700 Series 7
Change of timing case and the cover for the power October 1997
take-off (PTO)

It has been found in service that oil leakage from the cover for the power take-off (PTO) can occur after a
hydraulic pump has been fitted to the PTO drive. To correct this problem, a new timing case and PTO cover
has been introduced from engine number U-----U802891C. This change affects both 704.30 and 704.26
engines.
The new timing case and PTO cover uses five fasteners instead of four.
The torque tension for the fasteners are listed in the table below:

Fastener Quantity Torque tension

M10 nuts 2 44 Nm (32 lbf ft) 4,4 kgf m
M10 bolts 2 44 Nm (32 lbf ft) 4,4 kgf m
M8 setscrews 2 22 Nm (16 lbf ft) 2,2 kgf m
M6 setscrew 1 9 Nm (7 lbf ft) 0,9 kgf m

How to fit the new cover for the power take-off

1 Ensure that the flange of the cover and of the timing case is clean and free from oil or grease.
2 Apply sealant POWERPART Gasket Eliminator, part number 21826040, in a 2,5/3,0 mm (0.10/0.12 in) bead
to the cover. Ensure that the bead is to the outside of the holes in the cover.
3 Fit the PTO cover to the timing case and tighten the fasteners to the torque tensions shown above. Remove
any excess sealant.
Caution: After the PTO cover is fitted, do not start the engine or loosen any of the fasteners for the cover for
at least one hour to allow the sealant to dry. If the sealant is not dry, an oil leak could occur.
Note: For engines in service up to engine number U-----U802891C, an improved PTO cover, part number
3743H022, is available. This cover allows for the adverse effect of tolerances between the cover and the
bearing that can cause an oil leak from the cover. This PTO cover has the standard four fasteners (the M6
setscrew is not used) and is suitable for the earlier timing case. The PTO cover should be fitted as shown in
section 24 of the Workshop Manual.
