The Technical Talk on “Mechanochemical Machining of Metals” organized by Society of

Mechanical Engineers under the Mechanical Engineering department took place in the
college premises on 17th December 2021.
The event was a part of one of the various events organized under SME every year. These
events are organized every year with the objective to provide platform for students to learn
more about the current requirements and research going on in the industry.
The talk was given by Dr. Anirudh Udupa who is a Research Scientist from Purdue University,
West Lafayette, Indiana, United States of America. His current research is on
Mechanochemical Machining of Metals.
He spoke about topics such as –

• Why is it difficult to cut soft metals ?

• How to improve the machining of such metals ?
• The physics behind it.
• Effects of Gallium and ink coatings on metals while machining.
• Roscoe effect and Joffe effect.
• Effect of SAM on machining.

The entire presentation consisted of graphs, pictures and videos for better understanding of
the topics. These also made the whole talk more interesting and easier to understand and
absorb.
The event was made even more fun and interesting during when Dr. Udupa shared some
anecdotes about how they accidentally discovered the effects of ink coating on metals while
machining and more.
During the Q/A round interesting and relevant questions were asked and answered. Dr.
Udupa even gave out tips and advices for our future careers.
It was a greatly inspiring session which opened the doors to the field of chemical machining
for us.
