CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Today’s world has become an opened book accessible to the public eyes and ranges all

over the world. Social media platforms played a huge role in making everyone of us be

connected and it is an internet-base formed of communication process. These platforms

provided the opportunity to identified if other social media users have similar interest and

iv
also offered comparison to other users. Kant (2020) Social media used for chatting, sharing

online friendship. Studies have examined the used of social media and apart from passing

time, entertainment, and information seeking, the influenced it brought to many users was

quiet alarming. TikTok, like other social media platforms, has its share of influencers and the

15-sec video makes it a magnet of what is popularly called meme ln this application the user

can created video that they wanted . Gen Z population, which are people born between

1997 and 2012, is skilled in using mobile tools such as mobile phones and tablets to

expressed themselves, and TikTok just is one of the hundreds of possibilities that gives them

a platform to do so. Dilon (2020) described TikTok as the leading destination for short form

mobile video and purposed to inspired creativity and bring joy. However, Tiktok ran into a

series of controversy and in 2019, it was banned in India for a short amount of time due to

“morality issues”. On several occasions, TikTok has been accused of not doing enough to

protect the users who are by and large young teenager and young adults. TikTok was

investigated and became the national security of US.

In the Philippines, the rising trend of social media platforms has been claimed to make

people become less social and created an anti-social behavior. This claimed states that when

youngsters loss interest in studies they tend to “show-off” through apps like TikTok. TikTok

has become an increasingly popular app for people with varying ages. User can create

whatever type of videos they want in this app and post it for anyone to see and though this

application they do things like posting their emotions and feelings. The more time they

spent on social media platforms the more they addicted to it, that's why there are many

case on the Philippines that related in using social media platforms.

The Masbate School of Fisheries has many students who have TikTok accounts. TikTok is

very popular to the students of the school that even if they’re inside the classroom, students

v
use the app for making creative and funny videos of their life styles and classroom routines

especially to the Junior to Senior High students of the institution. This trend becomes quiet

alarming to the school because it brings effect to their studying habit. Thus, this research

aimed at shedding light on the used of the mobile application Tiktok at young students who

is in increasing number in taking up the used of the TikTok application. The researchers

decided to covered this study to discovered and acquired needed information that would

solve and help the researchers unfolded the answered to the questioned if using TikTok

contributed either positive or negative effect in the student’s academic performance.

Statement of the Problem

This study investigated the effect of using TikTok to the Academic Performance of

students. Specifically, it would seek to the following questions:

What is the total numbers of hours spent by learners in TikTok a day?

What are the effects of using TikTok experience by learners in terms of their academic

performance?

What is the relationship between the total number of hours spent by learners in TikTok a

day with their academic performance?

vi
Significance of the Study

This study aimed to assess the effect of using TikTok to the student’s academic

performance through a form of surveyed questionnaire. By relating the total number of

hours spent on using TikTok in a day and the effects of using TikTok experienced by learners

in terms of their academic performance which is the General Weighted Average (GWA) , the

researchers gathered data through survey questionnaire about the effects of TikTok use if it

contributed to either positive or negative result to the students’ understanding of the

courses and purpose of the application to their daily endeavors as a student. Specifically,

this study was beneficially to the following institutions and individuals:

Students: The findings of this study is significant to all students for this will give them

ideas on how to be prepared and become aware of the possible learning distractions

brought by engaging much of their time in social media.

Teachers: This study was significant to teachers in guiding and leading their students to

avoid possible distraction in learning that could cost them to lose interests in their studies.

Parents: This study was significant to parents to give them ideas how they can help and

guide their child developed the sense of responsibility and awareness in dealing with the

trends they browse in social media.

Educational Institutions: The findings of this research was used by schools in the

vii
curriculum development and the decision makings of the school in educating learners with

quality learning. This result presents educational opportunities and awareness to students

as to how the extent of using social media platforms such as TikTok can affect their learning

and development.

Future Researchers: The used of statistical tools to obtained the findings of this study

may serve as a foundation of knowledged to contributed for future studies or innovations of

the learning to make it more relevant to the current study and issues. Other researchers

also in different fields who wished to conduct a study related to the methodologies used

this finding can review and examine the study.

Scope and Delimitation

The study focused on the influenced of having TikTok accounts to the student’s

viii
academic performance, which could be measured and identified through conducting a

survey questionnaire to monitored the effects of the total number of hours spent on using

TikTok app to the academic performance of students of Masbate School of Fisheries. The

study included the total number of hours spent by learners in TikTok a day, and the effects

of using TikTok experienced by the learners in terms of their academic performance and to

identify the effect of TikTok used to every respondent. The surveyed was conducted in the

first semester for S.Y. 2022-2023 of Masbate School of Fisheries. The surveyed respondents

shall be delimited only to the Grade 7 to Grade 12 students through purposively selecting all

the students in the class with TikTok accounts. The data of this study was comprised of

students from the each class, 7-12 graders students of the Masbate School of Fisheries.

CHAPTER II

Review of Related Literature

Social Media enables every person with access and account to connected with their

loved one’s and stay updated with the latest trends around the world. The growth of social

media over pass few years have changed the way users view its purpose (Feng, et al., 2022).

The internet has a high rate of uses people watch billions of video using social media daily.

Every hour users uploaded video content. People have waved these networks into their

ix
daily rating using Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram especially using TikTok.

According to Wang , Gu and Wang (2019), TikTok personalities and influencers who

made used of the platform as the source of income upload contents almost every hour.

TikTok is considered a social networking site because it offers great potential for making

new friends and forming new connections with other people sharing the same interest. This

application enables a person to watch videos, make their own content and be followed by

other viewers. TikTok also helped people to fell less alone and at the same time find the

courage that they neetd to. Students usually used social media for many reasons like

searching for assignment providing specific data in research and study purposes. However,

Herath and Hearth (2020) argued that watching TikTok videos has a negative influence to

the students as they continue to follow the new trends online and get addicted of searching

for more. Moreover, the researchers also stated that more time spent on TikTok results to

poor academic performance of the students. Research conducted by Badri, Nuaimi, Guang,

& Al Rashedi (2017) observed the effects of using Social Media application like Facebook,

WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, etc on the academic performance of students. The findings

showed that the usage of Social

Media applications by the students have both positive and negative outcomes. Different

studies explored in Pakistan have showed that students enrolled in undergraduate programs

have higher changes of having loneliness due to excessive use of the Internet (Saleem,

Wassem, Khan & Ismail, 2015). According to Stothart, Mitchum and Yehnert (2015), TikTok

is increasingly getting popular causing an obvious in student’s behavior and their studying

time. Kuznekoff and Titsworth (2013), highlighted on their studies how social medias

specifically the trending platforms such as TikTok consumes much of the student’s time that

tends to loss their interest in other important work being a son or daughter and being a

x
learner.

There are only few previously conducted studies which focus on the relationship of its

positive and negative effect – to one of the determinants of academic success, which is the

engagement of students, most especially in a local setting meaning further investigation

should be performed. Stemming from the idea that a phone can posed as a distraction and

learning can be influenced by using a phone, what about social media causing distraction to

student’s learning? Spence, Beasley, Gravenkemper, Hoefler, Ortz and Campisi (2020),

looked at the effect that social media specifically Instagram has on retaining information

taught to students in college. While there are presented researches that social media app

particularly Instagram could cause learning distraction less is known about other Social

Media applications specifically TikTok. There are only few studies that have been done on

the TikTok application and none of them got specific result in determining the potential

distraction as it relates to student’s learning.

Using TikTok can captivate anyone who using the applications and can cause something like

addiction, where you do not want to get off the app. The more time people use TikTok app

and spend on social media where they become addicted to the app Ciplak, (2020). There are

many apps on the cell phone that can cause addiction to students especially on TikTok.

There is evidence that social media app like TikTok could cause learning distractions as it

relates to student learning. We know that from other research that using a phone while

completing different task can pose as a distraction Thornton, Fairs, Robbins, and Rollins

(2014). There is a positive relationship between addiction to TikTok and poor academic

performance of students and are also consistent with the findings of Maguire and Pellosmaa

(2022), that excessive use of social media apps such as Face Book, Instagram, TikTok links

with higher levels of stress and depression. Social media addiction is a type of internet

xi
addiction in which people have an overwhelming desire to use social media Griffiths, (2017).

The use of social media like TikTok create addiction to all student that affect their academic

performance of the students in the school.

The evolution of the internet has greatly impacted the way students communicate and

collaborate in the school. Social media has become an integral part of their daily lives and

has the potential that can affect the academic performance of the students. According to

Swathi GK and Devakumar C (2020), that the impact of TikTok app on the student’s

academics and psychology analyzed how TikTok application has bought low academic

performance of the student. It shows that many of the student addicted to social media

applications. In addition it found out that the more college student spent in TikTok each

day, the more they become distracted when they are trying to pay attention in class and

complete course works Mekler (2021), Social media app can attract anyone who use it

especially TikTok and have a negative impact on the students academic performance.

Students who spent more time on social media are more likely to struggle academically. This

is because instead of reading books, they spend their time chatting and making friends on

social media, which will have a negative impacted to their grades Talaue et al., (2018).

Therefore, it can be concluded that students who more spend their time on social media the

more that can affect there academic performance.

xii
CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

Research Methodology

In this study, is mixed method research approach was used to achieve the purpose of the

research study. The study was completed through the given written data of the respondents

which was distinguished through non-probability sampling technique. The result was

obtained from purposive sampling selection wherein the population of all students of

Masbate School of Fisheries Junior High School to Senior High School , the researchers

selected students from each purposive who was become the respondents of the study. The

foundation of the data gathered was in the form of questionnaire which take half an hour

for the respondents to answered.

Research Design

The researchers used mixed method research incorporated technique from qualitative and

quantitative methods to answered questions, mixed method research inquiries choose from

a full repertoire of methodological options at any number of multiple points in an inquiry

process. According to Teddlie and Tashakkori (2003) mixed methods research involves the

collection or analysis of quantitative and qualitative data in a single study in which the data

is collected concurrently or sequentially and only the data is integrated at one or more

stages in the process of the research. This study is mixed research because this research

xiii
aimed at gaining a deep understanding of us specific event which is using tiktok

Research Instrument

This study utilized the used of survey questionnaire to gathered the necessary data and

information needed to answered the research questions. This instrument was composed of

the the number of hour/s spent in TikTok app, student ‘s General Weighted Average and

learners’ perspective in the effects of TikTok app to their studies which the respondents can

fill out.

Data Gathering Procedure

The procedures that were undertaken in the data gathering was in this order:

After the proposal is approved, the researchers finalized the instruments and sampling

frame. The researcher revised the proposal based on the recommendation of the teacher

and then the researcher prepared for the questionnaires to be give to the respondents. The

survey questionnaires was distributed to the respondents’ once the Practical Research

Teacher approves the instrument. After the preparation of survey questions, the

researchers will make a letter to the school principals signed by the Practical Research

Teacher to ask for the consent in disturbing the class of all students of Masbate School of

Fisheries specially stating the date and time to conduct the study. In asking the consent of

the principal, the researchers asked for the permission of the subject teacher to disturb the

class for half an hour showing the teacher the letter signed by the school principal to give

time for the student to answer the survey questionnaires. First the researchers administered

the purposive sampling to determined the students that have TikTok accounts. From the

non-probability sampling, the researcher performed the purposive sampling technique to

determined which student from the purposive be the respondents who answered the given

xiv
survey. The researcher gathered the data from the identify respondents. After the data

gathering, the researcher compared, tally, and analyzed the data.

Sampling Method

In this study the researcher used purposive sampling that focuses the students in Grade 7-

12 Junior High to Senior High School of Masbate School of Fisheries, purposive sampling

enables the researchers to squeezed a lot of information out of the data that have

collected. This allows researchers to describe the major impact to their findings that have in

students in Masbate School Of Fisheries and also the researcher use purposive sampling

method in selecting sampling from the overall sample size based on the judgment of the

survey taking by the researcher. In other words, a purposive sample is collected according to

the requirement of the test, survey, or research that it’ll be used for.

Respondent

This study involves purposive sampling of respondent from Grade 7 to Grade 12 students of

Masbate School of Fisheries. The researchers ‘respondent was selected through non-pobaliy

technique of the purposive to create equal number of potential respondents that

participated in the study. Though this sampling the researcher selected the participants on

every Grade level and Section's that participated in our study.

Statistical Treatment of the Data

This study used statistical tool that help the researcher to analyze the gathered data

the following the statistical procedure were used to interpret the data gathered from the

respondents of the study.

Correlation

xv
The data satisfy through a Pearson correlation was used to determined the linear

relationship between quantitative variables.

In this study, the researchers used simple percentage, and pearson correlation

1. Simple Percentage. The demographic profile variables of the respondents were

analyze using the simple percentage with the following formula.

F
P = — (100)
N

where:
P = Percentage

F = Frequency for each category

N = Total number of respondent

100 = Constant multiplier

2. Pearson correlation. This used to determine the linear relationship of two quantitative

variables.

where:

N = the number of pairs of scores

∑ 𝑥𝑦 = the sum of the products of paired scores

∑ 𝑥 = the sum of x scores

∑ y = the sum of y scores

xvi
∑ 𝑥² = the sum of squared x scores

∑ 𝑥² = the sum of squared of y scores

Table of correlation

[0.75, 1) Very high

[0.5, 0.75) Moderately high

[0.25, 0.5) Moderately low

[0, 0.75) Very low

CHAPTER IV

Presentation, Analysis and Interpretation of data

The process of organizing the information collected from the respondents to arrived at

the conclusion is known as the data analysis. The data is analyzed in such a way that it

supports the research goals. To find out the effects of using TikTok on student's academic

performance , data was collected from 200 respondents who are students of Masbate School

of Fisheries and this was done directly by the respondents. The data collection was

conducted through a survey questionnaire. The researcher evaluate and tabulated the

quantitative data tables and interpreted it to gain a better understanding.

Social media is an internet online platforms, where the persons sharing similar

interests communicate with each other. Users, through social media , may reach their friends,

develop new friendship and convey their messages by sharing post to large message. Social

media emerged as a modern fact in our life as a result of the increase in time users spent 30

minutes and 1 hour in a day internet use Boyd and Ellison (2007).

xvii
The addition of social media platforms increasing in the past few years and there are

many studies that can prove the increasing time. According to Kayikcioglu and Teker (2020)

the time spent by young people on the internet has increased students used 3 hours and 4

hours a day in social media these factors have enhanced the social media users

To determine the total number of hours spent by learners in TikTok a day. The

researchers add all number of hours spent by learners in TikTok and result is 370 hours this

the total number of hours in using TikTok a day.

Figure 1. The effects of using TikTok using pie graph

The figure above shows that the effects of tiktok to students highly reduces their stress

which has been the recorded highest factor of influence. However, the least effect of tiktok to

students is that it makes students less attentive or unfocused to what they are doing. Students

become distracted when they engages themselves on using TikTok. The findings and

interpretation of the researchers based from the result of the gathered data from the

respondents the findings of the researchers it's shows that using TikTok in there academic

performance many students agree that is not affecting their academic performance only

reducing their stress however their are many studies that claimed TikTok has a negative

effect to students academic performance in our studies TikTok is only reducing stress in

students . This findings supported by Raut and Patil (2016) in their study ‘Use of Social

Media in Education: Positive and Negative impact on the students’, revealed the practical

problems of using internet medium of communication and its uses for educations.

r =CORREL(B2:B201,C2:C201)

r = 0.02237

xviii
The range of correlation coefficient is from -1 to 1. Our result is 0.02237 which

means that the variables X for the hours spent on TikTok for a day and Y for the average

grades have based on the level of relationship strength. This means that the two variables are

related to each other very low correlation. The number of hours spent in using Tiktok have a

relationship between the academic performance of students .

CHAPTER V

Summary, Conclusion and Recommendations

This chapter presents the summary and conclusion derived in the conduct of the study

which is to probe on the effects of using TikTok to the academic performance of students in

grade 7-12 in Masbate School of Fisheries. It also provides recommendations that can

pursued by the students.

The study conducted in Masbate School of Fisheries the respondents in the study are

Junior High and Senior High school students. They were selected through the purposive

sampling and to utilize Masbate School of Fisheries researcher used survey questionnaire to

gathered information data to interpret and answer the SOP in research. Permanent data

obtained through survey questionnaire statistical tools were applied mean, percentage and

pearson correlation.

Summary of findings

The findings of the study were summarize accordingly to the statement of the problem stated

in Chapter 1.

The total numbers of hours spent in TikTok a day based from the gather data the result is 370

xix
hours this is the time spent by students in using TikTok app.

These is the effects of using TikTok 38.5% prefer reduce stress , 33% prefer grained more

knowledge through the app, 11% prefer motivated to study, 20% improve performance in

school/ high grades, 11% prefer low grades, 7.5 inability to focus, 17% lack of time doing the

activities, 0.5% not paying attention in the class, 6% late to come to school, 20.5% Boost

your confident, 3.5% lack of motivation to participate to school activities, 1.5% cannot be

determined, 8% become stressed, 11% unleashed talent/creativity, 13% no time for making

homework,13,5% no time to study, 7% improve participation in school activities,2.5% lack

of motivation,

The result is 0.02237 very low correlation meaning their is relationship between the

quantitative and qualitative variables in the study between the average total numbers of hours

spent by learners in TikTok a day and the General Weighted Average (GWA).

Conclusion

This study was conducted to identify the relationship between the total numbers of

hours spent by learners in TikTok a day and the General Weighted Average (GWA). This

study shows the relationship between these two variables to know if these variables

connected to each other. The researcher find out based from the gathered data from the

respondents and the through the help of correlation to indentify if there are relationship to

their academic performance, the study and finding results that there are relationship between

the total numbers of hours spent by learners in TikTok a day and the General Weighted

Average (GWA) these two variables have relationship to each other but TikTok didn't affect

or influence the academic performance of students only reducing their stress.

xx
Recommendations

Recommendation from the findings of the study, the researchers recommend that:

1. Teachers can use TikTok application as another education tools to the better understanding

of the student. It can be used to circulate the important information of topic through a short

vedio clips.

2. Student can use TikTok app as another education tools to the better understanding about

the topic, but they limits the hours that they spent in using tiktok.

3. The researchers can encourage some learners that not have TikTok account to make

account in TikTok. Students highly using TikTok application positivelz as a form of

entertainment and creation.

4. Future researchers must used better statistical tools to obtained the perfect correlation and

to identify the used of TikTok to students academic performance.

School Bullying is a serious social problem that results in potentially severe and long

lasting consequences for youth, parents, teachers, and School officials. The victims of

bullying may suffer multiple negative consequences, including poor social and academic

adjustment, depression and anxiety. The main purpose of this study was to locate or

determine the behaviors of every learners in Masbate School of Fisheries on having bullying

issues and to help them on how to deal with this problem, and also to ask for solution on how

to prevent bullying problems in Masbate School of Fisheries. Masbate School of Fisheries are

confirmed that it is continues a line in bullying problems, which the students are really

affected and impacted. An extensive survey questionnaire was performed in gathering the

data to investigate or know the students feelings, information, and experiences in bullying.

And found out among grade 7 to 12 learners have a 189 of the students are experiencing

bullying. Out of 189, 98 or 52% are female. 71 or 38% are male. 6% are bisexual, and the gay

has 4%. The majority of the age are 16 years old and the majority of the grade level are Grade

11 students that experiencing bullying problems. Based on the results, more of the students

are really affected, impacted, and suffering the negative effects of bullying. Their academic

performance are also affected.

In this regard the researchers would like to help the students on how to deal with this

xxxv
problem, and the researchers would like to recommend on the sector that at least responsible,

this is like School, Teachers, Administrators, and Community to help them on how to prevent

bullying problems in Masbate School of Fisheries and better understand the sentiments and

behavioral performance of every Students not only in Masbate School of Fisheries for

involvement in the state of bullying problems of the students, and the need to implement

bullying programs that will conclude both settlement and organizations as well as

considerations to prevent bullying. The school should also establish a way to provide students

with a way to communicate with their teachers and peers to open their problems, and also

make a “Bullying Programs” on how to prevent bullying. In this way, the students will be

able to know and to asked, and give a ways on how to avoid and prevent bullying effectively.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Bullying has become an increasingly significant problem that affects school-aged

children and youth from all backgrounds, and its effect can harm their psychological,

emotional, behavioral, and social development. Bullying is commonly defined as repeated

behavior intended to harm another individual involving an unequal power between the

aggressor and the victim (Nansel et al., 2001). Traditional forms of bullying have been

classified as physical (hitting), verbal (name-calling), and social (ignoring or isolating;

(Ockerman, Kramer, & Bruno, 2014). Although bullying was once dismissed as a normal part

of growing up, we know now that it is a subtle antisocial behavior that traumatizes millions

of students each year and verifies the fabric of school life for millions or more. Most

principals understand the global realities of the problem that an estimated 15% to 30% of

students nationwide are bullies or victims. Bullying encompassed a spectrum of aggressive

behaviors ranging from overt acts of physical violence to more subtle yet equally destructive

verbal or relational cruelty patterns. Bullying is a common thread that connects the school's

most troubling issues, including suicide, substance abuse, increased absenteeism, and

academic failure (Hinduja & Patchin, 2008).

The greater challenge lies in recognizing bullying in school. Teachers and administrators

frequently underestimate the range and effect of bullying, hence, as a result, fail to prevent

or stop it from happening. It was fueled by the indifference of nearly 25% of teachers in

which reports revealed that they do not think it necessary to intervene in bullying and by

the confidential nature of the behavior (Modecki, Minchin, Harbaugh, Guerra, & Runion,

2014). Adolescents are experts at shielding their social and antisocial lives from adults.

1
Moreover, although students know bullying is painful, they often are unaware that bullying

is wrong or preventable, so they do not report it. Hence, changing this perception is most

important. Failure to stop bullying implies a tacit approval of the behavior, enabling bullies

and condemning victims and bystanders to feel further victimized by the system. Principals

can help their staff members and students take an honest look in the mirror and create 3/27

an environment where bullying is never tolerated, and all students feel safe and valued on

every school campus.

Masbate School of Fisheries is a technical-vocational school catering to more than 2,000

students from different barangays in the municipality of Milagros. Among grade 7 to 12

learners in Masbate School of Fisheries was confirmed that it is a line in bullying problems.

Some students were bullied because of their family backgrounds, appearance, and

conditions and for being different/unique or "weirdos." Bullying among students in MSF

became a problem that affected their learning modalities and behaviors. Although bullying

is a systematic issue in the school environment, and which have been demonstrated to

generate negative effects on students (Chibbaro, 2007; Hinduja & Patchin, 2008; Nansel et

al., 2001). Bullying may cause negative long-term effects on boys' and girls' emotional

development (low self-esteem), decreased school performance, attendance, and mental

health distress. For instance, victims of bullying may experience social withdrawal, isolation,

lower self-esteem, and higher levels of depression, anxiety, and anger. These can lead to

academic disengagement, decreased academic performance, and increased suicidal ideation

and completion (Bhat, 2008; Kitagawa et al., 2014; Landstedt & Persson, 2014). Bullying can

affect the student's academic performance and bring other problems (Bhat, 2008; Kitagawa

et al., 2014; Landstedt & Persson, 2014). Furthermore, bullying is destructive and harmful to

2
its effect on students.

Despite the negative feedback stated by the professionals, it is harmful and unavoidable for

most students to experience more harmful effects of bullying in the student's situations.

In this regard, the researchers studied the behaviors of every learner at Masbate School of

Fisheries, Cayabon, Milagros, Masbate. This study determined the behaviors of every

learner in their performance in school. Furthermore, the researchers determined and

specified the learner's behaviors, feelings, experiences, realization, and morals/manners.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The general purpose of this study was to determine the behaviors of every learner in

Masbate School of Fisheries through their performance in school to acquire all the essential

knowledge, data, and information. Specifically, the researchers sought answers to the

following question:

1. What is the demographic profile of learners experiencing bullying in terms of:

a. age?

b. gender?

c. grade level?

2. What experiences do they have with bullying?

3. What are the preventions taken by the school to prevent bullying?

3
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study's main purpose of conducting this research paper was to determined the

"Prevention of Bullying in Senior High School Students of Masbate School of Fisheries."

Moreover, researchers believed the study's results would help the following

individuals/entities.

Students. This study gave information about bullying cases, prevention related to

bullying in school, and circumstances related. In addition, this study would help them

minimized the chances of being the victim. It would also help them boost their confidence

once they have become the victim.

Administrators. This study helped school administrators develop strategies, plans,

and solutions to students' bullying issues. This study would also provide benefits and plan

development to prevent bullying issues brought about by the information captured in this

study. However, this study helped school administrators to provide ways and plans to help

students who are experiencing bullying and how to prevent bullying.

Future Student Researchers. This study served as the basis for future studies on

bullying prevention. It could be a reference for future researchers who undergo similar

studies. This study also provided insights among student researchers in acquiring learning

and ideas that can guide and help them to create further improvements and developments

for their future studies.

4
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study focused on the prevention of students at Masbate school of fisheries who

experienced bullying.

The focus was conducted at Masbate School of Fisheries for the school year of 2022-

2023, utilizing all MSF students that had experienced being bullied, which will be chosen

through the Purposive Sampling Method.

This study was measured and identified by conducting a survey questionnaire to

monitor the effects of the total number of the person which could be measured and

identified through conducting a survey questionnaire to monitor the effects of the total

number of the person who was bullied.

5
CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Prevention of bullying and impetuosity is of significance. This research presents

information on school bullying characteristics and its impacts. It is any unwanted aggressive

behavior by another group of youths that involves an observed or perceived power

imbalance. Bullying may affect harmful agitation, including physical, social, and

psychological harm.

According to Smith and Polanin, bullying stems from youth violence and aggressive

behavior. The researcher said every youth has violent and aggressive behavior made by one

bully or more bullies. Bullying harms everyone who can experience bullying, and students

feel fear (Smith et al. 2002; Polanin 2012). The types of bullying include physical, verbal,

social, and cyberbullying, and the incidence/prevalence of bullying. This section reviewed

the literature on bullying and school environment, bullying and its impact on academic

performance, and reactive victims.

The behaviors involved are mostly verbal and seldom.

Including physical violence has pinpointed that the behaviors involved in bullying may

be common in everyday life. Nevertheless, they may cause much harm and disgrace when

occurring regularly. It may not be the nature of the conduct that makes the victim suffer.

The frequency of the acts, situational factors relating to power differences or inescapable

interactions, or the victim’s attributions about the offender’s intentions may cause as much

anxiety, misery, and suffering.

Bullying is the act of intentionally harming someone. According to Menesini &

6
Salmivalli (2017). Similarly, perpetrators experience long term consequences such as a

higher risk for depression and can engage in activities, such as vandalism and theft. Bullying

includes higher risks depression, destruction academics, and name-calling, several other

school behaviors are recognized as forms of bullying, such as: sexual harassment repeated

exhibitionism, voyeurism, sexual propositioning, and sexual abuse involving unwanted

physical contact.

Ostracism is based on perceived sexual orientation. Bullying is identified as one of the

most major problems faced by children in the Education system, as well as one of the most

significant health risks and multiple outcomes associated with being bullied. (Raskauskas &

Model 2011). Being bullied has negative effects on every person; it may cause depression,

lack of confidence, and academic performance in every student; being bullied is not easy for

anyone. They can be scared to face the public.

Cynthia (2014) analyzed performance either in short or long term. She found

differences in the relationship between bullying level and academic achievement. Students

who are bullied frequently experience depression, low self-esteem that may last lifetime,

physical illnesses, and frightened or attempted self-harm. Some students also miss or leave

school altogether because they have been bullied. Bullying causes various psychosocial

adjustment problems for the victims. The victims’ distress is quite understandable since the

negative treatment by peers. It tends to be highly persistent.

It hypothesized that attitudes and classroom norms uniquely contribute to predicting

the students’ behavior. Pro-bullying attitudes, classroom norms that allow/encourage

bullying, would thus be associated with engagement in bullying behaviors (bullying others

and assisting or reinforcing the bully). Anti-bullying attitudes and anti-bullying norms were

7
expected to prevent such behaviors and, in turn, enhance support for the victims and active

side-taking with them. However, based on previous findings regarding the attitude-behavior

relationship concerning bullying and related behaviors, we expected the effect of attitudes

to be moderate after controlling for gender and grade level.

Ammermueller (2012) found that bullying significantly negatively impacts present and

future students’ performance in school. They cause low academic performance. Each

student’s peer-evaluated sum score on each scale was divided by the number of evaluators

producing a continuous score from 0.00 to 2.00 for each student on each scale.

The internal consistencies of the scales were good in previous studies. Despite the

reduced number of items, the inner surface of the scores was satisfactory. Bullying among

children and youths leads to different physical symptoms, such as headaches and sleep

disturbances. Bullying in schools also leads to anxiety, depression, and substance use among

youth.

According to Menesini & Salmivalli (2017). It can cause a negative like depression from

being bullied, and it may cause suicide in every person.

The negative psycho-social factors of bullies in traditional, cyber, and combined

bullying compared to non-involved students confirmed the seriousness of school bullying.

These correspond to previous studies showing that students who experienced bullying had

negative indications in all psychological variables. In particular, compared to traditional

bullies, bullies cyberbullying had less social support. It has been identified as a significant

protective factor in bullying.

Specifically, family social support was identified as a protective factor against bullying

8
perpetration. Additionally, anti-bullying interventions are more effective when accompanied

by family involvement and class-wide or individual intervention. Further evidence suggests

that social support enhances an individual’s problem-solving skills and psychosocial

adjustment.

Bullying also raises the risk of being violent later in life by about one-third, according to

(Ttofi, Farrington, and Lӧsel 2012) has a negative outcome on every person's life. A study by

Juvonen (2011) showed that boys had lower numerical scores of physical victimizations,

while with girls, all types of bullying affected their scores. It happens if students engage in

aggressive behaviors, including low academic performance, negligent behaviors, and early

school dropout.

It was supported by Orpinas (2015) research, which showed that the act of exclusion

from other School activities is a social or delinquent behavior that exists in schools and is

very well-known by students, teachers, and parents. Similarly, José (2017) established that

peer victimization is a Center for depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Peer

victimization negatively affects school performance as children stay away from school due

to victimization. They are often the most 9/27 difficult to identify because, at first glimpse,

they seem to be targeted by other bullies. However, Reactive victims often taunt bullies and

bully other people themselves. Such victims are defense- Drive, and they use verbal or

physical retaliation, including shouting and pushing, according to (Burton,Florell, & Gore,

2013) cyberbullying. This type of bullying involves the imbalance of power, aggression, and

repetitive negative actions, but these occur online through instant messaging, emails, chat-

room Posts, or texting (Kowalski, Limber, & Agatston, 2008). Cyberbullying aims to socially

Embarrass or isolate the victim by having information witnessed publicly (Dehue, Bolman, &

9
Vollinkl, 2009).

The school environment is not only a haven for learning but a place where several

activities occur, according to (Smith, 2016). Relational leadership and ethics are

complementary Approaches applied in schools to regulate bullying (Bosu, 2011). To assure

effectiveness, the school climate, curriculum, resources, and leadership must be balanced to

avoid bullying.

The leadership skills and characteristics of school principals are very important in the

everyday functioning of the school and in influencing the incidences of bullying in the school

environment (Cunliffe, 2011).

According to Maliki (2009), everyone that is a bully has been bullied before. Students’

ability to succeed academically is influenced by bullying as they feel unsafe. Bullied children

are weak, shy, and anxious and stay away from school due to victimization. Experiences lead

to poor academic performance, according to (Rose, 2011). Bullying is associated with being

unsafe in schools, the sorrow of not belonging at school, and skipping school to avoid

victimization. Bullying and victimization are associated With poor academic achievement in

schools due to their effects on the students (Kokkinos, 2012). Students do not feel safe and

lose interest in attending school due to harassment from fellow Peers. Victimization is

negatively associated with poor academic performance in males and females as either of

them will avoid school due to bullying threats or feel very depressed about studying in An

environment where they feel unsafe. (Wang, 2011) stated that bullying and victimization

could be directly or indirectly related to psychological maladjustment, school engagement,

peer acceptance, and other factors that could mediate these acts of bullying and

victimization. Victims of 10/27bullying are usually exposed to problems such as emotional,

10
behavioral, and psychiatric disorders and poor or impaired academic performance

(Nakamoto, 2010). At the mental health level, victims of bullying are faced with depression,

insomnia, feelings of loneliness, hopelessness, low self-esteem, suicidal ideation, and

suicidal attempt. It is important to note that the negative consequences of bullying do not

usually end but often continue to adulthood and can negatively affect the individual's life.

Physical violence can trigger violent behavior, which can be passed to peers and teachers in

the classroom and the learning environment since bullying is a life-changing experience.

The results of all the effects of bullying usually result in poor academic performance in

schools. Another trigger of bullying and physical violence is poor negotiation between

parents in the family setting. The family is always the first learning contact of any child, and

any violent behavior portrayed at home by the parent will easily be picked up by the child

who grows. Normally, victimization from bullying leads to mental health problems, school

Absenteeism, and low self-esteem (Farrington, 2009). A study by Juvonen (2011) showed

that boys had lower numerical scores of physical victimizations, while with girls, all types of

bullying affected their scores. When students engage in aggressive behaviors, problems

arise, which include low academic performance, delinquent behaviors, and early school

dropout. It is supported by research according to Orpinas (2015), which showed that

exclusion from other school activities is a social or delinquent behavior that exists in schools

and is very well-known by students, teachers, and parents. It is an extension of behaviorism

that emphasizes other people's influence over a person’s behavior, stating that every person

learns through observation and imitating other people’s behavior.

Similarly, José (2017) established that peer victimization is a center for depression,

anxiety, and low self-esteem. Peer victimization negatively affects school performance as

11
children stay away from school.

The behavior stems from an intent to cause fear, distress, or harm; The behavior is

repeated over time, and there is a real or perceived imbalance of power between the bully

and victim (Ferguson et al. 2007; Merrell et al. 2008; Nansel 2001). Bullying can be physical

(e.g., hitting, punching), verbal (e.g., name-calling, teasing), or Psychological/relational (e.g.,

rumors, social exclusion). Individual 11/27 involved with bullying are classified as bullies,

bully-victims, and victims. Moreover, bullying had negative outcomes associated with being

a bully, being bullied, and being a bystander. A recent meta-analysis looked at the

association between bullying and psychosomatic problems and found that victimized

children, bully-victims, and bullies were at increased risk of suffering psychosomatic

problems compared to uninvolved peers (Gini and Pozzoli 2008).

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter covers the methodology of the study that can enable development of an

understanding of the meaning that people describe to their experiences. According to

Denzin(2008) The research methods researchers can utilized in conducting concrete

qualitative studies, this is studies important in educational research as it addresses the

“HOW” and “WHY” Research questions and qualitative research allows you to asked

questions that cannot be easily put into numbers, to understand and human experienced,

does study used to understand and people Believes ,Experiences, , Attitudes, Behavior and

interaction it generates non numerical data/the integration.

RESEARCH DESIGN

This study used a qualitative research approach to achieve the objectives of the

research study. According to Mitchel (2013) Various decision-making methodologies have

emerged from the literature, but which are the most breakable. Schniederjans surveyed

these other methods, analyzed them, explained them carefully, and provided a new

approach to help optimize the location and selection. This qualitative research aimed to a

deeper understanding of a specific organization that surfaces a description of a large

population sample. It can help researchers to access the thoughts and feelings of research

participants. The finished study was performed through the written survey questionnaire

given to the respondents, which will be determined through nonprobability sampling.

13
RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

This study is a type of study with a qualitative approach to understanding the

exploratory reasons and assays how and why a specifically programmed phenomenon

operates in the way it is working. According to IEEE INFOCOM (2004), consider the problem

of correlated data gathering by a network with a sink mode and a tree communication

structure. Consequently, explicit communication, case we power that building optimal data

gathering tree is NP-complete and we proposed various distributed 15/27 approximations.

Algorithms, methods mentioned in the blog reviews, surveys, group discussions, and

observations are the most widely and commonly used qualitative data collection methods.

However, there are a few other data collection methods, such as longitudinal studies,

document revision, etc. They are rarely used.

SAMPLING METHOD

In this research, the researchers used purposive sampling based on all students of MSF

because purposive sampling certifies the researcher to exert a lot of data that they must

gather. It intends the researcher to portray their research's major effects on MSF learners. It

was needed in this research because this sampling addressed bullying in general. All grade

levels, but its prevention focus will be at the high school level, according to Hathorn and

Harris (2006).

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

The study aimed to discuss the different perspectives of the learners about bullying

prevention. The researcher chose a qualitative design that best satisfied the study's

objective. With this design, the researchers prepared survey questionnaires. Respondents

14
are learners of Masbate School of Fisheries; the questionnaire was constructed briefly to

ensure the respondents understood. The researchers asked permission from the teacher to

distribute the survey questionnaire to the selected participants using paper where the

question was written or printed. The researchers managed and explained the survey

instrument to the selected participants. Respondents were given sufficient time to answer

the question clearly to avoid inaccuracies. Afterward, the 16/27 re searchers analyzed the

data collected deliberately and precisely to total the number of respondents that responded

to questionnaires accurately and later compiled them for analysis and interpretation.

Statistical Treatment of the Data

This study used statistical tool that help the researcher to analyze the gathered data

the following the statistical procedure were used to interpret the data gathered from the

respondents of the study.

Simple Percentage. The demographic profile variables of the respondents were

analyze using the simple percentage with the following formula.

P = — (100)

where:

P = Percentage

F = Frequency for each category

N = Total number of respondent

100 = Constant multiplier
