B. Essay. Discuss the following:

1. Describe Utilitarianism. How does utilitarianism influence our day-to-day
decision-making?
Utilitarianism is an ethical theory that bases an action's moral worth on the amount of happiness or
pleasure it brings to many individuals or sentient beings impacted by it. This means that an action is
morally good if it maximizes overall happiness, and morally bad if it fails to do so.
In day-to-day decision-making, utilitarianism can influence individuals in a variety of ways. Because it
encourages us to consider how our actions affect others ̶ utilitarianism suggests that individuals should not
only consider their own happiness but also the happiness of others. It also allows us to weigh the
consequences of our actions ̶ since utilitarianism suggests that all actions should be measured based on
their ability to maximize happiness, it enables us to carefully consider the consequences of our choices on
both ourselves and the people around us. Lastly, It helps us prioritize the greater good over our individual
interests: utilitarianism makes us reflect on what is best for the community as a whole, rather than
ourselves.

2. Do you agree with Socrates that an unexamined life is not worth living? Why
or why not?
Socrates, one of the greatest philosophers in history, once said that "an unexamined life is not worth
living." If you were to ask me, I would agree. This powerful statement implies that living without
reflection is no better than not living at all. It emphasizes the importance of introspection and self-
discovery for personal growth and a fulfilled life.
Living an unexamined life means living a life without purpose. It means going through the motions and
allowing life to pass you by. Without introspection, you become disconnected from your inner self, and
you lose track of what truly matters in life. You may find yourself struggling to make sense of your
experiences and feeling unfulfilled despite having everything you thought you wanted. Individuals who
don't examine their lives are living in ignorance without having the opportunity to realize their true
potential. The examined life, according to Socrates, allows us to identify and rectify our mistakes, as well
as choose the path that leads to our desired future.
In conclusion, Socrates' saying that an unexamined life is not worth living is a powerful reminder that
personal growth and self-discovery are essential for a fulfilling life. By embracing self-reflection and
introspection, you can gain a deeper understanding of yourself, align your actions with your values, and
live a life of purpose and meaning.

ACCOUNTABILITY
“Accountability breeds response-ability.” - Stephen R. Covey

The quote "Accountability breeds response-ability" is from Stephen Covey's book "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective
People". This phrase somehow made an impression on me. You might be wondering why. Allow me to explain.

Imagine that you are the owner of a garden. You have carefully planted vibrant flowers and lush greenery and
dedicate your time and energy to making sure they grow strong and healthy. However, one day you notice that some
of your flowers are wilting, and your grass is turning brown. At this point, you have a decision to make ̶ you can
choose to blame external factors such as the weather, or you can take accountability for the state of your garden and
find a solution.

If you choose to take accountability, this decision will breed response-ability within you. You will feel empowered
to act and find a solution to the problem. You may decide to water your garden more frequently, add fertilizer, or
seek advice from a gardening expert. By taking accountability for the state of your garden, you have opened yourself
up to the potential for growth and change.

The same can be said for our lives. When we hold ourselves accountable for our actions and take responsibility for
our mistakes, we become empowered to take action and find solutions to our problems. This breeds response-ability ̶
the ability to respond to challenges and learn from our mistakes, ultimately leading to personal growth and
development. By cultivating a culture of accountability, we can create an environment of empowerment and
promote positive change in ourselves and those around us.

The same goes to business. In a business context, accountability is vital to maintaining a healthy and productive
work environment. When individuals are held accountable for their work, they are more likely to put in the effort to
ensure that their work is of high quality. Additionally, they are more likely to take ownership of their mistakes and
work to correct them, rather than passing the blame onto someone else.

Accountability is a powerful tool that has the potential to create a sense of responsibility in individuals. When
individuals know that they are being held accountable for their actions, it compels them to take ownership of their
work and develop response-ability.

Therefore, accountability breeds response-ability. It is a self-reinforcing cycle that drives improvement and
excellence in everything we do. By making accountability a core value of your business, you can unlock the full
potential of your team and build a culture of success that benefits everyone involved. Response-ability is the ability
to respond and act when faced with challenges and obstacles.
