XIV Eumaeus the Swineherd

1. What short of shape was Odysseus in when he woke up on the shore of Ithaca?

Odyssey woke up surrounded by the Phaecian gifts. There was a mist all around making it
impossible for him to know that he was in Ithaca.

2. Athena was disguised as a shepherd. Why?

Athena wants to see how Odysseus is doing.

3. After Athene changes back to usual form, what does she tell Odysseus?

Athena reminds Odysseus that he is clever. She tells him that without her, he would have
never made it back to Ithaca. She then shows him that he is home.

4. Athene changes Odysseus into an old beggar. Why?

In disguise, Odysseus will be able to see for himself what has been going on at his home, who
is friends are and who is enemies are.

5. Eumaeus = the faithful swineheard, a trusted Odysseus friend.

6. Why did Athene send Telemachus on the errand to Pylos/Sparta knowing that Telemachus would
learn no news of Odysseus?

Athena sent Telemachus to Pylos/Sparta so that he could have an adventure and be brave
like his father, Odysseus.

7. Describe Odysseus as an old man/beggar.

He aged 30 years, his eyes grew dim, he looked weak and skinny, in rags…

8. How does Eumaeus treat Odysseus (dressed as the old beggar)?

Eumaeus welcomes Odysseus into his modest home.

9. What is Eumaeus’ heart’s desire?


Eumaeus’ heart’s desire is to see his master, Odysseus, again.

10. What does Eumaeus tell the old beggar (Odysseus) that is going on at Odysseus’ home?

Eumaeus describes the activities of the suitors to Odysseus.

11. What are (probably) Odysseus’ observations about Eumaeus?


Odysseus is probably moved by Eumaeus’ loyalty and generosity.
