INTRODUCTION
Average daily traffic (ADT) is to assess volume of traffic on a road or a specific
section of roadway. In the urban landscape of Cagayan de Oro, the intricacies of
vehicular circulation play a pivotal role in shaping the daily fabric of city life. Derived
from an empirical examination conducted by the Japan International Cooperation
Agency (JICA), the city witnesses a substantial daily traffic volume, approximating
41,500 vehicles. Within this vehicular mosaic, small cars constitute a noteworthy 61%,
while the emblematic jeepneys contribute 17% to the overall traffic milieu.
Our focal point shifts towards Recto Avenue, a critical thoroughfare situated
prominently in front of the University of Science and Technology of Southern
Philippines (USTP). This locale serves as a significant intersection where diverse
vehicular streams converge. Within the framework of this activity, our objective
extends beyond numerical scrutiny, seeking a nuanced comprehension of the traffic
dynamics along Recto Avenue. Join us in this undertaking as we navigate the
intricate pathways of urban mobility, contributing substantively to the broader
discourse on Cagayan de Oro's urban dynamics.

OBJECTIVE
The aim of this task is to assess the types and quantity of vehicles that traverse C.M
Recto Avenue on a daily basis.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of the activity, students would be able to;
● To learn and engage in first hand gathering, analysis and apply theoretical
concepts in a practical and real-world setting.
● By gaining a grasp of traffic dynamics, students can improve their
comprehension of road capacity, highway and road network design, and
transportation planning.
● Produce a research in a team
● Work in group to produce a research
THEORETICAL BACKGROUND
In the fields of urban planning and transportation studies, average daily traffic (ADT)
research serves a number of vital functions. The process for carrying out ADT
research entails a set of actions to collect, examine, and evaluate information about
the amount of traffic on roads during a 24-hour period.

PROCEDURE
1. Wearing a safety vest, maintaining an accurate watch, setting the time
correctly, and having an adequate supply of pens, field data forms, and
clipboards are among the prerequisites.

2. In order to become acquainted with the site, distribute the equipment, and fill
out the general information on the tally forms—which included the
enumerator's name, date, weather, condition, and time to start or finish—
enumerators arrived 30 minutes early.
3. In order to determine the intersection under the study's current geometric
dimension, enumerators must conduct field measurements.
4. The present turning, through, and right turn motions of traffic were recognized
and started at the scheduled time.
5. The ideal observer location was chosen to provide for safe, clear, and simple
traffic counting.
6. The counting for volume circumstances is carried out at each lane of each
opposite direction.
7. Before leaving the field, the data was verified.

OBSERVATIONS
During the activity in highway engineering, a location was chosen to conduct the
study - Recto Avenue, fronting the University of Science and Technology of Southern
Philippines. The activity started at 7:30 AM, with the team assigning four individuals to
count different types of vehicles going in both east and west directions.
In the two-hour duration of the observation, a total of 3366 vehicles were counted.
These included 1475 motorcycles, 1176 cars and taxis, 307 vans, 204 medium goods
vehicles, 9 heavy goods vehicles (HGV), and 195 buses.

The observation noted that the traffic was not particularly heavy since it was a
holiday. However, there was a noticeable increase in the number of vehicles at a
particular time due to a parade celebrating Bonifacio Day.
CONCLUSION
The activity in highway engineering provided valuable insights into traffic dynamics
in a real-world setting. The study was conducted on Recto Avenue, fronting the
University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines, with the team
assigning four individuals to count different types of vehicles going in both east and
west directions. Over the two-hour duration of the observation, the team counted a
total of 3366 vehicles, with the majority being motorcycles (1475) and cars and taxis

(1176). If we calculate it, it would be approximately more or less forty thousand three
hundred ninety two (40,392) vehicles passing in C.M Recto for average daily Traffic.
It was noted that traffic was not particularly heavy during the observation due to the
holiday period. However, there was a spike in vehicle volume at a specific time due to
the Bonifacio Day parade. This demonstrates the influence of external factors on
traffic flow and highlights the importance of activities such as this in developing a
better understanding of traffic dynamics and the design and management of
highways and road networks.
By engaging in firsthand data gathering and analysis, the activity provides valuable
learning experiences for students in transportation planning and management. The
activity helps students develop practical knowledge about traffic volume, vehicle
types, and the impact of external factors on traffic flow. Such knowledge is essential
for developing effective transportation solutions for a variety of settings.
