We're good to go for marching in the parade. I paid the fee and received confirmation. If we can't get
vendor/booth space then maybe those who volunteered for that will consider marching with us instead.

I'm hoping we can still get in. Definitely a good reminder for me not to wait too long to apply. I will let the
outreach team know the status.

I'm working on getting our parade and vendor application for Pride submitted. Please take a look at the
description draft I created for the parade. I used to help Andy write these, so this one is pretty standard,
but I'm happy to make any edits if you'd like. I want to submit this soon--early bird pricing ends July 1 so
the sooner the better. If not by today then by Monday.
Happy Northern Nevada Pride from your friendly librarians at Washoe County Library! We're proud to
support the LGBTQIA+ community, and we're committed to being an inclusive and welcoming space for
everyone. We're your number one destination for free access to books, online resources, digital
downloads, and exciting events like Drag Queen Story Time! Stop by and pick up your free library card at
any one of our 12 library locations! We can't wait to see you there. Happy Pride!

Yes I know. For one thing our staff and Ginger were excellent no matter the circumstances.
People attended the Storytime, it was not disrupted, and people had a good time. If protestors
need to go to such extreme measures to stop a childrens Storytime those people are not winning
this argument.
Yes a ton of National pickups. I’ll see if Jamie and I can capture all of them.

Thank you for reaching out. I saw recently that California was having park passes available to check out
from local libraries. I can follow-up with the California State Librarian to get more information. I know
we had local interest when that news was released.
Washoe County Library buys into a system consortium available in Northern California called Discovery
and Go. Patrons can go to our website, look at the available museums (that include both Northern
Nevada and Northern California) select a date and log in with their library card. They can then print out
the pass and to the museum the day of their reservation.

I am happy to get on a call to provide more information. Certainly a state-wide program would be really
fun and more sustainable. We might be able to partner with California and their program there.
Thanks,

Hi there,
My name is Dominique and I am with Nevada State Parks. I was recently contacted by the Las Vegas-

Ms. Srisarakorn,
Thank you for reaching out with your concerns. Drag Queen Story Time is an inclusive program for the LGBTQ
community. When Washoe County Library conducted its strategic plan in 2021, celebrating our diverse community
was one of the top themes that patrons wanted to see. We have storytimes in June during Pride month, with themed
storytimes and book displays available.
We have a Santa Storytime throughout December and march in the Sparks Hometowne Christmas parade (where we
have won for best costumes and best spirit the last few years). We do try to include everyone to ensure everyone
feels welcome.
I appreciate your concern. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do for you.
Sincerely,
Jeff

Hello,
I wanted to start bringing my daughter to story time and let her begin to explore the library but I will no longer be
supporting Washoe County Libraires due to the Drag Queen Story Time. I believe you can be inclusive without
putting ideologies onto children. You can welcome anyone who is part of the LGBTQ community without
promoting their lifestyle. I am a Christian. By being extreme in your inclusivity and offering Drag Queen Story
Time you are making me uncomfortable and I feel excluded.
During Christmas time do you read about the birth of Jesus? At Easter do you read about how he died on a cross in
order for us to be saved and able to go to Heaven when we die? If you don’t that’s okay, because it is a public
library where politics and personal beliefs should be kept separate or only on the shelves for people to choose from.
I would not expect a public library or school to talk about religious beliefs or politics to children. It should be the
same for beliefs and lifestyle that the LGBTQ community offers.

On the channel 4 news today they showed the Sparks Library and an apparent
confrontation regarding the book reading program. They showed a brief snippet with
you and, I must admit, I've not seen that side of you before. My compliments on your
obvious defense of the library and concern about having an armed man posing across
from the library. Your courage and passion were obvious and most welcomed.
With the cancellation of the June LBOT meeting, I'm not sure what protocol is for July.
At this point Amy should be taking over as chair, but with no vote being taken in June,
where does that leave us? My resignation is supposed to take effect once my
chairmanship is over, so if my presence is of any value for the July meeting, let me
know and I will attend. Thank you Jeff, and thank you for your vivid defense of library
values.

Sparks Drag Queen Storytime Event Report
Talarico, Lori A.
LIBRARIAN I
Sparks Library hosted two successful Drag Queen Storytime Events on Sunday, June 26, 2022 with special guest Miss
Ginger Devine. A total of 58 children and adults attended this fun event. Miss Ginger read My Shadow is Pink by Scott
Stuart, It's Okay to be a Unicorn by Jason Tharp, and Mary had a Little Glam by Tami Sauer. We danced with bubbles and
sang If You're Fabulous and You Know It and The Hips of the Drag Queens go Swish, Swish, Swish. Everyone had an
opportunity to draw outside with chalk, blow bubbles, and color some Pride themed coloring sheets.
A special thank you to Miss Ginger Devine for being an amazing story reader. We also appreciate Library Admin and Staff
that showed up to help out, thank you Jeff, Joan, Beate, Judy, Debi, Jamie, John, Sarah (SV), Jennifer (SV), Jessica (SV), and

Ms. Kerrigan,
Thank you for reaching out. Drag Queen Story Time is a popular local program at our libraries and other
community locations such as The Generator and The Nevada Museum of Art. These programs exist due
to popular demand. Our program in 2019 brought over 800 families to the event.

The proud boy protestors left at 1:05 and the Sparks PD (observing from several parking lots
over at about 300 yards away) left right afterward. The gunman showed up at 1:17. One of our
patrons was able to take a picture.
I would say that even though that there is some dispute as to who the gunman is (who according
to Sparks PD can open carry even though the rifle was unslung and in his hand) I find the claim
that he is not associated with the proud boys dubious. He was dressed in the same manner and
showed up right after everyone left.

Thank you so much again for sitting down and talking on Saturday. I have left you a couple of
voicemail messages but I figured I would ask here, too.
I just want to get a little more clarity on the end of the Proud Boys protest on Sunday in Sparks. I
know Channel 4 reported that there was a Proud Boy that, towards the end of the protest, had a
gun and approached the library. But I also heard from people on the scene that the Proud Boys
left when a counterprotester who often open carries showed up. Can you offer any clarity on
this?
Best,
Jose
Yes we plan to continue them. It is doubtful that it can return to Sparks without a guarantee of
security and basic services. A library staff member who was interviewed did not want to go on
camera for fear of retaliation. Until Sparks PD can guarantee basic safety in Sparks it cannot
return.

Hi Jeff -
This is Leanna with News4.
I was hoping to speak with you about the incident from yesterday's Drag Queen Story Time event at
Sparks Library.
The director of Sparks library mentioned you typically organize some security between Sparks Pd &
Washoe County so I was hoping to speak with you about the preparation that goes into an event like
this.
Are you available at all today for a quick interview? I can meet you in person or we can hop on a Zoom.

Hi Jamie & Andrea!
How's it going?
I'm doing a follow up story on the incident outside of the Sparks library during the Drag Queen
Storytime event. I spoke with Miss Ginger and she said Jamie took some videos from the event.
I was wondering if she could send me a few that I include in my story?
Our reporters were so focused on what was going on outside -- they didn't get a chance to see
all the fun inside. Anything you send will be helpful and I'll be sure to make sure no kids are
visible. Happy to attribute the footage to Jamie or Washoe Libraries.

I met you briefly yesterday while waiting for the 11:30 event to begin. I was sitting on the bench and you gave me
your card. I want to tell you how much my family enjoyed the event and how much we appreciate all of the work
that went into it. Also we felt safe despite the protestors. I only wish the police would have helped. Thank you so
much for all you and your staff do.

Our reporters were so focused on what was going on outside -- they didn't get a chance to see
all the fun inside. Anything you send will be helpful and I'll be sure to make sure no kids are
visible. Happy to attribute the footage to Jamie or Washoe Libraries.

I'm doing a follow up story on the incident outside of the Sparks library during the Drag Queen
Storytime event. I spoke with Miss Ginger and she said Jamie took some videos from the event.
I was wondering if she could send me a few that I include in my story?

Hi all,
Just wanted to include a few more people to make sure this makes it your way – we definitely want to
include your perspective if you would like to speak.
I’m working on a deadline of 6pm ET/3pm PT today, so please let me know if you would like to share
any information.
Thanks,
James
I hope this finds you well. My name is James, I’m a reporter at the Washington Post. I’m looking into the
report that a group of Proud Boys protested outside of the Drag Queen Story Hour at your Sparks Library
on Sunday, and one man approached the library with a gun following the event.
I saw on Facebook that the library posted that the event was a big success, so I want to make sure that if
we report this story, we have all the necessary context beyond this short local news story. I hoped you’d
be open to speaking on the phone today about what happened so we can fully understand the context.
Alternatively, if it’s easier to provide an email statement, that works too.

Incident Report
Drag Queen Storytime at Sparks
Library set and ready for Storytime at 10. Program is scheduled for 11:30 and 12:30.
Geoffrey Knell (Fallon Resident) and nine adult males in 30s to 40s approached and stood at the protest
zone. Counter protestors approach the zone to engage. I approached the protestors and gave them my
card which they mostly refused. The nine protestors were wearing black shirts with a yellow trim on the
collar. They all wore black baseball hats.
Geoffrey Knell proceeded to shout obscenities through his bullhorn. All these actions are in line with a
standard protest zone.
At 11:30, protestors left the protest zone and blocked the parking lot entrance. I engage them to return
to the protest zone. The individual pushed me. I asked them to leave. I instructed Corinne and Allied to
call Sparks PD to ask them to leave the premises.
Sparks PD arrived at 12:25. They did not go to the Sparks Library. The parked 600 yards away from the
library. I had to run over to them. Their squad card were not in sight of the library. I walked over to the
seven officers. She asked if I wanted to press charges. I told them no. I said I have asked them to leave
and they have refused. I want them trespassed. The lead officer then told me they could not do that as
they were on the protest zone or on the public sidewalk. They refused to do a walk by drive by or even
approach the library.
The protestors and Geoffrey Knell left at 1:05. Sparks PD left at 1:05 (directly after the protestors left)
(They were stationed at the City of Sparks Recreation Center Parking lot about 600 yards away from the
library.)
At 1:17 a masked man with similar clothing as the protestors approached the library on the sidewalk. He
was carrying a long rifle with the rifle in his hand. Everyone outside ran into the building and Allied
engaged with the individual. The person left a few minutes afterward as we sheltered in the library.
Sparks PD was called again. Sparks PD did not show. Sparks PD later stated that it was legal for him to
carry his weapon unslung. (Pictures attached)
Sparks PD was at the Parking lot near the City of Sparks recreation facility and remained there until 2:36
when they had to call a tow truck since they drove their squad car over the curb. Sparks PD did a walk
through at the Sparks Library 2:15 after the event was over and everyone else had left.

Library set and ready for Storytime at 10. Program is scheduled for
11:30 and 12:30.
Geoffrey Knell (Fallon Resident) and nine adult males in 30s to
40s approached and stood at the protest zone. Counter protestors
approach the zone to engage. I approached the protestors and gave
them my card which they mostly refused. The nine protestors were
wearing black shirts with a yellow trim on the collar. They all wore
black baseball hats.
At 11:30, protestors left the protest zone and blocked the parking
lot entrance. I engage them to return to the protest zone. The
individual pushed me. I asked them to leave. I instructed Corinne
and Allied to call Sparks PD to ask them to leave the premises.
Sparks PD arrived at 12:25. They did not go to the Sparks Library.
The parked 600 yards away from the library. I had to run over to
them. Their squad card were not in sight of the library. I walked
over to the seven officers. She asked if I wanted to press charges. I
told them no. I said I have asked them to leave and they have
refused. I want them trespassed. The lead officer then told me they
could not do that as they were on the protest zone or on the public
sidewalk. They refused to do a walk by drive by or even approach
the library. The protestors moved back into the protest zone at
12:45. The protestors and Geoffrey Knell left at 1:05. At 1:17 a
masked man with similar clothing as the protestors approached the
library on the sidewalk. He was carrying a long rifle with the rifle
in his hand. Everyone outside ran into the building and Allied
engaged with the individual. The person left a few minutes
afterward as we sheltered in the library. Sparks PD was called
again. Sparks PD did not show. Sparks PD later stated that it was
legal for him to carry his weapon unslung. (Pictures attached)
Sparks PD was at the Parking lot near the City of Sparks recreation
facility and remained there until 2:36 when they had to call a tow
truck since they drove their squad car over the curb. Sparks PD did
a walk through at 2:15 with three officers. An hour after the
incident.

Subject: Storytime Incident
I wanted to send a quick message regarding our Storytime on Sunday. We are reviewing what
happened with local authorities to ensure everyone’s safety.
We had 10 protestors at the Sparks Library on Sunday. When the Storytime ended a man with a
rifle approached the library. Allied Security approached the man and he left. We will be
reviewing this incident with Washoe County and City of Sparks. I will send a full message
tomorrow. Channel 4 news was there when this occurred. A story aired this evening and will
likely air again later. The full story should be online soon.

Sparks PD was at the Parking lot near the City of Sparks recreation facility and remained there

Sparks PD did a walk through at 2:15 with three officers. An hour after the incident.

Library set and ready for Storytime at 10. Program is scheduled for 11:30 and 12:30.
Geoffrey Knell (Fallon Resident) and nine adult males in 30s to 40s approached and stood at the
protest zone. Counter protestors approach the zone to engage. I approached the protestors and
gave them my card which they mostly refused. The nine protestors were wearing black shirts
with a yellow trim on the collar. They all wore black baseball hats.
Geoffrey Knell proceeded to shout obscenities through his bullhorn. All these actions are in line
with a standard protest zone.
At 11:30, protestors left the protest zone and blocked the parking lot entrance. I engage them to
return to the protest zone. The individual pushed me. I asked them to leave. I instructed Corinne
and Allied to call Sparks PD to ask them to leave the premises. Sparks PD arrived at 12:25. They
did not go to the Sparks Library. The parked 600 yards away from the library. I had to run over
to them. Their squad card were not in sight of the library. I walked over to the seven officers. She
asked if I wanted to press charges. I told them no. I said I have asked them to leave and they
have refused. I want them trespassed. The lead officer then told me they could not do that as they
were on the protest zone or on the public sidewalk. They refused to do a walk by drive by or
even approach the library. The protestors moved back into the protest zone at 12:45. The
protestors and Geoffrey Knell left at 1:05. At 1:17 a masked man with similar clothing as the
protestors approached the library on the sidewalk. He was carrying a long rifle with the rifle in
his hand. Everyone outside ran into the building and Allied engaged with the individual. The
person left a few minutes afterward as we sheltered in the library. Sparks PD was called again.

essentially promoting depopulation by encouraging children to alter their sex and therefore, not
able to procreate.

The landmark abortion ruling Roe v. Wade today was overturned by the U.S.
Supreme Court, but Nevada groups are already reminding people abortion remains
legal in the Silver State.
Justice Clarence Thomas wrote a separate but concurring opinion to overturn Roe. He
suggested protections for same-sex marriage and birth control could also be
overturned in the future.
“For that reason, in future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive
due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell,” he wrote.

The ACLU of Nevada issued a statement reminding that abortion, due to voter-
approved inititaive and state law, will likely not change in Nevada for up to 24 weeks.
A vote of the people could change that, however.
“Abortion access here in Nevada may be safe for now, but extremists have made it
clear that they will work to ban abortion nationwide. None of our rights or liberties are
secure in the face of a Supreme Court that would reverse Roe,” the ACLU’s Executive
Director Athar Haseebullah said.
Northern Nevadans, upon the release of a draft ruling leaked in May, held three
separate demonstrations decrying the change to Roe v. Wade.

Events like Drag Queen Story Time provide an opportunity for families to embrace diversity
and develop cultural competence. According to the American Library Association’s Library Bill
of Rights, “when we recognize, value, and embrace diversity, we are recognizing, valuing, and
embracing the uniqueness of each individual.”
I am thrilled to bring Drag Queen Story Time back in person. In 2019, over 800 families
attended this popular event, with many more watching the virtual version online in 2020 and
2021. We hope that events like these will encourage inclusivity within our community.
Washoe County Library is a proud supporter of the LGBTQIA+ community and continues to be

I was recently notified that Washoe County Library plans on bring back Drag
Queen Story Time. I personally have no issues with Drag Queens. However, I am
an adult. What I do have an issue with is exposing children to any sexual lifestyle.
This borders on child abuse and is morally wrong.
The left continues to push sexualization on children. Why can’t children enjoy
just being a child. When they grow up they will be exposed to different lifestyles
and they will have the maturity to discern what is acceptable or not acceptable to
them as an adult.
I hope you will consider what I have written. I appreciate your time,

Hello Jeff,
I am outraged and furious that this Drag Queen Story Hour is going to be presented again at our libraries.
It is inappropriate and undue influence to subject such young children to this lifestyle. Adults may conduct
themselves in private how they wish- but leave it there. Children have enough to deal with and enough
confusion trying to grow up. Very bad use of our county library premises. I believe that most of our Reno
citizens are conservative and would not support this activity. Stop promoting this behavior. And just when
are you planning to have something like American Military Heroes Story Hour?????

Hi Jeff,
That sounds great. Is there a quiet spot we could use to record something for the radio after
the Saturday session? Also, when do you anticipate the session finishing on Saturday? I really
appreciate your openness and flexibility with this!
Best,
Jose
I have realized that next year, 2023, marks the 50th anniversary of the North
Valleys Library service to our community. Our branch first opened at the Reno-
Stead Airport campus in 1973.
I have spoken with Theresa and Carly to get their perceptions on this
opportunity; as a leadership team we have decided this is worth the lift to
celebrate. We believe that a concentrated effort to celebrate (publicly) our 50 th
will support awareness leading to the Expansion Tax renewal, conversations with
our community about what the role of the NV library can be in the coming 50
years, and celebrate the expansion of services with the Cold Springs Kiosk,
amongst the myriad other smaller things such a celebration will support for our
branch and library system.
The vision at this time is to model this anniversary after the efforts of our own WC
Parks Dept. with the Rancho San Rafael 40th anniversary:
We have well established connections and relationships with existing and retired
staff who can contribute to the historical re-telling of our story as well as help
support events throughout the year. These people (and others) would be invited
to work with us on a planning committee to develop the plan and facilitate over
time.
I am seeking your input and thoughts about this proposal. Do we have your
blessing and support? Who else (stakeholders) would you recommend we solicit
for feedback before making a decision to develop a plan? Anything else you'd
like us to consider?
Sincerely,
Jonnica

Events like Drag Queen Story Time provide an opportunity for families to embrace
diversity and develop cultural competence. According to the American Library
Association’s Library Bill of Rights, “when we recognize, value, and embrace diversity,
we are recognizing, valuing, and embracing the uniqueness of each individual.”
I am thrilled to bring Drag Queen Story Time back in person. In 2019, over 800 families
attended this popular event, with many more watching the virtual version online in
2020 and 2021. We hope that events like these will encourage inclusivity within our
community.
Washoe County Library is a proud supporter of the LGBTQIA+ community and continues
to be an inclusive and welcoming space for everyone.
We have photos and videos from previous events so that you can get a good idea of the
storytime. We have had this storytime virtually the last two years:

You’re exposing children to a deviant life style, and reinforcing it with the sanctity and safety of a public library?
This is conduct which should be condemned not publicized and supported.

Hi Jeff,
I'm writing to ask you to cancel the Drag Queen story hour for the libraries. This is not age appropriate
for children and I'm not sure what kind of message is being sent? I spent a short amount of time on
Ginger Devine's facebook page and found so much sexual explicit content/photos (see a few attached).
I'm concerned about any adult who thinks that 'exposing' young children to this kind of adult activity is a
good idea. Would you be able to post things like this on your social media and not face criticisms or
consequences in your position with a welcoming to entertain and influence children? Why don't the
same rules for the rest of us in society apply to this person? This decision reflects very poorly on the
leadership that decided to schedule this.
I hope you make the right decision and stand up for our children's innocence by cancelling this.
We're excited to get some article-style content in the next issue. Especially on this very hot topic. Very
cool!

Hello,
The Explorer team is working on our plan for the fall issue. We've got a couple of pages devoted to all the
literary events and celebrations happening locally and nationally. I talked with John and we were thinking
it would be great to include some sort of write up about the hot topic of banned books.
I'd love to include a short essay/article in the fall issue on the topic.
Would any of you be interested in contributing? Something around 500-800 words would be ideal. We
could use a longer article from one person, or perhaps two shorter articles from two people.

I'm writing to ask you to cancel the Drag Queen story hour for the libraries. This is not age
appropriate for children and I'm not sure what kind of message is being sent? I spent a short
amount of time on Ginger Devine's facebook page and found so much sexual explicit
content/photos (see a few attached).
I'm concerned about any adult who thinks that 'exposing' young children to this kind of adult
activity is a good idea. Would you be able to post things like this on your social media and not
face criticisms or consequences in your position with a welcoming to entertain and influence
children? Why don't the same rules for the rest of us in society apply to this person? This
decision reflects very poorly on the leadership that decided to schedule this.
I hope you make the right decision and stand up for our children's innocence by standing up
against this.
Thank you for reaching out. Typically, we don’t have media in the room during the event to allow for
space for the kids. We are all available once the program is over for interviews and media. Will that work
for you?
We have the program on Saturday at Downtown Reno Library and Sunday at Sparks Library.
Thanks

My name is Jose Davila and I am the new K-12 education reporter at KUNR here in Reno and I
was wondering if I could attend the story time session on Saturday to talk to parents and kids
about the event. I saw that adults without children are (obviously!) no allowed, so I figured I
would ask for your permission. Otherwise, I'd love to schedule a time to talk to you about the
program. I'd love to talk to Miss Devine, too, if possible.
Best,
Jose

You’re exposing children to a deviant life style, and reinforcing it with the sanctity and safety of a public library?
This is conduct which should be condemned not publicized and supported.

Is Jeff Scott the new Groomer and Chief? This is all about
sexualizing by
the LGBTQIA+ community to justify their lurid behavior to our susceptible

Join Ginger for story time sessions at the Downtown Reno Library on Saturday, June
25 at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., and at the Sparks Library on Sunday, June 26 at 11:30
a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Limited seating is available for each session on a first-come, first-
served basis. Each adult attending must be accompanied by one or more child(ren). At
least one caregiver must stay with child(ren) throughout story time.
Washoe County Library has been a proud host of Drag Queen Story Time since 2019.
According to Library Director Jeff Scott, “we are thrilled to bring Drag Queen Story Time
back in person. In 2019, over 800 families attended this popular event, with many more
watching the virtual version online in 2020 and 2021. We hope that events like these
will encourage inclusivity within our community.”
Events like Drag Queen Story Time provide an opportunity for families to embrace

Library Director Jeff Scott, "we are thrilled to bring Drag Queen Story Time back in person. In 2019,
over 800 families attended this popular event, with many more watching the virtual version online in
2020 and 2021. We hope that events like these will encourage inclusivity within our community."
Events like Drag Queen Story Time provide an opportunity for families to embrace diversity and
develop cultural competence. According to the American Library Association's Library Bill of Rights,
"when we recognize, value, and embrace diversity, we are recognizing, valuing, and embracing the
uniqueness of each individual."

Subject: PW Close-Up: Grand Central Publishing introduces Legacy Lit
“We aim to pull people out of the margins of their own communities by publishing
books for everyone,” Krishan Trotman, v-p and Legacy Lit publisher told PW.
Trotman chose the imprint’s name to reflect her vision for Legacy Lit as a gift to
generations to come. “Fifteen years in book publishing have revealed to me a
consistent craving by BIPOC authors, readers, and publishing insiders,” Trotman
said in the Legacy Lit press release. “That craving is to be understood, to be
‘seen’… I’ve felt humbled by the excitement authors express when they meet me—a
Black woman, someone of a brown hue—who understands their work without
needing explanation, documentation. Our goal is to nurture and serve all people
hungry for books that confirm their experience and history.”
Legacy Lit’s diverse list will include narrative nonfiction; memoir; women’s interest,
social justice, and cultural and empowerment titles; and select fiction offerings.
“From big-think books to narrative nonfiction and novels,” Trotman told PW, “we
want to authentically showcase the grit and grime of the human experience
alongside the profound joy and insight that every reader has once felt while knee-
deep in a book.”
This newsletter was produced in partnership with Legacy Lit and Grand Central
Publishing
Tell me about the mission behind Legacy Lit and how the imprint is uplifting
BIPOC and other diverse voices.
At Legacy Lit we elevate and celebrate voices that are not traditionally represented
in literary and cultural spaces. We aim to pull people out of the margins of their own
communities by publishing books for everyone—people who are grieving, male
survivors of assault, working women of color, genderqueer folks, to name a few.
Why did you choose the name Legacy Lit for the imprint, and how does it help
to capture your aspirations for the books and authors you publish?
Legacy Lit was inspired, in part, by one of our authors, the late Representative John
Lewis, author of Across That Bridge, which is a reflection on his work as a civil rights
activist with lessons for readers. I wanted to give the imprint a name that would
reflect the timelessness of books and that would capture the mission, too. Years
later, the book is a part of Representative Lewis’s legacy. All books are—they’re the
stamp that authors put on the world. So Legacy Lit felt fitting.
Allen’s remarkable photos of today’s Black Lives Matter protests, which have been featured in the New York
Times, the Washington Post, and twice on the cover of Time Magazine, were inspired by Gordon Parks’s
photographs of the civil rights movement and create a vision of the past and future of Black activism and
leadership in America. With contributions from 15 bestselling and influential writers and activists of today—such
as Clint Smith, DeRay McKesson, D. Watkins, Jacqueline Woodson, Emmanuel Acho, Keeanga-Yamahtta
Taylor, and more, alongside the words of past writers and activists such as Martin Luther King Jr., Frederick
Douglass, Malcolm X, Maya Angelou, John Lewis—No Justice, No Peace is a reminder of the moral
responsibility of Americans to dismantle unjust laws and take direct action.

When David and his siblings should be in elementary school, they are instead walking the streets seeking shelter
while their mother is battling mental illness. They rest in train stations, 24-hour diners, anywhere that’s warm and
dry; they bathe in public restrooms and steal food to quell their hunger. When David is placed in foster care, at
first it feels like salvation but soon proves to be just as unsafe. He’s moved from home to home and, in all but
one placement, he’s abused. His burgeoning homosexuality makes him an easy target for other’s cruelty.
David finds hope and opportunities in libraries, schools, and the occasional kindhearted adult; he harnesses an
inner grit to escape the all-too-familiar outcome for a kid like him. Through hard work and unwavering resolve, he
is able to get a scholarship to Vassar College, his first significant step out of poverty. He later graduates from
UCLA Law with a vision of using his degree to change the laws that affect children in poverty.
Told with lyricism and sparkling with warmth, A Place Called Home depicts childhood poverty and
homelessness as it is experienced by so many young people who have been systematically overlooked and
unprotected. It’s at once a gripping personal account of deprivation—how one boy survived it and ultimately
thrived—and a resounding call for readers to move from empathy to action.

From the time we’re born, a litany of do’s and don’ts are placed on us by our families, our communities, and
society. We’re required to fit into boxes based on our race, gender, sexuality, and other parts of our identities,
being told by others how we should behave, who we should date, or what we should be interested in. For so
many of us, those boxes begin to feel like shackles when we realize they don’t fit our unique shape, yet we keep
trying because we crave acceptance and validation. But is “fitting in” worth the time, energy, and suffering?
Actor, writer, and activist Brandon Kyle Goodman says, Hell no it ain’t!
As a Black nonbinary, queer person in a dark-skinned 6’1”, 180-pound male body born into a religious immigrant
household, Brandon knows the pain of having to hide one’s true self, the work of learning to love that true self,
and the freedom of finally being your true self. In You Gotta Be You, Brandon affectionately challenges you to
consider, “Who would I be if society never got its hands on me?” This question set Brandon on a mission to
dropkick societal shackles by unlearning all the things he was told he should be in order to step into who he
really is. It required him to reexamine messy but ultimately defining moments in his life—his first time being
followed in a store, navigating his mother’s born-again Christian faith, and regretfully using soap as lube (yes,
you read that right!)—to find the lessons that would guide him to his most authentic self.
Compassionate and soulful, funny and revealing, You Gotta Be You is an unapologetic call to self-freedom. It’s
about turning rejection (from others and yourself) into a roadmap to self-love. It’s a guide to setting boundaries
and fostering self-growth. And most importantly, it’s an affirmation that we are enough exactly as we are.

Equally moving and liberating, Black Boy Smile is D. Watkins’s love letter to Black boys in concrete cities, a
daring testimony that brings to life the contradictions, fears, and hopes of boys hurtling headfirst into adulthood.
Black Boy Smile is a story proving that when we acknowledge the fallacies of our past, we can uncover the path
toward self-discovery. Black Boy Smile is the story of a Black boy who healed.

Then he was accused of discriminating against a Black student at a local university. "How could I be racist?" he
wondered. Whiteness was a problem, but it wasn’t really his problem. He taught at a majority Black school and
wrote essays about education and civil rights. But it was his problem. Working as a reporter, he became clear
that white supremacy was tearing the country apart. When a white kid from his hometown massacred nine Black
people in Charleston, Woods began to delve into his family’s history—and the ways that history has affected his
own life. When he discovered that his family—both the Baynards and the Woodses—collectively claimed
ownership of more than 700 people in 1860, Woods realized his own name was a Confederate monument. Along
with his name, he had inherited privilege, wealth, and all the lies that his ancestors passed down through the
generations.
In this gripping and perceptive memoir, Woods takes us along on his journey to understand how race has
impacted his life. Unflinching and uninhibited, Inheritance explores what it means to reckon with whiteness in
America today and what it might mean to begin to repair the past.

Proud Boys Disrupt Drag Queen Story Time at San Lorenzo
Library
By Lisa Peet
On Saturday, June 11, a group of five men disrupted a children’s
Drag Queen Story Hour at the San Lorenzo branch of the Alameda
County Library, CA, shouting homophobic and transphobic insults.
No one was injured, and library staff were able to move the children
and their caregivers, as well as performer Panda Dulce, to a safe
area of the library before members of the Alameda County Sheriff’s
Office arrived and led the intruders—believed by library
administration and law enforcement to be members of the East Bay
Proud Boys, a local far-right group—from the building.

The surge of interest in fake news in the last decade has prompted
an outpouring of research on how the American public interacts
with misinformation. This list of suggested resources will appeal to
academics, to high school and undergraduate students seeking
better methods for engaging with the news, and to general readers.
Together, they provide a well-rounded overview of the role of
misinformation through history and what readers can do about it
today.
New Ohio Law Clears Way for More Guns at School Amid
National Debate Over Arming Educators
By Kara Yorio
The Uvalde shooting reignited the debate to allow educators to
carry weapons in school. The new law signed this week by
Governor Mike DeWine makes educators and staff eligible to carry
weapons on campus with much less training than previously
required.
Leiden University Libraries chose the Alma platform for its flexibility,
governance, ongoing support and sophisticated analytics – and the
community that comes with it.

LGBTQ+ history collection.... Thanks to the skilled archival work by
Batt (currently at New Brunswick’s Provincial Archives) and Green
(formerly with the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick), and the
authors’ local knowledge and dedication to honoring “their boys,”
the volume contains many threads that tie the photos to the greater
legacy of queer people in their many contexts." This Might Be Too
Personal: And Other Intimate Stories, by Alyssa Shelasky, is this
week's starred memoir. "A fun, laugh out loud, yet tender read for
memoir-lovers and fans of Shelasky’s work." Girl, Forgotten, by
Karin Slaughter, is this week's starred mystery. "Slaughter skillfully
leads readers on a thrilling journey into the past to solve the murder
that a small town wants to forget, yet is still haunted by. Will appeal
to fans of Michael Koryta, Joe Lansdale, and Jennifer Hillier." And
in fiction, Nothing But the Truth, the debut novel by Holly James, is
this week's starred selection. "Could be the next The Devil Wears
Prada.... James’s debut is a sharply funny feminist spin on the 1997
Jim Carrey film Liar Liar".

Sure maybe something like this unless you can think of a better one…
We are thrilled to bring back Drag Queen Storytime in person. In 2019, over 800 families
attended this popular event with many more watching the storytime online in 2020 and 2021. We
hope that events like these will encourage inclusivity with everyone in our
community.
Thanks

Jeff --
Across the country, books are being challenged and banned from school and
public libraries at an unprecedented rate. These challenges are
disproportionately targeting LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC authors and perspectives.
Join our June 29 live broadcast to hear authors discuss how the rise in
censorship, and the targeted suppression of ideas and perspectives of diverse
authors, intersects with our conception of America, and the rights and freedoms
that are celebrated on July 4th.
