Dyes Definition
With regard to their solubility, organic colorants fall into two classes, viz. dyes and pigments.
Basis for colour Unlike most organic compounds, dyes possess colour because they 1) absorb light in the
visible spectrum (400–700 nm), 2) have at least one chromophore (colour-bearing group), 3) have a
conjugated system, i.e. a structure with alternating double and single bonds, and 4) exhibit resonance of
electrons, which is a stabilizing force in organic compounds (Abrahart, 1977). When any one of these
features is lacking from the molecular structure the colour is lost. In addition to chromophores, most
dyes also contain groups known as auxochromes (colour helpers), examples of which are carboxylic acid,
sulfonic acid, amino, and hydroxyl groups. While these are not responsible for colour, their presence can
shift the colour of a colourant and they are most often used to influence dye solubility. Figure 1 shows
the relationships between wavelength of visible and colour absorbed/observed. Other factors
contributing to colour are illustrated in Figures 2–4.

In addition to influencing solubility, auxochromes are essential ring substituents in providing target
colours. This is illustrated in Figure 6, where the following effects of substituents are shown: • Adding
groups of increasing electron-donating ability to the azobenzene structure has a bathochromic effect (cf.
OH vs NH2). • Electron-donating (NH2) and electron-accepting (NO2) groups placed in conjugation
provide a bathochromic effect. In this regard, nitro groups are especially beneficial, contributing to their
prevalence in disperse dye structures. • Increasing the number of electron-attracting groups conjugated
with the electron-donor has a bathochromic effect. • The electron-donating effects of an amino group
are enhanced by adding alkyl groups to the N-atom.

Size
A dye particle is very small while a pigment is comparatively large.
Transparency
Transparency is another difference between dye and pigment. Dyes are more transparent while
pigments are comparatively less transparent.
Solubility
Solubility is also a difference between dye and pigment. Dyes are soluble in water while
pigments are not soluble in water and many solvents.
Type of Compounds
Most dyes are organic while pigments can be either organic or inorganic.
Auxochrome Groups
Auxochrome groups can be present in dyes while no auxochrome groups are present in pigments.
Availability
Also, one other difference between dye and pigment is that dyes are available in a large number
while pigments are less available.
Affinity
Moreover, dyes have a direct affinity to the material while pigments have no direct affinity to the
material.
Binding Agents
Dyes do not require binding agents while pigments require binding agents. Hence, this is
another difference between dye and pigment.
Diffusion
Furthermore, dyes diffuse in the fabric while pigments diffuse on the fabric.
Cost
Their cost is another major difference between dye and pigment. Dyes are costly while pigments
are cheap.
Lightfastness
Dyes have low lightfastness while pigments have high lightfastness.
Product Resistance
The product resistance of dyes is lower while the product resistance of pigments is higher.
Longevity Factor
Additionally, dyes do not last long while pigments last longer.

The word ‘natural dye’ covers all the dyes derived from the natural sources like plants, animal and
minerals. Natural dyes are mostly non-substantive and must be applied on textiles by the help of
mordants, usually a metallic salt, having an affinity for both the colouring matter and the fibre[4].
Synthetic dyes are extensively used in wide range of industries amongst which textile processing
industries are the major consumers

Perkin was the pioneer in producing man made organic dye, mauve, as early as 1856. The first synthetic
organic dye was produced in 1871 when Woulfe prepared picric acid by treating the natural dye, indigo

Basic Requirement for Dyes: Dyes are usually soluble in water. Ability to impart the color. Ability
to standing with washing, drying, cleaning or exposure to light. They should be chemically stable.
Dyes should be absorbed and retained to material to be dyed
Classification of Dyes: Dyes are classified into two types. 1. Natural Dyes 2. Synthetic dyes 1. Natural
Dyes Dyes are obtained from plants like leaves, root, bark etc. and animals are called Natural Dyes. For
example: Alizarine (obtained from Madder plant), Blue dye (Indigo), Red dye or Carmine red (Carmic
acid) obtained from coccus cacti, cochineal (obtained from Insect). Natural dyes are few in numbers and
have limited shades/colors.

. Synthetic Dyes (artificially man made dyes) The synthetic dyes prepared in the laboratory have huge
numbers/Shades. The starting material for synthetic dyes can be obtained from coal tar distillation.
These are classified based on: A. Their mode of application on the fibres B. Chemical structure of the
)dyes (i.e. presence of the different types of chromophore
There are two types of natural dyes. Additive dyes (non-substantive) such as madder must use a
mordant (a chemical that fixes a dye) to bond with fibers. These are the most common type and have
been used for at least 2,000 years. Substantive dyes require no pretreatment to the fabric (e.g., indigo,
)orchil and turmeric

Disadvantages of Natural Dyes Before the advent of synthetic dyes, natural dyes were widely used, often
together with mordants such as alum, to dye natural fibres including wool, linen, cotton and silk, but
their use declined after the discovery of synthetic dyes. However, interest in natural dyes has been
revived owing to increasing demands on manufacturers to produce more environmentally friendly
alternatives to petrochemical-derived dyes. One main issue associated with the use of natural dyes in
the coloring of textiles is their poor to moderate light-fastness, and despite their long tradition, not all
natural dyes are especially environmentally friendly. Some natural dyes have no or little affinity for the
textile materials and they require heavy-metal salts as mordants for fixation and color-fastness. Natural
dyes may be sustainable but they need water and land to produce and there is insufficient dye yield per
acre of plant material to sustain industrial-scale production.
The fabric is soaked in an alkaline solution of phenol followed by drying and then immersed in a cold
solution of a diazonium salt. The azo dye is developed directly on the fibre itself. Such dyes, known as
developed dyes, are called Ice colors also because such dyes formed at low temperature within the
fabric. Para-red is an example of such developed dye. These dyes may be developed in a reverse order
also. The fabric is impregnated with an amine which is then diazotized and developed by immersion in
an alkaline solution of phenol. The name “ingrain dye” is also given to such dyes. These dyes are
particularly useful in making printed fabrics.

Azo dyes are the largest class of synthetic dyes. Approximately 70% of all the dyes used in industry are
azo dyes. They are widely used in textile, cosmetic, leather, pharmaceutical, paper, paint and food
industries.
This linkage may be present more than one time and thus mono azo dyes have one azo linkage while
two in diazo and three in triazo, respectively.
