A Christian Perspective on

First Grading
Module 1
COME
Singaporean author Jess C. Scott pointed out that “the human body is the best work of art”. Indeed, the human
body is the art that sums up the beauty that is seen in the universe. From Socrates’ “Knowing Thyself” to Pope Francis’
“Human Ecology”, the human body is seen from different perspectives throughout history and disciplines and should
always be seen into one truth: the truth that the human body must be seen with respect and dignity.
As we start the subject Body and Sexuality: A Christian Perspective on Gender Issues, Module 1
will help us understand that body and sexuality are founded on the Philosophical and Theological Traditions. It is
established from the historical developments of male and female identity from the conventional theology that has
regulated the course of social roles to the rise of feminism that challenges the impositions of these social roles. With
these objectives in mind, Module 1 of our subject Body and Sexuality: A Christian Perspective on Gender
Issues will attempt to give our foundational attitude on the human body and form us to widen our perspectives on our
body, gender, sexuality, and identity as we proceed to our upcoming sessions.
SEE
When we were in our toddler years, our parents would teach us nursery rhymes as a way for us to understand
the world around us in a level that as toddlers can fathom. The nursery rhymes like “itsy bitsy spider” taught us a day
of spider’s life, “bahay kubo” explains to us the different vegetables that can be seen at our backyard and encouraged
us to eat vegetables to have a healthy body, and “paa, tuhod, balika’t ulo” let us realize and understand our body in
an early age. Through the creative interpretations of knowledge through a song like that of a nursery rhyme, as children
we can have a grasp of the things with a creative effect that is easily stuck in our early minds.
Our understanding to the everyday things develops as we mature with the help of education and experience.
From singing of the nursery rhyme “paa, tuhod, balika’t ulo” as our source of knowledge of the human body as a
toddler, we get to discover that the human body is not only “paa, tuhod, balika’t ulo” but it has different systems and it
has an important role in society as explained by the different disciplines. As we mature enough, we tend to know that
the human body is not only a physical entity that perceives the world but the history of the different schools of thought
gave us more lens towards the human body. From “paa, tuhod, balika’t ulo”, let us discover the human body as the
best work of art.

• Body – physical part of a person that is only concerned with the material world, through which we are
able to experience the world we live in. Seeks self-gratification, mortal, and when it dies, it is truly dead.
• Mind – directed towards the heavenly realm of ideas and is immortal. It is with our minds that eternal

• Soul – driving force/animating principle of the body. That it is what it gives us our identity.

St. Thomas Aquinas
4 Laws of Aquinas
a. Eternal Law – the mind of God which humans cannot know. It contains
laws which govern the universe and control the life cycle of
everything in existence. Humans cannot fully know the Eternal Law,
they can occasionally glimpse reflections of it, through specific
scientific knowledge of aspects of the natural world.
b. Divine Law – Law of God revealed to people through the Bible which
Christians called the ‘Word of God’. Christ’s teachings convey Divine
Law to people.
c. Natural Law – a natural sense that ‘good is to be done and evil is to be
avoided’ some call it Human Nature. This directs our conscience and
if applied with reason to a situation will lead to the right outcome.
d. Human Law – everyday rules that govern our lives from the legal
system.
