Mathematics
Quarter 3 – Module 9:
Word Problems
Involving Circumference of a Circle
Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners,
can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions,
directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to
understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-
step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure the prior knowledge on lessons in each

SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if
you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better
understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer
the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each
activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how
they can best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part
of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and
tests. And read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the
tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.

What I Need to Know

A circle is a closed figure formed by set of points that are the same
distance from its center. The circumference is the distance around the circle.
It is sometimes called the perimeter of a circle.

In this lesson, you will learn on how to solve routine and non-routine
problems involving the circumference of a circle (M5ME-IIIi-71).

After going through this module, you are expected to solve routine and
non-routine problems involving circumference of a circle.

Enjoy and goodluck!

Lesson Solving Routine and Non-
Routine Problems
1 Involving Circumference
of a Circle

Problem solving is a mathematical process. It often requires procedures

or steps to arrive to the answer easily and systematically. Problem solving
includes examining the question to find the key ideas, choosing an
appropriate strategy, solving to find the answer and re-checking.

In this lesson, you are going to learn how to solve routine and non-
routine problems involving circumference of a circle. This lesson also
strengthens your skills in solving word problems particularly in circumference
of a circle. Follow the flow of the lesson in solving the word problems for better
understanding the lesson.

What’s New

Directions: Read and analyze the word problem. Write your answers on a
sheet of paper.

Anita is making a circular veil cloth in her project in EPP. A cloth has
a diameter of 2.5 meters. Find the circumference of a circular cloth.

4
1. What is asked in the problem?

2. What operation are you going to use?

3. How will you solve the problem?

Try answering the given problem.

What is It

Directions: Let us analyze and solve the problem using the four-step plan.

1. Understand
-What is asked? -the circumference of a circular veil cloth
-What are given? - 2.5 meters of rope

2. Plan
-Choose a strategy -Using formula in getting the circumference
C= π × d
-What is the number C= 3.14 × 2.5 meters
sentence?

3. Solve
-Perform the strategy C= π × d
= 3.14 × 2.5 meters
= 7.85 meters
Answer: The circumference of a circular veil
cloth is 7.85 meters.

5
4. Check
-Verify if the answer is -Derived the formula from C= π × d to find
correct. the diameter
C= π × d d= C/π
d= 7.85 meters
3.14
d= 2.5 meters
The diameter of circular veil cloth is 2.5
meters with a circumference of 7.85 meters.

Let us try another example:

Problem:

A goat is tied to a mango tree in the backyard. The stretched rope is

5 meters long. Up to how many meters around the tree can the goat walk?

6
Use the four-step plan to solve the problem.

1. Understand
-What is asked? -the distance around the tree the goat can
walk
- 5 meters of rope
-What are given?

2. Plan
-Choose a strategy -Using formula in getting the circumference
C= 2 × π × r
- What is the number C=2 × 3.14 × 5 meters
sentence?
3. Solve
-Perform the strategy C= 2 × π × r

= 2 × 3.14 × 5 meters
=6.23 × 5 meters
= 31.4 meters
Answer: The goat can walk up to 31.4
meters around the mango tree.
4. Check
-Verify if the answer is -Use the formula, C=π x d when diameter is
correct. given.
d= 2 × r
d= 2 × 5 meters = 10 meters
C=π × d
=3.14 × 10 meters
= 31.4 meters
