Lesson Plan in Science 6

I. Objective
At the end of the lesson, the learner will be able to:
 Describe mixtures as homogeneous and heterogeneous mixture.
S6MT-Ia-c-1

II. Subject Matter:

Topic: Mixture and their Characteristic: Homogeneous and Heterogeneous
Reference: Science Beyond Borders, MELC
Materials: PPT, video lesson, colored papers, real objects
Science Processes: Observing, Identifying, Inferring

III. Procedure:
Preliminary Activities:
1. Behavioral Check
A. Elicit
(Picture Identification)
There are 3 phases of Matter namely: Solid, Liquid, and Gas.
Determine whether the following is a solid, liquid or gas
1. 3.

2. 4.

5.

B. Engage
Ask: What is formed when two or more phases are combined together?
When you mixed coffee powder, water, and sugar, you formed a mixture. And that mixture
is called a coffee solution.
What is mixture?
What are the different types of mixture?

C. Explore
(Experimentation)
Group activity
Activity 1: Describing Mixtures
Materials: salt, water, coffee powder, hot water
D. Explain
What is Mixture?
Mixture is a material made up of two or more substances or objects which are physically
combined. These can either be a combination of solid and another solid, solid and liquid, liquid
and another liquid and etc.
 Solid and Solid Combination are mixtures that can easily be identified and separated.
Example: Hamburger, pebbles and sand, pepper and garlic, and fruits in a basket.
 Solid and Liquid Combination:
If a solid material is lighter, it will float.
Example: A boat sailing, water and ice,
If a solid material is heavier, it will sink and settle at the bottom.
Example: Milk tea, Water and stones, fruit salad, etc.
There are also solids when combined with liquid, dissolved easily, while there
are that do not.
 Liquid and Liquid:
Some liquids when mixed with another liquid will evenly distributed and form
one phase like vinegar and water, soy sauce and water, alcohol, cologne, juice
and etc.
But in a mixture of water and oil no matter how much we mixed them, the oil
will stay afloat because it is less dense that water.

Mixture is classified into two groups:

1. Uniform mixture or Homogeneous- is a mixture in which the materials are blended so well that
they cannot be separated manually.
The word “homo” comes from the Greek word that means “one” or “the same” that is
why its composition is the same throughout.
In addition, homogeneous can only be separated by a mechanical process such as heat
or using fine filters. Examples are alloy, plastic, oxygen, nitrogen, blood, wine and liquor
2. Non-uniform mixture or Heterogeneous- is non- uniform in composition.
The materials can still be identified, so they can separated manually
The word “hetero” comes from the Greek word which means “different” that is why you
can easily identify its component.
Examples of this are mixture of salad, burger, and rocks in the sand.

E. Elaborate
Identify whether the following mixture is homogeneous or heterogeneous
1. Fruit salad
2. Cup of hot coffee
3. Blood
4. Salt water
5. Pork sinigang
6. Adobo
7. Alcohol
8. Hair spray

What is mixture?
What is homogeneous mixture?
What is heterogeneous mixture?
F. Evaluate

Directions: Determine whether the following mixtures are homogeneous or heterogeneous.

1. Vinegar __________
2. Detergent __________
3. Wine __________
4. Air __________
5. Mouthwash _________
6. Concrete __________
7. Milk __________
8. Pizza __________
9. chocolate chips __________
10. beach sand __________
G. Extend

List down 5 mixtures you can found at home and identify it as homogeneous or heterogeneous
