DIODE CLIPPING OR LIMITING CIRCUIT

Diode Clipper (Limiter): are sometimes used to clip off portions of signal voltages above or
below certain levels.

Why Clipper circuit ?

In electronics, a clipper is a circuit designed to prevent a signal from

exceeding a predetermined reference voltage level.

A clipper does not distort the remaining part of the applied waveform.

Unbiased Series Clipper Circuit Vp Vn

Output?

Vo = Vi
Vo = Vi

Vo = 0
What is the Clip off Level with assuming Ideal diode Model ?

For Ideal diode Model VD > 0 → Vp – Vn > 0 → Vi -0 > 0

Negative Clipper Circuit
Vi > 0 ON condition Vi < 0 OFF condition

Vo = Vi Vo = 0
DIODE APPLICATIONS
Unbiased Series Clipper Circuit

Vo = Vi + 0.7
Vo = 0
What is the Clip off Level with assuming Simplified diode Model ?

VD > 0.7 Vp – Vn > 0.7 → 0 -Vi > 0.7

Vi < - 0.7 v ON condition Vi > -0.7 v OFF condition

Positive Clipper Circuit

Vi = -0.7 + Vo
Vo = Vi +0.7 Vo = 0
At Vi =-20 v → Vo =-19.3v
DIODE APPLICATIONS
Biased Series Clipper Circuit

What is the Clip off Level with assuming Simplified diode Model ?

VD > 0.7 Vp – Vn > 0.7 → Vi – (-5) > 0.7

Vi > - 4.3 v ON condition Vi < - 4.3 v OFF condition Negative Clipper Circuit

Vi = 0.7 – 5 + Vo
Vo = Vi +4.3 Vo = 0
At Vi = 10 v → Vo = 14.3v
DIODE APPLICATIONS
Biased Series Clipper Circuit

What is the Clip off Level with assuming ideal diode Model ?

VD > 0 Vp – Vn > 0 → 0 – (-3+Vi) > 0

Vi < 3 v ON condition Vi > 3 v OFF condition Negative Clipper Circuit

Vi = 3 + Vo
Vo = Vi - 3 Vo = 0
At Vi = -20 v → Vo = -23v
