This document contains examples of formal and non-formal statements, definitions, and mathematical statements. Part A provides examples of statements labeled as either formal or non-formal. Part B gives both formal and non-formal definitions for the terms "table", "graph", and "letters". Part C provides three examples of formal mathematical statements regarding Cartesian coordinates, angles, and squares.

A. Tell whether the following statements is formal or non-formal.
Write F if your answer
is formal and NF if it is non-formal on the space provided before each item. F 1. An acute triangle is a triangle that all included angles is less than 90 degrees. NF 2. The diagonal of a rhombus is perpendicular to each other. F 3. A number is an even number if and only if n must be squared. F 4. A number n is an odd number if and only if n = 2k + 1 where k is any integer. F 5. An odd number raised to a third power is always an odd number.
B. Make a formal and non-formal definition for the following terms:
1. Table Formal Definition: A table is a methodical organization of data for quick reference, typically in rows and columns. Non-Formal Definition: A table is considered to have two distinct dimensions. 2. Graph Formal Definition: A graph is a non-linear data structure composed of nodes or vertices and edges that is a collection of all points whose coordinates satisfy a given relation. Non-Formal Definition: A graph is a type of diagram. 3. Letters Formal Definition: Letters is any of the symbols of an alphabet that is often written or printed; a character that represents one or more speech sounds. Non-Formal Definition: Letters can serve as symbols. C. Make exactly three formal statements in mathematics. 1. Cartesian coordinates are a system for specifying the position of the point in space that consists of a horizontal x-axis and a vertical y-axis. 2. An angle is a geometrical figure made by connecting the ends of two rays that are commonly measured in degrees. (i Am CUTE angle kimii). 3. A square is a closed two-dimensional shape having four equal sides and four vertices. Its opposing sides are perpendicular to one other.
