What This Module is About

When we talk about viewing comprehension, we mostly think of understanding

lessons through videos. Dictionary defines viewing as an act or occasion of seeing,
watching, or inspecting. Videos only fall in the act of watching (and listening)
meanwhile, the acts of seeing and inspecting could contain videos but without audio.
Therefore, viewing (comprehension) entails not only videos but also graphic
materials, picture presentations and art works. This module tries to provide all of
these modes of learning the lesson.

Students these days are more exposed to videos. They get excited about
television broadcast, online vlogs, power point presentation and any other media that
involves sight – pictures and graphics. This is viewing. It is essential that students
follow a certain learning program to have focus on their learning goals and achieve it.

In spite of this time of constricted learning space brought about by the pandemic, this
module designs engaging activities for learners to explore essential communication
skills through real-life scenarios and meaningful experience of sustainability and
livelihood projects. Considering the economic status of our learners in the rural areas,
this module offers two differentiated task yet aims to achieve the same project output.

• Learning with the availability of the internet (Set A)

• Learning with work text (Set B)

For learning to become more effective, Modelling is used as Teaching Strategy.

Each activity is given an example on how it is done or answered for learners to be
guided.

How to Learn from this Module

To achieve the objectives cited above, you are expected to do the following:

• Take your time reading the lessons carefully.

• Follow the directions and/or instructions in the activities and exercises

diligently.

• Answer all the given tests and exercises.

• Prepare a big notebook that serves as your portfolio/journal of your activities

• Most of all, use any mode of expression you are most comfortable with and
available at your home to answer (and) interact with the given activity
questions.
Example of Modes: a. Online Tool – blog/vlog, audio-video media
b. Written text/notebook
c. drawing/scrapbook

LEARNING COMPETENCY

EN9VC-IIa-1.4
Establish connections of events and how these lead to the ending of a material

• Making Connections
• Causality (Cause & effect)
• Transitional Devices

What’s In?
The pandemic changes how we educate ourselves these days. It is hard
to begin the life we call normal these days. If we find the connections of
everything
that is happening around us, we might be able to live a more meaningful life than we use to have.
Let us follow this video about how this COVID19 came to be. Take note of significant events
that overturned to the ending of the story. Pick at least 3-5 events that you can relate to and/or make
your own storyline of how COVID19 unfolded in your area.
SET A: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ST-cn2JQ31M
SET B: visual aid (photo essay/pictograph)

1
What’s New

Making Connections

While watching the video, a lot of thoughts come to mind. You may have felt
something, a scenario may have brought you a memory, or it may want you to do
something. It is important to have a thorough check of our understanding of the
material we see so that learning will be wholesome and meaningful. Let us follow the
reflective questions below to grasp the significant lesson we should be learning in this
topic. You may answer using text, live audio/video recording and/or photographs (or
drawings).

Video to Self
Connecting personal experience to the material viewed:
What does this remind me of in my life?
What is this similar to in my life? How is this different from my life?
Has something like this ever happened to me? How does this relate to my life?
What were my feelings when I read this?
Have I changed my thinking as a result of reading this?
What have I learned?

Video-to-Video
What does this remind me of in another video I’ve seen?
How is this video similar to other things I’ve seen?
How is this different from other videos I’ve seen?
Have I seen about something like this before?

Video-to-World:
Why is this important for the world to know?
How does this video help the real world?
What does this video encourages me to do in the real world?
What else could be happening in the world that’s not been shown in the video?

2
What Is It?

If we try to think harder of what is going on around us, especially with the

pandemic, we would end up asking questions like “This COVID19 would not have

happened if…” and “If only we obeyed the ECQ rules and guidelines…we would

be…”. These questions spring from the connections we have made from the events

we have seen on videos or on actual scenarios in our homes and our local

communities. Let’s take a look at the concept below of how these events connect.

CAUSALITY is the relationship between events such that one (or more events or actions)
is the result of the other(s). Cause is the action or circumstance that makes something else
happen. It leads to a result or consequence called the effect. Asking the question “why did
it happen,” tells the cause
and asking the question “what happened,” helps to find the effect. Signal words that help
you identify cause -effect relationships include:

when because as a result so that

for this this led to in order to result in
reason
due to consequently if… since
then

3
Look at the infograph at the following page and write at least 5 sentences
showing cause and effect by using the signal words given in the box above.
Underline the cause once and enclosed the effect in a box.

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

5
What’s More

Transitional devices are words that link one idea to another. They clarify the
. relationship between ideas in sentences. In a paragraph, they establish
internal coherence. Different transitions establish different relationships
between ideas

To Express You can use

Contrast However, on the other hand, on the contrary, in contrast, still
nevertheless, regardless, instead
Therefore, thus, consequently, for this reason, as a result,
Cause-Effect otherwise,
thus, then, accordingly

Restatement In other words, in short, in summary, that is, again

Summary In conclusion, on the whole, all in all, in summary, to recap
Example For example, for instance, specifically
The pandemic, caused by COVID19, that we are experiencing this time has
brought various effects in our lives. Base from your experiences or point of view, cite a
few of these (causes) and effects – positive and negative – to yourself, your family,
community, the nation and the world. Your answer can be in the form of an infograph,
photo-essay, or journal.

6
What I Have Learned

You must have had a lot of activity sheets and work assignments at hand beginning
from this lesson. It is important that you keep all these in one compilation not only for
your teacher to check but also a record of your personal development. Take this time to
process all what you have learned by creatively compiling your answers and activity
sheets into a journal. Please follow the table of contents. See example below:

EIAN – English InterActive Notebook ~ what you will need: big notebook, answer
sheets and activity outputs, colored pens/pencil, art tools

7
What I Can Do

We have learned the causes and effects ~ good and bad~ brought about
the pandemic we are facing these days. As we continue to learn and improve our
knowledge necessary to be a holistic person, we need to make plans and actions as well
to put our learning to use. In this section, you are tasked to do something as a response
to the cause or effect brought by the health crisis we’re facing this time. This would also
help you keep track of your progress of development. Record the outcome of your
actions in a given time (written or video recorded).

Outline your draft in your EIAN and plot the results accordingly showing the relationship of
Causality.
Online submission of video/photo is optional depending on your teacher.

SUMMARY:

We can achieve ‘connections’ when we understand what we watch, read & listen to.
It is important that one learns how to make connection so that we can find meaning. One of
the reasons why it is difficult for a learner to understand the lesson is that the purpose of
learning was not established. To make meaning or make sense of what’s happening around
us, we can follow 3 strategies to assist us in making connections: (viewing comprehension)
the relevance of the video/media towards ourselves, video (media) to other video/media,
video/media to the world.

Aristotle developed the theory of Causality ~ the relationship between events such
that one (or more events or actions) is the result of the other(s) ~ he said that a firm grasp
of what a cause is, and how many kinds of causes there are is essential to a successful
investigation of the world around us.

Transitional devices are words that assist the reader from one idea to the next. They
help the learner see the connection or relationship between ideas. These devices are
bridges that connect sentences and paragraphs. Thus, without these transitional devices,
ideas get broken and would confuse the readers.

This pandemic has brought a lot of changes in our lives. We are now living the massive
consequences of what had transpired from a single small cause. The most important lesson to
learn from this crisis is the attitude to survive. As we make connections to what has happened
around us, let’s not forget to be proactive and take this time to our advantage to grow ourselves
holistically.

9
Assessment: (Post-Test)
