INTRODUCTION

For a Diesel Engine running on Marine Diesel Oil, the thermal load of the fuel injection nozzles
is lower than on engines burning Heavy Fuel Oil. Since the introduction of Sulzer S 20 type
engines only oilcooled versions of fuel injection nozzles have been used.
This Service Bulletin should be kept in a separate file in the control room. The respective pages or
tables of the Service Bulletin with modifications to the Operating Manual, Maintenance Manual
or Code Book should be copied and filed in the respective Manual or Book.

1. NEW FUEL INJECTION NOZZLE FOR MDO OPERATION

For engines running only on MDO, the thermal load on the injection nozzle doesn't necessitate
cooling. It has even been experienced that uncooled nozzles have the benefit of an increased
resistance to corrosion on the nozzle head, because the temperature of an uncooled nozzle in
MDO service is in a more favourable range than the temperature of a cooled one. Therefore an
uncooled nozzle has been designed, as a closer adaptation to the different parameters between
HFO and MDO installations.
If an MDO installation using cooled nozzles shows corrosion attack on the nozzle head, it can
be solved by replacing them with uncooled nozzles.
Uncooled nozzles can be fitted without any further modification on the engine.
Attention: All cylinders of the same engine must be fitted with the same type of nozzle.
A combination of cooled and uncooled nozzles on the same engine is prohibited.

2. DESIGN AND CODE NUMBERS OF THE NOZZLES

The visible difference between a cooled and an uncooled nozzle is the absence of the two
cooling bores leading the cooling oil from the top of the nozzle to the cooling chamber in its
bottom and back; furthermore the engraved drawing number is different.
