1.) How is technology a mode of revealing?

- Heidegger argues technology isn't just about creating tools, but about "un-concealing"
the world around us. It's like using a flashlight to illuminate a dark room – the
technology (flashlight) reveals what was already there but hidden (the room). So,
technology acts to discover and understand the world in new ways.
2.) In your daily experience of technology, what else is revealed to you aside from its
function?
- With my daily use of technology, I found out that one can be dependent on it.
Neglecting the capabilities of a person, we mostly rely on technology. I think there
will be a time wherein we rely entirely on it, that when a certain problem or situation
comes up, and technology fails us, we will completely abandon fixing or finding a
solution to it. We neglect the past and its contribution to the modern or the “more”
updated version of a certain technology.
3.) Why should technology be questioned?
- Technology brought advancements to our world, but it shouldn’t be accepted without
critical examination. With the piety of thought, it encourages a questioning approach
which can reveal technology’s biases and potential downsides. By asking “why” and
“how” technology shapes our world, we gain a deeper understanding not only with
ourselves but also the technology’s impact, and it may even spark innovations for the
next generation to use.
4.) How is questioning the piety of thought?
- Based on the topic, piety of thought or being obedient and submissive to one’s
thought, is something that brought everything to what we have now. It is mostly about
dedicating our lives to explore what our minds reveal through questioning. Taking
virtual reality glasses of Apple as an example. As a teenager I was fond of playing
games and watching movies, I came across the thought “what if we can watch
something in front of our eyes while we are in our beds laying down”. It is something
that we humans all encounter with our daily lives, thinking of something that is not
yet there, but is going there, someday, and sometime around soon.
5.) How does art provide a way out of enframing?
- Heidegger believes that modern technology kept us in a state of “enframing” in which
we treated nature as a resource. This hides its beauty and our relationship with it. Art
provides a way out. We find the “poetic” aspect of nature again via art, moving from
exploiting it to marveling at its majesty. In addition, art promotes “meditative
thinking” compared to only emphasizing functionality. While framing is common, art
serves as a reminder of the beauty and craftmanship found it technology itself.
Through artfully challenging technology, we may transcend mere enframing and
cultivate a more conscientious connection with the outside world.
