Course Materials
 Book: Chemistry the Central Science by Theodore L. Brown et.al., Pearson/Global Edition; 13th, 14th or 15th edition
or any General Chemistry Book available in the Library.
 Laboratory Manual
 Laboratory videos: http://ocw.metu.edu.tr/course/view.php?id=99.
 A scientific calculator (graphing calculators are not allowed on exams)

Attendance Policies
Attendance is not mandatory. The best place for learning is the classroom. Past experience has shown that the students who attended
the classes regularly during the semester received higher grades at the end of the semester. Moreover, we may cover additional
material in the class that is not covered in the textbook. Therefore, we, as the instructors of CHEM 112 strongly encourage you to
attend the classes regularly.

Grading Policy
First Midterm 23 March 2024/10:00 a.m. 25%
Second Midterm 04 May 2024/10:00 a.m. 25%
Final Will be announced 35%
Laboratory Will be announced 15%
All sections will take common exams. Most of the exams will be over the material that is covered since the last exam. However, the
course builds on the material that has been delivered earlier. So, the concepts; calculations and techniques from earlier exams may be
required. The final exam will cover the work of the entire semester. Exams will be comprehensive and multiple-choice.

Laboratory: Chemistry lectures will be accompanied by laboratory sections during the semester. You will explore 6 laboratory
experiments (10 points each). You must receive at least 30 points over 60 in order to pass the class. If you receive less than 30 points,
you will receive FF from the CLASS.

If a student, who TOOK THIS COURSE IN THE PREVIOUS YEARS, has a lab grade that is equal to or more than 30 over 60,
then she/he is not allowed to RETAKE the lab and REPERFORM all the experiments.

Please contact our lab coordinator (asafakli@metu.edu.tr) Akif Şafaklı to validate your previous lab grade.

If you DO NOT HAVE a valid grade from the previous years, you MUST RETAKE the labs. Otherwise, you will receive NA
grade automatically.

If you receive “0” from 2 experiments, you will not be allowed to take the final exam and you will get NA grade from the class.

Please contact the lab coordinator Akif Şafaklı (O-109; asafakli@metu.edu.tr) for your all laboratory related inquiries.

Make-Up Exams: There will be only 1 make-up exam at the end of the semester covering all the chapters. If you would like to attend
to the make-up exam, please submit a copy of your medical report as soon as possible to your instructor via email.

Copyright Notice: All materials provided through participation in this course are protected by Copyright Law. These materials are
only for the use of students enrolled in this course for purposes associated with this course and may not be retained or further
disseminated.
Cheating Policy: Academic honesty is required and any violation with be dealt with according to the Middle East Technical
University Policy. You will be held to the highest standards of integrity and in the case of a misconduct, it will be taken seriously
through whole semester. In the case of a misconduct (cheating), you will automatically receive an F grade for the entire course and
will be reported to “Dean of Faculty of Engineering” or “Dean of Faculty of Arts and Sciences”.

NA Grade:
1. If you receive “0” from 2 experiments, you will not be allowed to take the final exam and you will get NA grade. Keep in mind that
a student can take maximum 2 make-ups, if he/she has a medical report.
2. If you do not take the final exam or the make-up exam for the final, you will get NA grade. The final exam is required for every
student who wants to receive credit for this course.
3. If you receive less than 5 out of 10 (50%) as your final lab grade, you will not be allowed to take the final exam and you will get
NA grade.
