Academic Performance and it’s Correlation with the Challenges Faced among BSED

Social Studies students in the Collaborative Learning Environment

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO,2020) observed

that in today’s world, educational systems must constantly evolve in order to effectively

respond to the rapidly changing demands in the societies they serve. Students and

teachers work well in a school culture where academic success and the motivation to

learn, is expected, respect and rewarded. Such an atmosphere where students learn to

love learning for learning’s sake, results in better academic achievement.

Attending college can be a stressful time for many students. In addition, to coping with

academic pressure, some students have to deal with the stressful tasks of origin and

individuation from their family of origin while some may have to attend to numerous

work and family responsibilities. It is undeniable too that higher education wants to boast

that it offers “high quality learning and teaching”. Mission statement consistently claim

that university and colleges seek to provide excellent teaching a high-quality learning

environment.

In a world of equitable education for all, it is surprising that these students have been

relegated to aptitude peers have been transitioned into colleges education tracks and

advanced courses, these students have simply slipped into despair due to quagmire of

issues: low socioeonomic status, behavioral struggles, balancing responsibilities (balancing

coursework, extracurricular activities, school responsibilities/academic pressure, personal

life etc.), time management, struggling in grasping course material, study task (lesson

plan and other responsibilities and etc., and interactions with teachers who are either

unprepared to meet their individual needs or frustrated with their constant need for

remediation. Both academically, and effectively. Likewise, our system’s most struggling

students are open passed along without the requisite skills needed to succeed in life or
