the scene that I decided to choose was scene 2 where her mom was showing her off in the

newspaper
while they were walking down the street. we can relate this to the culture map in many different ways.
the first way we can relate this scene to the culture map is by understanding which context this culture
uses. According to the culture map Asian cultures tend to be high context communicator which is
supported by the evidence in the video. When looking at the 8 different scales the first one
communicating would the communication in this video at a high context level. The next scale is
evaluating. This cultures values achievement high which is shown by her mom showing off her
daughter’s accomplishments, however the praise is done in a non direct way to Waverly. For the next
scale persuading this culture values high context persuasion which is why the mom is holding the poster
of her child which is direct proof of the accomplishment happening. Leading is the next scale, in this
culture respect for authority figures is very important which is why Waverly is being a good kid and
following her mom around even though she hates what is going on. Decision in this video is being made
by the mom and is being followed in a top down system from Waverly, when she finally has enough of
what her mom is doing she decides to break free of that system and run off. In a low context culture,
you may not need to have the poster to prove your point of your daughter winning the championship
since people from these cultures often to not need much convincing, however in this high context
culture this is the opposite and people need that evidence as apart of their trusting scale. The
disagreeing scale is interesting for his culture as they usually will look to avoid conflict especially with
people of authority but Waverly breaks this norm. the final scale of communication is scheduling; the
concept of time varies through cultures but in this video they seem to be in a rush to show off Waverly
to as many people as possible.
