In the Philippines, weaving mats is widespread. The
most colorful ones are found in the makets of Jolo and
Zamboanga.
Weaving mats take several weeks from the
gathering of pandan leaves to stipping, boiling, and dying until
the weaving stages. The quality of a mat is judged by its
softness and fineness of the weave as well as the elegance of
the design.
Mats are also significant fixtures in Filipino homes.
They are sometimes used in rituals. In some places, mats are
used as carpets to highlight an occasion. It is also cool to sleep
on, especially inside a nipa hut, where people sleep in the
floor.
