be.

6. What happened to the 12 disloyal servants and Melanthius?

They had to clean up the area where the suitors had been killed and moved the dead bodies
to the courtyard. Once those jobs were finished, Philoetius and Eumaeus killed them all.

7. Why does Penelope have such a difficult time believing the man before her is Odysseus?

Penelope thinks the man before her is too old to be Odysseus although he does look familiar
to her.

8. How does Odysseus feel about Penelope’s cold/careful reception towards him?

Odysseus is delighted with Penelope. He is happy that she is cautious and thoughtful.

9. How is Odysseus finally about to prove to Penelope that he is really Odysseus?

Odysseus is able to describe their bed to Penelope, which cannot be moved because it was
once a tree. This proves to Penelope that this man in front of her is Odysseus.

10. What does Odysseus tell Penelope about as they fall asleep?

Odysseus tells Penelope all about this adventures since he left her, 20 years earlier.
