GET STARTED
Virtual shopping
Think about something you bought online
recently. What motivated you to buy the
product or service? Were you influenced
by someone’s else’s opinion?

Recently, I bought a new television for my

living room. I watched some video reviews
online and eventually found one I liked.
Then I shopped around and found a site
selling it for $100 cheaper and with free
shipping. So far, I’ve been happy with my
purchase!
READING
A product review
Read the review about a face product. Do you think it is real or fake? Based on the
review, would you want to try the product? Why or why not?
CRITICAL THINKING
Identifying persuasive techniques
Read the review again. Underline
examples of each technique the writer
uses to make her review sound more
persuasive.
• a fact
• a personal opinion
• a personal example
• an opposing opinion
• a concluding statement
CRITICAL THINKING
Identifying persuasive techniques
Look at the statements from the review. Identify the
language that uses exaggerations to persuade.
1. This miracle cream can take years off your face in just three
days.
2. It erased all my lines and wrinkles.
3. If you have dark spots, they’ll be completely gone, too.
4. And the best thing about this cream is that you only need a
small amount.
5. It’s the best thing since sliced bread!
6. I firmly believe that this cream will be a success.
7. It’s not cheap, but it’s really worth it!
8. I hope you get the same amazing results that I’ve had.
