ritual you have, or other
people might have. Explain
why they do this ritual. What
do you or they think the effect
will be of this ritual?
Include at least ONE Google
Drawing in your powerpoint.

Why as readers do we need
to be able to identify a cause
and effect?
(Good readers identify cause
and effect to understand how
different events are
connected and related. This
helps you understand the
story and character’s
actions).
View the powerpoint of a
friend and talk to them about
their ritual. Why did they or
that person do that thing?
What was the cause? What
did they believe the effect
would be?
Example: A student at the
University of Maryland rubs
the nose of Testudo before a
test. They score better than
they thought they would.
They say “I did better
because I rubbed Testudo’s
nose!”
Write this as a cause and
effect statement.
Write another cause and
effect statement that might
really explain why the
student’s scores improved.
Can you think about a ritual
that people in the past or
present do/did because they
believed it would create a
certain effect - that turned out
to not be true? What is the
actual cause of that event
that they were hoping for (or
hoping to not happen)?
