Testing of Transformer 26 27 28 29 30
1.) Open Circuit Test
31 32 33 34 35
An open circuit test is conducted on a transformer to determine iron
loss or constant loss. 36 37 38 39 40
This test is conducted on the LV side keeping the HV side open circuit.
This test is performed at rated voltage and rated frequency. 41 42 43 44 45
The voltage at rated frequency is applied to that LV side with the help of a 
46 47 48 49 50
variac of variable ratio auto transformer. 

Now with the help of variac, the applied voltage gets slowly increased until 51 52 53 54 55

the voltmeter gives a reading equal to the rated voltage of the LV side.
56 57 58 59 60
2.) Short Circuit Test 

A short circuit test is conducted on a transformer to determine copper loss. 61 62 63 64 65

This test is conducted on the HV side keeping the LV side short circuit.
66 67 68 69 70
This test is performed at the rated current.
A low voltage of around 5-10% is applied to that HV side with the help of a 71 72 73 74 75
variac.
Now with the help of variac applied voltage is slowly increased until the 76 77 78 79 80
wattmeter, and an ammeter gives a reading equal to the rated current of
the HV side.
