INTRODUCTION
This Service Bulletin is valid for installations with AL25 and AV25 engines equipped with two
valves per cylinder. It informs about countermeasures to be undertaken in case an engine has a
reduced maximum output due to increased exhaust gas temperatures.

1. POSSIBLE CAUSES FOR REDUCED ENGINE PERFORMANCE

Following please find a check-list with various items to be checked in case an engine has a reduced
output due to high exhaust gas temperatures.
– Blower and turbine side of turbocharger dirty
– Blower, turbine parts or cover ring worn
– Charge air by-passing charge air cooler
– Charge air cooler contaminated on air and/or water side
– Charge air cooler cooling water temperature too high
– Charge air temperature after cooler too high.
– Charge air pressure too low
– Suction air temperature before T/C too high
– Fresh air supply to engine insufficient
– Leaking exhaust pipe expansion bellows
– Damaged exhaust pipe insulation
– Firing pressure difference between individual cylinders too high
– Fuel injection pumps not adjusted properly
– Fuel injection pump plungers with excessive wear
– Fuel injection equipment not working properly
– Fuel oil pressure too low
– Type of fuel burned
– Fuel oil temperature inadmissibly high (>60C)
– Fuel oil filter blocked
– Valve clearance not correctly set
– Damaged exhaust valves (beginning of blow-by)
– High exhaust gas back pressure (to be measured on gas outlet casing)
– Exhaust gas thermocouples with incorrect indication (i.e. length of sensors not same)
– Effective engine power higher than indicated on board
– Excessively contaminated air and exhaust gas channels in the cylinder heads

2. ALTERATION OF THE TURBOCHARGER SPECIFICATION
Should the above mentioned check points not lead to the required engine output, an alteration of the
turbocharger specification (see table below) further improves the thermodynamic behaviour of the
engine by fitting a smaller nozzle ring.

Numberrs Turbocharger Original Specification Altered Specification

of Cylinder Type
5 VTR 250 ZB2 R345 IICH80 AW3P ZB2 R345 IICH70 AW3P
6 VTR 250 ZB4 R338 IICH66 AW3P ZB4 R338 IICH56 AW3P
8 VTR 250 ZB4 AS330 IICH86 AW3P ZB4 AS330 IICH70 AW3P
10 VTR 320 not possible
12 VTR 320 ZB4 AR434 IVCA127 AW3P ZB4 AR434 IIDA112 AW3P
16 2 x VTR 250 as 8 AL 25

Note: On 12 cylinder engines a new rotor is to be fitted as well.

Important: As the ring covering the turbine rotor blades could be worn due to corrosion, a new
cover ring (ABB part No. 57000) should be ordered together with the smaller nozzle
ring.

3. CONVERSION TO 4-VALVE TYPE CYLINDER HEAD

Should high or full load be required from an engine, it can be converted to the so-called 4-valve type
i.e. comparable with the AS25 type engine.
Beside an alteration of the turbocharger specification, a conversion includes an exchange of parts
such as cylinder heads, cylinder liners and pistons. If an engine is still equipped with mechanically
tightened connecting rods, opportunity could be taken to replaced them by hydraulically tightened
ones.
