2.0 PROBLEM STATEMENT

Vietnam was chosen as our target country because it is one of the 20 countries with the
most plastic waste in the world. Insufficient waste management infrastructure and practices
have resulted in major environmental problems, public health hazards, and shortages of
recycling infrastructure in Vietnam. As evidenced, around 85% of waste generated in Vietnam
is buried without treatment in landfill sites, posing significant environmental risks, and this shows
that they are dealing with serious environmental challenges, including food waste management
and plastic pollution. (Cece Nguyen and Thu Nguyen, 2022) Although grassroots efforts and
social franchises are trying to reduce plastic pollution in Vietnam, these projects face obstacles
such as mountains of rubbish and a lack of a formal waste sorting and recycling system.

According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) research in

2020, solid waste, sewage, and exhaust gas have not been completely handled, generating
harmful environmental impacts by polluting the air, water, and soil, the environment, and
greenhouse gas emissions. Other than that, many recycling craft villages generate a large
amount of solid waste, such as paper, plastic, and metal. Then, this material was not collected or
processed, and it was discharged into open areas, ponds, and lakes, clogged drainage systems,
and caused badly polluted surfaces and underground water. (Nguyen Khanh Bui, Thanh Ly
Nguyen, Khanh Duong Phan and Anh Thu Nguyen, 2020)

In addition, based on a case study in Da Nang City, increased food waste has major
negative consequences for Vietnam. (Kikuko Shoyama, Rajarshi Dasgupta, and Ronald C.
Estoque, 2021) Basically, the impacts are likely similar to those from improper management of
solid waste, which are environmental sustainability, water and land resource pollution, and
greenhouse gas emissions. The things that have a different impact on Vietnam that were caused
by food waste are disease transmissions, food security, and climate change. This case study
on food waste in Da Nang City, Vietnam, demonstrates that food waste is increasing at the
consumption level in urban areas, much more so than in developed countries. This aligns with
our objective of taking the first steps by promoting this product in urban areas.

Moving on to the next point, a larger percentage of waste produced in Vietnam is not
collected, treated, or disposed of in a controlled manner due to insufficient recycling infrastructure.
Based on the research made by Nguyen Khanh Bui, most of the recycling facilities are small
in scale, have low levels of technology investment, are outdated, and have outmoded
machinery and equipment. The installation of advanced waste treatment facilities and sanitary

4
domestic solid waste landfills requires significant investment resources, which many localities
lack. (Nguyen Khanh Bui, Thanh Ly Nguyen, Khanh Duong Phan and Anh Thu Nguyen, 2020)
Thus, infrastructure, equipment, and specific collecting facilities for each type of waste are not yet
enough, resulting in inefficient waste separation at the source. Meanwhile, many foreign solid
waste treatment technologies are incompatible with the characteristics of Vietnamese domestic
solid waste.

3.0 OBJECTIVES

Objectives are an essential element of any product development, and the Smart Waste
Sorting Bin is no exception. Objectives provide a clear direction and purpose to the development
team, guiding them towards a shared objective. Without objectives, product development can
become disordered and lack focus, leading to inefficiency and confusion among the team
members. Additionally, objectives help to allocate resources effectively, ensuring that the most
important aspects of the product are invested in.

One of the primary objectives of the Smart Waste Sorting Bin in Vietnam is to promote
waste sorting and awareness. It highlights how objectives serve as a means to raise public
awareness and understanding by incorporating educational content into the user interface and
promoting proper waste sorting practices. This can have a significant impact on recycling culture
and behaviours, not only contributing to environmental sustainability, but also empowering
individuals to become better stewards of their communities.

Next, delves into the ideal of easing accessible waste sorting. An essential aspect of the
Smart Waste Sorting Bin is its stoner- benevolence. icing that the bin is easy to use, whether in
homes or public spaces, is vital. A stoner-friendly design removes walls to effective waste sorting
and encourages further people to borrow proper disposal practices. This ideal is aimed at making
the process of waste isolation accessible and accessible for everyone, promoting a more
sustainable and eco-friendly life.

Through timely cautions and effective waste collection, the Smart Waste Sorting Bin helps
littering and maintain cleaner surroundings. This objective emphasises the direct impact the

4.0 NOVELTY

According to an Apex International article, novelty is defined as a minor change to an

existing product that was intended to assist suppliers or industry players in distinguishing their
goods from the competition. As a result, two elements have been developed to accommodate the
novelty of this innovation. Our Smart Waste Sorting Bin is a game changer that captures the
essence of novelty. This innovation fundamentally transforms the waste disposal landscape by
incorporating a revolutionary sorting and sensor system. In addition, this Smart Waste Sorting Bin
provides personalised waste solutions based on household preferences and needs, in addition to
convenience. It represents the aspirations of a greener and cleaner future and acts as a catalyst
for sustainability. We will go into more detail about these two core elements—the sorting and
sensor system mechanism and the personalised waste solutions.

The sorting and sensor system mechanism of our Smart Waste Sorting Bin represents
the pinnacle of waste management innovation. It employs a combination of cutting-edge
technologies to identify and segregate various types of waste with remarkable precision. This
system can distinguish between different materials and organic waste thanks to the complex
algorithms it uses, going beyond simple visual identification. Our innovation is unique not only
because of its amazing potential but also because of the inspiration that brought us to this point.
We were inspired by a breakthrough mentioned in the InnovationOrigins article, in which an AI-
powered sensor system was introduced that differentiates waste streams in industrial bins,
monitoring recycling rates and waste quantities (AI Sensor Makes Your Bin Smart and Helps You
Sort Waste, 2023). While this technology was initially aimed at industrial companies, our vision
was to adopt the same concept and mechanism and scale it down to a smaller scale, making
it available for household use as a necessary component of everyday household appliances.

Apart from that, this Smart Waste Bin is more than just a container—rather, it's a
personalised waste management system that adjusts to the distinctive needs of families
and communities. This breakthrough provides an additional degree of customization by
employing the capabilities of compartmentalization and monitoring. Not only does the monitoring
feature track how much waste is produced, but it also learns specific waste patterns over time.
The Smart Waste Sorting Bin gathers data through the mechanism used to sort various waste
kinds, offering observations that go beyond conventional waste management. This information is
essential for customising waste management strategies and making recommendations that

7
maximise recycling, cut down on waste, and lessen the impact on the environment. Users now
can take charge of their environmental impact thanks to advancements in waste management.

8
5.0 USEFULNESS

Product innovation is the development and distribution of new or existing products and
services to improve and stay competitive in the industry. It can increase revenues, and customer
satisfaction, and gain a competitive advantage. Innovative technologies, such as smart bins like
Garby, are leading the way in addressing environmental concerns and promoting sustainability.
Smart waste sorting bins aim to provide consumers with a new perspective on waste
management, as traditional methods are often seen as ineffective. These bins address issues like
overflowing containers, irregular collection schedules, and high fuel usage, providing a new
perspective on waste management. By focusing on the impact of these bins on consumers and
waste management, these innovations can revolutionise the industry and provide a more efficient
and sustainable solution for waste management.

The Smart Waste Sorting Bin is a smart waste bin designed to improve recycling rates,
efficiently collect waste, and reduce waste in landfills. In Vietnam, with an average recycling rate
of 33% for four primary resins, the volume of plastics recycled is minimal compared to economic
inputs. A World Bank Group research in 2021 estimates that 75% of Vietnam's recyclable plastic
material value, estimated to be US$2.2 to 2.9 billion annually, is wasted due to uncollected
plastics. The bin uses Artificial Intelligence technology, robotics, and machine vision to classify
waste types like plastics, metal cans, and glasses. It can identify types of plastics using various
sensors to detect weight, substance, and materials. The bin also simplifies recycling for
households by offering specific sections for recyclables, organic waste, and general waste, and
utilising automated methods. This innovation contributes to reducing contamination in recycling
streams and producing higher-quality recyclable materials that recycling facilities are more likely
to accept.

The Smart Waste Sorting Bin is an innovative waste management system that optimises
the waste collection efficiency and rubbish collection routes and schedules using sensors and
data analysis. Its real-time monitoring of bin fill levels helps prevent overflowing bins and sends
alerts to residents when they are full, preventing unsightly, uneasy smells, and pests from entering
homes. This system also makes neighbourhoods cleaner, improving the standard of living for
locals by streamlining recycling and waste collection operations. Internet of Things (IoT) waste
management technologies allow households to plan more efficient routes for garbage trucks,

9
assessing the need to empty trash bins through internet connectivity. This flexible waste
management approach benefits residents, businesses, and organisations, particularly
households and residents. The Smart Waste Sorting Bin automatically separates waste into
streams, saving time and effort by eliminating the need for physical segregation. It also reduces
the number of trips waste collection trucks need to make, saving fuel and reducing emissions.

The Smart Waste Sorting Bin is an innovative educational tool designed to educate
household members, including children, about waste reduction, waste management, and
recycling. It teaches different types of waste and correct sorting techniques, fostering sustainable
lifestyles and environmental responsibility. Users can learn about proper waste disposal through
interfaces or mobile apps, encouraging good garbage disposal practices. They can also learn
about basic recycling requirements and receive feedback or rewards for their waste management
habits. The bin may also feature displays or other elements that raise public awareness about
recycling and garbage management procedures, raising household and public awareness of the
importance of waste reduction and recycling rates. Overall, the Smart Waste Sorting Bin aims to
promote sustainable practices and environmental responsibility.

The Smart Waste Sorting Bin is a market innovation that aims to reduce landfill waste
by diverting recyclables and organic waste from landfills. The landfill gas, which consists of 50%
CO2 and 50% methane, with trace amounts of nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, and non-methane
organic compounds (NMOCs) such as sulphides and ammonia, produces methane when organic
waste decomposes. This innovation simplifies recycling and composting, diverting waste away
from landfills and reducing methane emissions. This not only benefits the environment but also
the economy, as compost enriches soil, reduces waste, and supports healthy plant growth,
contributing to environmental sustainability.

10
6.0 FEATURES

6.1 Compartmentalization

The essential component of Smart Waste Bin design that makes efficient garbage
management and sorting possible is compartmentalization. The compartments or
chambers in these bins are segregated and assigned to distinct categories of waste,
including recyclables, non-recyclables, and organic waste. Facilitating accurate trash
sorting and separation at the source is the main goal of compartmentalization. The
compartmentalization mechanism of the bin makes sure that, depending on the type of
trash disposed of, it is disposed of in the right section. For instance, general waste goes
in the non-recyclables division, whereas plastics, paper, glass, and metals belong in the
recyclables section and organic waste like fruit and vegetable peels, coffee grounds and
eggshells is directed to its specific section. The section of organic waste will turn it to
compost. Decomposing organic materials like kitchen scraps and household waste
produces compost that is a valuable organic substance. It is high in nutrients and serves
as an excellent soil conditioner.

Recycling can be streamlined and cross-contamination is prevented by

compartmentalization. It increases the effectiveness of recycling facilities and decreases
the need for extra sorting by improving the efficiency of garbage collection and processing.
This function helps waste management organisations by streamlining the processing of
garbage. Also, it promotes recycling and appropriate disposal of waste among users,
which in turn promotes environmentally conscious behaviour. It is an essential part of
Smart Waste Bins that help to create a more sustainable and cleaner environment.

6.2 Artificial Intelligence

The functionality of Smart Waste Bin is greatly influenced by Artificial Intelligence

(AI), which is revolutionising sustainability and waste management techniques. Additional
features on these bins combine to automate and improve the garbage disposal process.
AI-powered Smart Waste Bin are able to distinguish between recyclables and non-
recyclables, as well as organic waste while disposing of rubbish. Real-time data is
captured by the cameras and sensors, and machine learning algorithms process it
immediately. By effectively classifying waste materials, this technology ensures that non-
recyclables are disposed of properly and recyclables don't end up in landfills. The AI

11
system directs a sorting mechanism to place rubbish in the proper compartment when a
user disposes of it. Moreover, AI in Smart Waste Bin is a huge advancement for
contemporary waste management and environmentally friendly initiatives.

6.3 User Interface

A Smart Waste Bin's user interface plays a crucial role in enhancing user
interaction, functionality, and overall experience. It acts as a conduit for communication
between the advanced technology of the waste bin and the people who are using it to get
rid of their waste. This interface takes the form of a specialised mobile app and a
touchscreen on the bin itself. Users can quickly obtain information about the bin's fill levels
through the user interface, making sure they are aware of the space that is available for
disposal. In addition, it offers instructional materials that guide users through appropriate
trash management and recycling procedures, encouraging environmentally conscious
behaviour. Users can also learn how to use the compost that is produced by the organic
waste using the interface, as there are many benefits of utilising compost for plants.
Additionally, users can report problems or instances of contamination, facilitating rapid
maintenance and troubleshooting.

This interface is frequently used to provide notifications regarding recycling events

and waste pickup schedules. It can also use incentives like gamification and rewards to
encourage recycling and proper waste disposal. The user interface actively supports
higher recycling rates and environmental awareness by improving user engagement and
offering useful information. This aligns technology with the objectives of sustainability and
conscientious waste management.

6.4 Data Collection

A key component of Smart Waste Bin functionality is data collection, which

facilitates more effective waste management and encourages sustainability. These bins
collect data in real time on garbage composition, fill levels, and user behaviour through
the sensors and monitoring devices installed within. The fullness of each compartment is
continuously monitored by sensors, including fill-level or weight sensors, which enables
waste management authorities to optimise collection schedules. This helps to create a
greener environment by cutting down on unnecessary pickups as well as fuel and carbon
emissions.

12
Images of the waste being disposed of are taken by cameras and artificial
intelligence (AI) technology, which helps with waste classification and contamination
identification. With the use of this data, specific interventions can be implemented in order
to better comprehend waste composition trends and contamination rates. Data about
disposal patterns and user preferences are generated by user interaction with the bins,
typically via a user interface. By encouraging better waste sorting and recycling
procedures, this information can be used to engage and educate users. Lastly, authorities
are able to customise waste management strategies, enhance recycling programmes, and
make well-informed decisions regarding garbage disposal practices due to the cumulative
data that Smart Waste Bin collects. This data also provides insights into waste generation
patterns. Smart Waste Bin are effective tools for increasing environmental sustainability
and lowering the environmental impact of waste management because it gathers and
analyses data swiftly.

13
7.0 POTENTIAL TARGET

7.1 Eco-Friendly people

People who are concerned about the environment become potential targets since
poor waste management is one of the causes that contribute to pollution. This is because
this innovation's main function is to improve waste management and practise the eco-
friendly way to handle the waste. Other than recycling the waste, a new feature has been
added which allows the user to turn their food waste into compost that can be used as
fertiliser for the plants. This innovation can also track the amount of waste that is
recycled, composted and sent to the landfill. This information can help the eco-friendly
people to identify areas where they can reduce their waste production or improve their
waste management habits.

7.2 People who have big number of family members

Large families typically generate a significance amount of waste everyday and they
may struggle with limited space for waste disposal thus this innovation allows them to
optimise the space by compacting waste which can be very valuable when the space is
limited.Furthermore, a new feature has been added to our smart sorting bin that enables
it to detect the space that available for disposal so that the household can estimate the
time taken to recycle the items that have been collected. Large families can also use this
innovation to automatically separate recyclable materials from compostable materials and
trash. This can save time and effort and also can help to ensure that all of the waste is
properly disposed of.

7.3 People who live in an urban area

In general, people who live in urban areas typically have higher population
densities thus resulting in increased waste generation. To tackle this issue, Vietnam’s
government decided to create waste management regulations that they must follow which
is they need to sort the waste into their own categories such as recyclable or non
recyclable. This innovation allows them to follow the regulations and avoid the penalty by
automatically sorting the waste into their own categories. This innovation can also help to
reduce waste collection cost for municipalities as they can reduce the amount of waste
that need to be collected and disposed of.

14
7.4 Restaurant

Given the volume of waste that restaurants often create on a daily basis, it may
require an extra time for the staff to manually separate the waste. By automating the
sorting process, this invention helps the restaurant reduce their labour costs and increase
their employee’s productivity by allowing the staff members to concentrate on their
jobs.Additionally, restaurants can also improve the public's view of their business by
showcasing their environmental commitment. They may be able to both draw in eco-aware
consumers and improve their brand's reputation by using this innovation.By separating
compostable waste from other materials, restaurants may further enhance the hygienic
conditions of the environment. By doing this, it can reduce unpleasant odour and prevent
unwanted pests from entering thus enhancing the restaurant's atmosphere.
