Abstrak
Peel off facial masks are needed to care for the skin and maintain healthy skin.
The aim of this research is to formulate a peel off mask preparation from
bengkoang starch which is made on the basis of PVA and TEA. This research uses
a formula provided by the supervisor and tests are carried out including
preparation tests, namely organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, and spreadability. The
results of organoleptic test observations were white, had a distinctive odor, semi-
solid dosage form. Homogeneity test F1, F2 and F3 are homogeneous. The pH
test of all formulas had a good pH, namely pH 5. The spreadability test results of
the three Peel-off masks did not meet the specifications for good spreadability.
Conclusion: Based on the research results, it can be concluded that yam starch
can be formulated into a peel-off gel mask.

Introduction
Jicama tubers (Pachyrrzus erosus (L.) Urb) have been used for generations in
Indonesia to protect the skin from the sun and whiten the skin. Jicama contains
86-90% water, phenol compounds, and saponins (4.5). There are 6 compounds in
jicama that are capable of having antioxidant and whitening activity, namely
daidzein, daidzin, genistin, (8.9)- furanyl-pteropcarpan-3-ol , 4-(2-(furane-2-
yl)ethyl)- 2-methyl-2,5-dihydro-furane-3-arbaldehyde and 2- butoxy-2,5-
bis(hydroxymethyl)-tetrahydrofurane- 3,4 -diol(6).
The selection of facial whitening gel products made from jicama (Pachyrhizus
erosus), based on natural herbs is due to the tendency of people to switch to the
back to nature concept, so it is hoped that with this facial whitening gel, the
public (consumers) will be able to get new product choices for their use. This
product targets markets ranging from teenage women aged 12 years and over to
adult and elderly women. Apart from that, this product can be used as an
alternative to stop dependence on using chemical-based beauty products.
Gel is a preparation that contains a lot of water and has better drug delivery
compared to ointments. The advantages of gel preparations are that they spread
easily when applied to the skin, give a cool sensation, have good absorption, do
not cause scars, and are easy to use. Gel preparations require a base in order to
obtain a preparation that has high stability and compatibility, low toxicity, and is
able to increase contact time with the skin.
Gelling agent is a polymer component that has a high molecular weight and is a
combination of several molecules and coils of polymer which will give the gel its
viscous properties. There are several common types of polymers. used to make
pharmaceutical gels, namely natural polymers consisting of gelatin, pectin, gellan
gum, Na.Alginate, xanthan gum and carrageenan, then semi-synthetic polymers
consisting of Methylcellulose (MC), Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC),
Hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC), Sodium Carboxymethyl cellulose (Na.CMC),
Hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) and synthetic polymers carbomer and
polyvinyl alcohol..
