Telephone System Design (Discussion)
Communication has been the peak of all interchange of information around the world.
People tend to seek interaction with their counterparts almost everyday. Telephone
communication definitely suffices the needs of human interaction via voice communication.
Telephone has been known for its capability to connect people from a certain minimal population
to a largely exclusive population. Furthermore, it is known to provide inbound and outbound
communications for people subscribed to its line of communication. However, every system has
its specific design to be able to function without any unwanted situations. Thus, Proper
Telephone System Design should be planned and implemented well enough to withstand such
circumstances. In the design of a telephone system, various specifications are considered such as
the Service Entrance, Main Terminals, Riser systems, Cables, Placements of the terminals etc. In
compliance with this, the design should be able to provide precise planning to have an exemplary
result of the Telephone System.
For the site of implementation, the area is at 332 CABALLEROS ST., SAN NICOLAS,
MANILA and the building is considered as a commercial building owned by CABALLEROS
CORPORATION.
According to the 1987 Building Telephone Facilities Standard Manual, the telephone
system must have either Aerial or Underground Service Entrance. In this case, we have chosen
the Underground service entrance to obtain some advantages such as easier ways to provide
maintenance and minimal subsequent repairs interaction to the system. The Manhole for the
Company was placed on the street. Due to the service entrance choice, a service box was
required to the system and then placed in a non-vehicular place. For Non-Vehicular Service Box,
the manual suggested the minimum dimensions in meters: 0.91 x 1.22 x 1.19. Telephone service
boxes are used to protect and organize telecommunications wiring and equipment. The 12mm
galvanized steel is used in the design to protect the service box against corrosion, which is ideal
material to use especially in underground settings. The 12mm steel is a strong and durable
material that can withstand physical impacts and other stresses that may occur in outdoor
settings. This is essential because the telephone service box should protect telecommunications
equipment inside the box. Furthermore, the lifting bar must be strong enough to support the
weight of the box and any other equipment that may be inside. The anchor bolt that is used in the
service box is 12mm x 200mm and the pulling in iron is 22mm.
Furthermore, the placement of the Main Telephone Terminal Cabinet for the commercial
building has been placed in an area that does not have any excessive noise to hinder the testing
and maintenance, away as much as possible to any liquid-related that might cause damage to the
system, rooms that exhibit extreme fumes, and limited ventilation area. However, due to
limitations of the building, a communications room is not available thus, the design considered
the latter suggestion which is the Electrical Room.
For the TTC or Telephone Terminal Cabinet, it is linked to the MTTC by a network of
wires for the Telephone services offered can be used to a specific residences or workplace. Like
MTTC, the TTC should be placed in a room far from any liquids of extreme heat. In contrast, the
TTC is a smaller unit designed to be easy to install and maintain, typically requiring less power
and cooling than the MTTC.
With regards to the telephone wiring around the office building. Several considerations
were taken into account to properly connect the employees with clients and with each other. One
of them is weighing whether the wire should run through the wall, floor or the ceiling. Running
the wires through the wall would be preferable when it comes to accessibility during repairs. It is
also less costly rather than running the wires under the floor, since that will require cutting
through the floor for the installation of conduit. One of the most important considerations for this
matter is the noise or vibration. Either the ceiling or walls can help block out noise and vibration
better than running it through the floors, and reduce the interference on the telephone wires,
especially since the building is near a busy street. Running wires through the walls can be more
flexible than running them through the ceiling or under the floor, as it allows for easier
modification and expansion of the telephone system. For example, if additional telephone jacks
are needed in a certain area, new wires can be easily run through the walls to connect them to the
main distribution frame.
Minimum size of entrance conduit was used in the design which is 50mm since it is
generally recommended for an office building and the minimum number of entrance conduit is
two (2). Provided with a 12mm non metallic conduit to a ground connection. In office or
commercial type of buildings, where floor requirements may be subjected to future
arrangements, cable size of up to 200 pairs, single cable in one riser, shall not be diminished in
its entire length. Type of cable recommended for an open or closed riser system is Alpeth or
Stalpeth. Using the 200 pairs with 24 wire gauge, the conduit size used is 50mm. Since the
entrance and house cable size was measured with a value of 200, and 50 protected binding post,
the corresponding values in BP stub type are 1.96 x 1.52 x 0.15 for MTTC, and for TTC we only
have 1 pair of protected that gives us a value of 0.76 x 1.22 x 0.15.
