Saturday
Brown Out

I was awakened by the deafening cry of my baby sister. I gently opened

my sleepy eyes and noticed that I was already sweating like a pig! I tapped my digital
clock and it is still 2 am. This is what I hate most— power interruption in the middle of
my sleep! How can I go back to sleep and continue the Episode 2 of my dream when
my room here is steaming like you are inside a pressure cooker? I barely helped
myself by getting an oversized fan in my drawer and ventilate myself immediately. I
cannot open my glass windows because I’m afraid that a black cat will hop through
or…or a white lady will enter…or maybe I’m over thinking again! I would like to divert
myself from this sauna situation. Will I update my blog using my phone, or will I just
continue expressing my thoughts in this journal? How will I escape this scorching room
in the middle of summer days?

1. How will you describe the character in the journal?

A. The character was able to find a way to cope with power interruption.
B. The character got easily irritated due to power interruption.
C. The character is patient with the power interruption.
D. The character is scared of the power interruption.

2. How will you describe the tone of the character?

A. annoyed B. frightened C. patient D. worried

DO THIS

One of the best ways of developing your writing skill is constant practice.
Writing a lot may help you develop the skill effectively. Let us start by writing
personal journal entries which are recordings of your day-to day experiences or
important accounts of the day; or, collection of information and ideas through
viewing, listening and readings. But before writing short compositions of journal
entries, it is best to outline your range of thoughts. Kindly do the tasks that follow.

Friday

My grandmother is my favorite person. Today, I have observed and therefore

can conclude that my grandmother is a happy person. She always wears a big smile
especially when she greets the people she sees. She greeted those in the street with
cheering hand waves and with her usual greeting, “kamusta?”. The people also
responded with warm smiles. At one time, I saw her today sitting beside my mom who
was looking upset over something. After a few words of whisper from grandmother, my
mom smiled. Lastly, today I heard my grandmother sang several songs which was an
indication of being happy. I also think that grandma is a happy pill of our family.

EXPLORE
E

Well done, learner. You have now come to the

part where you need to critically think as you
deepen your understanding of the key concepts
regarding writing journal entries and short
compositions exploring the key elements of fiction.
Reread, review and analyze your outputs in the
“Do This” part of the module and answer the
following guide questions in your notebook.

1. What is a journal? What usually are its topics or contents?

2.What do you think is the purpose of keeping a journal?

3. Are you familiar of a diary? What do you think is its similarity and difference to a
journal?

4.What are the important take-aways or key ideas that you learned about a journal?

5. How do you write a journal? What should be included in it?

6. In what ways do you think a journal is useful?

After answering, assess your responses. How do you feel? How many items
are you satisfied with your answer? How many are left unanswered? If you have
answered all, well done. This assumes that you have the grasp of the topic. If you still
have unclear thoughts, better prepare and read well the next portion.

KEEP THIS IN MIND

Well done! You have successfully made

a meaningful connection after answering the
previous activities. Now, you are all set for the
discussion on journal writing.

Journal writing is an example of a short composition. It only requires few

sentences unlike in short stories, essays, speeches, play and the likes.

A journal is a daily, or periodic account of events and the writer’s thoughts and
feelings about those events (Holt, Rinheirt and Winston, 2000).1
Personal journals are not normally written for publication, but sometimes they
do get published later with permission from the author or the author’s family. A
journal is not intimate and less personal unlike a diary which is written only for the
owner’s private reference and pleasure.

The topics and content of a journal may vary. At times, a journal becomes a
requirement in school. It is when a teacher asks you to keep a record to update or
progress in lessons or topics of a particular course or subject. Sometimes, it is
assigned to encourage reflection about a certain theory, concept or topic. For
example, the teacher asks you to reflect on the lines of the poem “Like the Molave”
written by R. Zulueta De Costa.

According to Barnwell (1987), the writer needs to learn how to interview

oneself and also know how to ask the appropriate questions that would encourage
you to start talking about your observations and experiences and express through
writing, you may begin with simple to complex questions. 2

Thus, from “What makes the day today different from yesterday? How did you
feel about it?” it could develop to: “What theory or life’s principle have you learned
through your actions?” He also suggested that the same questions should be asked
repeatedly to develop self- confidence in writing.
A journal as a snapshot album can capture different aspects of life. Thus, you
need to write freely guided by your thoughts and feelings. And if not motivated by
your own deeds and experiences, you may take the observed actions of a foe or a
friend.

Furthermore, Krenzke, Kemper and Sebranek (1996) suggested journal writing

tips that could serve as your guide and to keep you going. 3

Tips in Writing a Journal

Try writing nonstop. You may select at what point of the day will you write. It may be in the
morning or in the evening or in any time you are comfortable. Journal writing may be done
daily or periodically. Write as though you are talking to yourself or a friend.

Focus on ideas, not looks. The real deal with journal is when you make new discoveries.
Your writing and its content shall develop even in a slightest way. Thus, concentrate on your
thoughts and disregard the appearance e.g. penmanship.

Always date your entries. It is easy to review and recall when dates are indicated. You need
to read your entries from time to time. Underline interesting insights.

Push an idea as far as you can. You may write an idea in different angles and perspectives.
With this, you may uncover new ideas.

Experiment in your writing. Dare to be original. Connect ideas creatively weaving together
the main ideas and details distinctively. Use imagery, figurative language and literary devices.

Kopiko 78°

I did not expect that my first demonstration teaching last Friday would turn into a
traumatic ambulance experience. It was almost three o’clock in the morning and I just
arrived to my boarding house from my part-time job in a nearby famous restaurant. I
hurriedly changed my working clothes to my comfy shirt and pajama. I almost forgot that
it would be my schedule for my demo teaching few hours from now. One hour had passed
and I was already on the last part of my lesson plan. I was so busy seeping my Kopiko
78° caramel frappe until I noticed that I was about to throw its third empty bottle. My brain
cells were not working properly since I was already exhausted. I got no choice so I have
to let the coffee pass through my worn out veins just to finish my lesson plan plus my
visual aids. Moment by moment, my eyes went droopy, hearts pounding rapidly and I was
involuntarily shaking. I knew that this would really happen. I hardly took a short nap and
prepared myself, as if I was really prepared to face another challenging day. Time quickly
fleeted away and I was now in front of my students. I was about to greet them a snappy
morning when I could not feel my limbs. I was panicking and I could not search for my
voice. In just a snap, everything turned black. The moment I woke up, I was already inside
the university’s ambulance with oxygen tube on my nostrils. I was gasping for air and my
head really hurt. I felt alarmed, knowing that I almost killed myself from exhaustion but the
nurse told me that everything will be okay. I felt that I was terribly drained and I did not
care for myself. I was so preoccupied with my part-time job and my student life. Maybe it
was time to think of my priority.

APPLY WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED

Reaching this point, you are expected to

have a clearer understanding of the important
key concepts and take-aways in writing a
journal. Hence, you are now to apply what
you have learned in the following tasks.

Task 4: Directions: Read and understand the sample journal entry in the box below.
Next, evaluate the sample journal entry based on what you
know. Write your answer in paragraph form in your notebook.
Here are some guide questions that may help you in answering:

1. What topic is revealed in the journal entry? What helps you identify the topic?
2. What is the main idea or theme cited in the entry?

3. What point of view is used?
4. Who/ what do you think is the writer of this entry?
5. Are there literary devices, figure of speech or imagery used in the entry?
6. Did the writer express his/her thoughts clearly and freely using his/ her thoughts
and emotions? Cite examples.
7. Did the writer develop the thoughts in an organized way?
8. Do you find the journal interesting and significant? Why or why not?
9. Is the journal entry significantly effective or not?

April 3, 2019
The Best Day I Never Had

It could have been our graduation day today. The day where I could walk as
happy as a lark wearing my maroon toga and cap. I guess my hardworking mother will be
very proud of me. But I am even more proud of her because she raised me well and she’ll
sell our “balut” and roasted peanuts even until midnight just to send me to school.
“Despite our poverty-stricken life, you have to graduate, Nak. I’ll do everything just to see
you receiving your diploma someday.” That’s a long-term promise of my dear Nanay
when Tatay died. That someday is today. Today could have been the best day of my life.
However, I’m not longing for that day anymore since this pandemic brought us to the edge
of our hope. It might be the best day before. But now, the best day will be the day when
Nanay and I could sell again together our “balut” and roasted peanuts along the streets.
Maybe, that day will surely be the best day…

Rotten Tomatoes
I’ve been cooking our breakfast since my mother left for abroad. My father
is working in the farm and he’s good with a cup of brewed coffee before the sunrise. I’m
on my 11th grade now; however, I still have two younger brothers and a little sister. I’m
planning to cook scrambled eggs a while ago. However, when I was about to get the
REFLECT
tomatoes from our mini basket, half of the dozen was already rotten. Without any
choice, I threw them outside and I was left with three fresh tomatoes and the other three
were nearly spoiled. While slicing the tomatoes, I realized that one rotten tomato can
spoil all the fresh tomatoes. Just like in life, one negative thought can spoil the day. One
lie can break someone’s trust and one bad decision can ruin your future.

4. Who do you think is the writer of this journal?

A. a matured adult C. a skilled cook
B. a responsible daughter D. a wasteful sibling

5. What does the rotten tomato symbolize?

A. bad choice C. negative influence
B. family problem D. positive outlook

6. How will you describe the denouement of the journal?

A. The character was able to realize something.
B .It ended with a half-dozen thrown rotten tomatoes.
C. The character was frustrated with the rotten tomatoes.
D .It ended with a learning that tomatoes must be kept in a clean place.

Missed Moments
It was a sad dream last night. I woke up with tears in my eyes. It was the bridge
where my siblings and cousins used to play near the bluish lake around ten years ago.
We used to fish there with our uncle, build our tents made of blankets and tell scary
stories overnight. During summer time, we used to have a picnic while watching the birds
over the horizon and waited for the jaw-dropping sunset. How can I forget that
memorable bridge? It is not only the bridge for small boats, but it is an old, antique bridge
which completed my childhood memories.

7. How will you describe the character in the journal?

A. The character felt sad about his/her dream.
B. The character seemed excited to go back to the bridge.
C. The character cannot accept the fact that he/she is older now.
D. The character is now an adult remembering his/her missed moments.

8. What is the tone of the writer?

A. disappointed C. sorrowful
B. regretful D. uncomfortable

9. What does bridge symbolize?

A. childhood memories C. sad dream
B. fun experiences D. unforgettable moments

10. How did the writer express his/her journal?

A. through remembering a dream
