I. GENERAL
The equipment is commonly used for preliminary subsurface investigation
as a tool to supplement more elaborate soil investigation.

The equipment can be used to assess the consistency of clayey material

and relative packing of the sandy materials. Often the Mackintosh / JKR
Probe is used for investigation of slips, soft ground of failure on existing
embankment.

Mackintosh probe which has 30° cone penetrometer while JKR probe has
60° cone penetrometer. The sets are capable probing up to 13 to 15
meters depth depending on ground condition.

II. PART DESCRIPTIONS

3
III. OPERATION

1) Equipment for the test is assembled (refer section II). The cone diameter
is measured in SI unit.

2) Apply grease to rod coupling threads for easy disassembled later.

3) Distance of 0.3 m is measured and marked on the rod, start from the tip
of the cone.

4) The equipment is set up with cone lip touch the ground surface.

5) The hammer is raised to its maximum height and released. The hammer
is the dropped freely to drive the cone into the soils.

6) The sum of the number of blows for penetration of 0.3m is recorded in

the data sheet.

7) The hammer is taken off on the last 0.3m of each rod. Connect the
existing rod with another rod via coupling and lasting insert the hammer.
The blow is continued and stopped when:

➢ The blow is more than 400 for 0.3 m penetration.

➢ The depth is reached 15 m.

8) Pull out the rods using lifting device after the penetration reached the
requirement.

9) The equipment is disassembled and cleaned before storing.

10) Maintenance

➢ For a longer life and trouble-free operation, all equipment should

be wiped and lightly greased or oiled before being stored in the
case. Particular attention should be given to threads and sliding
surfaces to ensure they are free of grit and damage.

IV. PRESENTATION OF RESULTS
The result of Mackintosh or JKR Probe are given on sheet:
X - Mackintosh Probe
Which presents
a) table giving the blow count at each depth (m)
b) A plot of depth (m) versus blow count
