CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Group works, in all levels of education from compulsory education to higher education, is

used as a mean of learning with the main purpose of serving as an incentive for learning. And

according to the research conducted by Lou et Al.., 1996; Gillies and Boyle, 2010, 2011, it

shows that there has been an increase in students’ cooperation in the classroom in the 20th

Century. This increase in the cooperation of the students in the classroom indicates that group

works provide positive effects for both students and teachers. Group work is given to students to

enhance and develop communication and interaction skills between individuals that was essential

in the professional world. Positive group experiences, moreover, have been shown to contribute

to student learning, retention, and overall college success (Astin, 1997; Tinto 1998; National

Survey of Students Engagement).

Group projects are simply a stage where teachers are preparing their students to reinforce

skills that are relevant to both group and individual work. It enhances ones’ ability to break

complex tasks into parts and steps, plan and manage time, refine understanding through

discussion and explanation, give and receive feedback on performance, challenge assumptions,

and develop stronger communication skills (Carnegie Mellon University). At present, there is

strong scientific support for the benefits of students learning and working in groups. Group work

forms an important part of your time at university. You will often be asked to work in a group

with people you don’t know. Thus, the central goal of cooperative learning in science education

is to improve performance.

The benefits of cooperative and collaborative learning: Students come to recognize,

understand, and respect cultural differences and different perspective, Performance is improved,

and Group work helps students who have difficulty with social skills. Group participation and

technically wanted to have enough and better academic accomplishments for them to probably

help each other to go through to another level to achieve each other target goals. On the other

hand, both group work and organization participation were events that exchange ideas and

insights with each other, As a result, it benefits them to have enlightenment with the given topic

or activities.

As stated, there are a lot of impacts and benefits in group projects. This study aims to

know what effects grade 11 students at STI College Balayan achieve in group projects. Do the

students get benefits, and what benefits do they gain in group activities Does this impact the

schoolwork that they are conducting positively?. And in group projects do students understand

and get the main purpose of the group works that are being accomplished?. Through this, we will

be knowledgeable on how senior high school grade 11 students at STI College Balayan are

impacted and benefited from group projects.

Statement of the Problem

STI College Balayan, like any other school, uses group projects as another means of learning for its

Grade 11 Senior High School Students, such an approach gives students a specific impact and benefits

that affect their academic performance and personal skills. Although students are using this means of

learning to accomplish their academic success, there is a growing body of research that addresses the

positive effects of group work on students. Furthermore, this means of learning enhances and develops

communication and interaction skills that was essential in the professional world.
Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this qualitative study is to understand and to know about the impact and

major benefits of group projects for grade 11 senior high school students at STI College Balayan.

Second purpose is to understand the importance and benefits of cooperative, cooperation and

collaborative learning to all grade 11 students and the advantages and disadvantages of group

work and cooperation.

Research Questions

Four Research questions that guided this study:

1. What are the impact of group projects in grade 11 students at STI Balayan?

2. Why is group project necessary for grade 11 students?

3. What benefits do grade 11 students gain in group projects?

4. How grade 11 students understand and get the main purpose of the group works that are being

accomplished?

Assumptions of the Study

Group works gives experiences which are monitored and selected in beneficial way. Group gives

experience and a sense of belonging of growing together to the members. Group provides

changes which are more paramount and can be obtained more quickly. Groups also helps in the

removal of difficulties created by exposure to previous learning. Groups are used as instruments
which are/economical in use, in place of scarce resources, groups can examine behaviour and the

general pattern of group behaviour. Group can help students develop a host of skills that are

increasingly important in the professional world. Positive group experiences, moreover, have

been shown to contribute to student learning, retention and overall college success. Students

engaged in group work, or cooperative learning, show increase individual achievement compared

to the students working alone. Students group work enhances communication and other

professional development skills

Summary

All students experience group projects and this can develop and improve their socialization, how

they interact and cooperate with different kinds of people, and know different perspectives from

other people by this study we could know about the impacts and benefits of group projects to

grade 11 SHS students at STI College Balayan.

In this chapter, the research study of the benefits, and impacts of group projects were presented.

The samples of benefits and impact on students were introduced and had given a graphic

representation. Four research questions that guided this study were listed and assumptions of the

study were presented.
