700 Series 3
New fasteners for the exhaust manifold March 1997

On some engines in service, the fasteners for the

exhaust manifold have become loose. To prevent 1 2
this, a new type of setscrew has been introduced onto
all engines. The new setscrews are longer and
therefore the holes (A4) in the cylinder head have
been drilled and tapped deeper. Bosses (A1) on the
flange of the manifold have been machined to
improve the surface finish. Details of the changes are
shown below:
4
Cylinder heads: The depth of the tapped holes for
the exhaust manifold have changed from 18 mm
5 3
(0.7 in) to 19 mm (0.75 in).
Fasteners for the exhaust manifold: changed from A
two M8 studs/nuts (A2) and six M8 setscrews
(length-60 mm/2.4 in), to eight M8 'Powerlok'
setscrews (length-64 mm/2.5 in), part number
3218J302.
The threaded part of the new setscrew (A3) is
machined to a three lobe shape and should be
tightened to a torque of 18 Nm (13.0 lbf ft) 1,8 kgf m.
The threaded part of the old type setscrew (A5) is the
normal shape.
Note: If any of the fasteners for the exhaust manifold
are found to be loose, remove all of the fasteners (and
the studs) and fit the latest type of setscrew.
Caution: If the latest type of setscrews are fitted
instead of the old type of fasteners, and the bosses on
the manifold have been machined, a plain washer
(part number 0920003, 1,83 mm (0,072 in thick) must
be fitted under the head of each new setscrew. This is
to prevent contact of the new setscrew (which is
longer) with the bottom of the tapped hole in the
cylinder head. If the manifold bosses have not been
machined, it is not necessary to use the plain washer.
