Governor-General Emilio Terrero ay sadya naming naimpluwensyahan sa mensahe ng "Noli Me

Tangere". He ordered an investigation into the estates owned by the friars in the Philippines. The
purpose of the investigation was to address any unfairness or injustices related to land taxes and the
treatment of tenants.

Kaya noong December 30, 1887, the Civil Governor of Laguna Province directed the municipal
authorities of Calamba to investigate the agrarian conditions of their locality. One of the estates affected
by this investigation was the Calamba hacienda, which had been owned by the Dominican Order since
1883.

To further emphazise, ano nga aba ang Domican Order?

Dominican Order has a significant historical presence. They were among the first groups of friars to
arrive in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial period. The Dominicans played a crucial role in the
evangelization and colonization, establishing, schools, and churches. By the 1850s, the Dominicans had
half a million followers in the Philippines Additionally, the Dominican friars were among the landowners
in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era.

Noon ngang late 18th century si Domingo Lam-co, Rizal’s, natatandaan kung sino sya? Sya ang.. Chinese
great grandfather Nang nagpaconvert si Domingo Lamco to the Christian faith, he was befriended by
the Dominicans. Tinulungan nya ang mga Dominicans na gumawa ng irrigation sa Binan.

Yung tatay naman ni Rizal na si Don Francisco ay naging primary tenant in the Calamba estate owned by
the Dominican friars. He then leased the land he rented to other tenants who did most of the farming.
Dahil nga sa farmlands na ito na cover yung expenses as a student at the Ateneo, the University of
Santo Tomas and later his studies and his travels across Europe and other countries.

Balik tayo sa kwento, upon hearing the investigation, yung mga mamayan ng Calamba ay humingi ng
tulong kay Rizal to gather facts so that the government might institute certain agrarian reforms.

After a thorough study of the conditions in Calamba, Rizal wrote down his findings which the tenants
and three of the officials of the hacienda signed on January 8, 1888. These findings, which were formally
submitted to the government for action, were the following:

Rizal’s exposure to the deplorable condition angered the friars.

The friars exerted pressure to Malacañang to eliminate Rizal.

They asked Gov. Gen. Terrero to deport Rizal but the latter refused for there is lack of charges against
Rizal in court
