Q1.
Autocollimation method makes use of the reversibility of light and the optical
feature of a convex lens just like the diagram below. Besides the convex lens, a
plane mirror and a light source are needed. The mirror is put perpendicular to
the main optical axis of the lens. At the opposite side of the lens, when the light
source is at the position of one of the focuses, the light passing through the
convex lens becomes parallel to the main optical axis. After the light gets
perpendicularly reflected in the mirror, the reflected light passing through the
convex lens converges at the position of the light source, which is also the
position of the focus.

In the determination of the apex angle of a prism, each wall of the prism can
be regarded as a plane mirror. Therefore, it is easy and concise to ensure the
telescope’s optical axis perpendicular to the side surface of the prism by the
autocollimation method.
