At the end of this module, you will be able to:

b) Identify science schools established to promote science education in the Philippines;
c) Discuss the concept of indigenous science; and
d) Discuss the contribution of indigenous science in the development of science and technology in the
Philippines.

IV. LESSON:
The Philippines is trying its best to improve the state of science education in the country. This module
will discuss the concept of science education and will identify some strategies to promote science education in
the country. One of the strategies is to establish science schools that will encourage students to pursue their
career in science and technology and to nurture their gifted potentials in science.
This module will also discuss the indigenous science and technology in the Philippines. Filipinos,
especially during the early times tried invent tools that will help them in everyday life. They also developed
alternative ideas in explaining various phenomena and in explaining the world around them. This system of
knowledge is called indigenous knowledge, which is the foundation of indigenous science.
The content of the lesson will be found on the sources.
V. ACTIVITY:

I. Answer the following questions


1. Are there private schools with outstanding science education programs? Identify and compare
their science education programs with public schools. Cite at least 3.
2. What is your understanding of indigenous science?
3. What are examples of indigenous science practices? Give at least 3.
4. Do you think indigenous science should be considered science? Explain.
5. How do society and culture influence the development of science and technology?

II. INTERVIEW. Interview an elder (preferably senior citizen) in your home or in the
neighbourhood of their indigenous knowledge of the following that are taught and practiced
during their time. Attach a picture of your Interview for a proof.

1. Predicting Weather Condition


2. Herbal Medicine
3. Preserving Foods
4. Planting and Harvesting
5. Indigenous Technology/ Tools
6. Building Irrigations/ Houses
7. Producing Wines and Juices
