ASSIGNMENT 1
1. BRICKS – it is truly rectangular in shape and
has a well-defined and sharp edge. It varies in
size, color and density. It has an extremely high
compressive strength and heat resistance,
though they can break easily when dropped.
3. CERAMICS - these are durable, fire-resistant,
and water-resistant. Other important properties
are thermal conductivity, compressive strength,
thermal expansion, elastic modulus, and thermal
resistant.
5. GLASS – the fundamental properties of the
glass that makes it suitable for building
construction applications are transparency,
strength, workability, transmittance, U value, and
recycling.
7. METAL – its typical physical properties
includes high melting points, good conductors
of electricity, good conductors of heat, high
density, malleable, and ductile.
9. WOOD – characteristics mainly include its
density, dry shrinkage coefficient elasticity,
easily modified, and strength, to name a few
and they vary with tree species and the life
forms.
2. CEMENT – it is finely pulverised and greyish
powder. The important properties of cement
are compressive strength, consistency, bulk
density, flexural strength, tensile strength, and
relative density.
4. CONCRETE – it is a mixture of crushed stone,
gravel, and sand. The important properties of
hardened concrete are strength, durability,
permeability, and volume stability.
6. GRAVEL – ISO 14688 for soil engineering grades
gravels as fine, medium, and coarse with ranges
2mm to 6.3mm to 20mm to 63mm. the bulk
density of gravel varies from 1,460 to 1,920 kg/m3
(2,460 to 3,240 lb/cu yd). Natural gravel has a high
hydraulic conductivity, sometimes reaching above
1 cm/s.
8. PLASTIC – It is lightweight, rot- and corrosion-
resistant, inexpensive and easy to mould into
various shapes and sizes. Strong and ductile,
poor conductors of heat and electricity and are
resistant to many chemicals.
10. STONE – it is durable, heavy natural building
material with a high compressive strength.
Other important properties include color, grain
size, structure and texture.
